This book underscores the point that pretty spun sugar writings aren't enough to save a story.

Anyway, this buffy the slayer wanna be is introduced at the end of book one, when Cian's right hand gets killed. When I read that, I was like, "Hmmm, the first one to get killed from this happy band of brothers had to be a brother. Figures."

Book #2 in the Circle Trilogy and this series should be read in order because each of the six "warriors" are the main characters in a book and their characters, relationships and events leading to the final showdown develop throughout the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The dialogue had me laughing out loud many times. Both Glenna (witch from book #1) and Blair--two modern women--mixed their personalities with the past. Refreshing.

Dance of the Gods is the sequel to Morrigan's Cross, which sets up the premise that the goddess Morrigan has asked six different people to unite and stand together as a circle to fight against the growing power of Lilith and her coven of vampires. In Morrigan's Cross, the setting is that of Ireland where two of the six {conveniently three females and three males, since Nora Roberts writes het romance fiction} pair off and get all-but-legally married. Those were the male and female magicians.

In this book, the setting shifts to Geall of antiquity. There are still battles to be waged though the war is still some months off. In this book you see the development of a relationship and betrothal {c'mon, you