Gorgeous book! Everyone should read it.
Christmas is the largest celebrated holiday around the world each year, yet very few know the real reason for the season. Even Christians (who should know better than anyone else) have been brainwashed and have forgotten that it is not about Santa or his elves or eggnog and Christmas trees. It's about the birth of Jesus and ultimately the sacrifice he made for all of us!

I'm festive.
Update - I liked that this book reminded me of Jesus during Christmas time, however I have issues with things being preachy and I hate books that are like "stop doing that. it's dumb." Really? If I could stop being worried and just trust that God is going to come and save my day, I would. I guess I'm not ready to depend souly on my savior? Who knows. I just felt like this book was trying to boost up Christianity, when what I was looking for was talking about th...more

I "borrowed" this from the lounge at work...it's very simple but I'm enjoying it...helps put a little more meaning in Christmas.
It'll be in the meeting room at work if anyone else wants to "borrow" it!

My rating would depend on who you are. If you're a Christian looking to learn something new, this book is not really written for you. It's probably about three stars. It's a wonderful reminder of things you probably have learned already, from "The Purpose-Driven Life" or maybe "Peace with God" (Billy Graham). It's a great collection of "wow" scriptures in different translations you may not have seen before, unless you're a fan of "The Message" (which...more

I read this book as a nod to Rick Warren's influence. By all accounts I've read, he's done an incredible job of growing his California-based ministry, but his upcoming gig at Obama's inauguration as caused some controversy. This is the first of Warren's books that I read.
It was a pretty quick read, which was nice. I picked it up yesterday afternoon and finished it before bed (after going out for a holiday dinner and celebration).

I would like to give this book 4 or 5 stars due to the sacred subject, but it just didn't measure up for me. I enjoyed a lot of it simply because I agree with much of what he says. But he just keeps saying it over and over. Along with the heavy dose of repetition, he seems to be pushing his Purpose Driven Life program. And I really did not like most of the different Bible translations that he uses. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to scripture and I prefer the beauty of the King James transla...more
A great book about the purpose of Christmas, namely why Jesus Christ is celebrated every year during December. Christmas has been obstructed to mean many different things instead of celebrating Jesus' birth, but this book reminds us why is Christmas so important. This would be a great gift book to non-Christians that explains the gospel effectively and simply. Christians should also read this book as a reminder of why Christmas is so important and how we can celebrate Jesus' birth more personall...more
My older brother brought me this book for Christmas because he is a very religious person and he wants me to learn the true meaning of celebrating Christmas as well as for me to become closer with God. I ended up loving this book because it taught me a lot. The book starts off by telling the readers how many people forget the main reason for celebrating Christmas. A lot of people say they celebrate Christmas because they made it through another year, they get to be with their families, or becaus...more
Great, easy, simple, yet prophetic read about the true meaning of Christmas and God's gift to all of us. This was the 1st year, in almost 39 years that I really started to understand the meaning of Christmas and Rick hits it dead on about the TRUE GOOD NEWS for ALL THE PEOPLE, it's not about religion, it's not about rules, its not about earning it, it's about GRACE & LOVE and it's amazing. Well done, thanks for all the ideas for our family celebrations and may you continue to bless our world w...more
I read this book as part of a video study. The video is added touch to this study.
The purpose of Christmas is divided into 3 parts:
Christmas is a time for celebration.
Christmas is a time for salvation.
Christmas is a time for reconciliation.
There are some great catch phrases worth remembering found in this book. An example can be the one that explains the center letter of the word SIN is the letter I, which means that I (you and me) are in the mid...more

Each year Christmas is celebrated earlier and earlier through commercialized chaos. It saddens me to see us become increasingly distant from the true reason behind our celebrations: the birth of Jesus Christ. This book helps the reader restore the focus back on Him and explores the reasons why this amazing gift was given to us in the first place.

Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose of Christmas, describes with simplicity and clarity the true message of Christmas. What does Christmas mean to you? Is it the shopping? Is it spending time with family? Is it giving to others? The true meaning and purpose of Christmas can be found in the story of Christ’s birth. Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the world.

Some of this makes perfect sense, most not too much. I believe that he is right when he talks about needing God and Jesus in our lives. I just don't believe you can get them there by reading a prayer that someone else made up and then expecting them to be here to take care of you. It is an individual thing and it should be personal. I think this book would help a lot of people who have no religion at all to think about what is missing in their lives, but might be a bit confusing as to the God...more
I needed a book to restore some of my Christmas spirit and this book definitely did that. Plus I was curious to read something by this author as his other book was such a big thing awhile back.
It was short and full of beautiful Christmas images which was great. Warren and most ministers' focus is on getting people to accept Christ as their personal savior, and this book is no exception. I am past that place in my spiritual life but it never hurts to be reminded of why Jesus came t...more

Sorry Rick, I already knew the Purpose of Christmas. (Christ is in the word Christmas, so that's a dead give away.)
Rick Warren's book, Purpose Drive Life was so good, that I was hoping for much better. Not that Rick did a bad job. This book just isn't a fit for me. This book would be a good fit for someone who has gotten to the point that they hate Christmas because it's become such a chore. If you're a person that is yearning for fulfillment from the Christmas season, has never ...more

I would suggest you get this book read, do what he recommends and change your life. Keep it handy as your spiritual journey changes you,.
I Loved the unwrapping the best christmas gift ever for yourself instead of leaving it unopened.
I know I will reread it many times and keep it for others to read.
The part on the reconciliation he writes about will be very helpful. A very quick read. Some he shared in his other books but is really worth the time it took to read it.

While there is nothing radically new in this book, it is well worth the read. It isn't very long or difficult, but it does help remind you of what Christmas is really about. While the world constantly bombards us with the commercialism of Christmas, anything that helps you to keep your focus on our Lord is worth the time. I found myself being overwhelmed by all the activity surrounding Christmas and this book helped me pause and regain my focus.
I have listened to Rick Warren's sermons (which are great) and picked up the book because of his reputation. Although the book is spiritually sound, I had difficulty with the writing style. I felt like it was a book of lists and maybe I should be taking notes. Although he writes around a framework of three purposes of Christmas, there were sublists and I felt that it was confusing at times. I also just finished reading "The Shack," which may have colored my interpretation of this b...more
The purpose of Christmas was a great book. I am going to re-read it every Christmas. The whole Serenity Prayer on page 106 was great to read. I am going to try to memorize the other 2/3. The salvation prayer on page 121 is worth multiple repeatings. I am going to definitely having a birthday party for Jesus every year now. Christ is the reason for the season.
Extremely positive little book on the miracle of Christmas. Warren, who obviously cares deeply about his readers, focuses on what the incarnation of Jesus means to them more so than what it means in general. He uses some of the same material he covered in The Purpose Driven Life. This is a great book for anyone who has a negative view of God.
This is one of THE BEST Christmas books, especially for those people who enjoy simply a superficial Christmas celebration and would like to understand how the birth of the baby Jesus has relevance to their lives. It's a short, simple read full of profound truths explained simply. Everyone should read it at least once, if not annually.
I picked up the CD version of this book, thinking it would be a good road companion. It was that. However, it tended towards converted the masses and saving souls more than information on the Christmas story.
It was still good, but would have been improved more with less of the proselytizing and more of the instructing.

The purpose of this book is to really remind us of the true meaning of the real gift of Christmas. The real gift has no cost to us except to take it. What's next is up to us, whether we want to see it for the true gift that it is and the value within it or let it just flounder until the darkness has settled. Love is the real gift.
Is it horrible to not like a religious book? I just didn't like how he explained things and didn't agree with a lot of what he said. I guess this book was just not what I was expecting. I just finished a C.S. Lewis book and he is so insightful that is made this book seem amateur.
I started reading this book because my minister was using parts of it in her sermon every week and found that it was a truly wonderful book about the real "reason for the season." This was truly an uplifting book that was a perfect read in the week before Christmas when the craziness is starting to get to you!
Easy to pick up direct connections between my life today and the creator, God. Quick to read as only 130 pages or so. Finished in two sittings. The author is the most relational writer out there today on eternal life. Highly recommended.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Talk about finding the true meaning of Christmas - this book clearly spelled it out. The authors words were simple but powerful. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone I know.
The book was well written and serves as an evangelical tool for conversion. It is not as compelling as the Purpose Driven Life, nor was it proably meant to be. I didn't think it was as focused on Christmas as I had anticipated it to be, but Warren does make the case for commitment to Christ == and I'm sure there may be people that are given this book as a gift, read it and rethink their relationship with God. I think I just expected something a little different.
This book showed me some perspectives I never thought of, such as the different scriptural text that the other studies. However, I didn't really learn anything new. I you would like a feel-good Christmas book this is a good one. But I grew bored and didn't finish it.
I found this book on our shelves while looking for something else. A simple little book, easy to read with maybe nothing earth shattering or new in it but just good reminders especially during the Christmas season.
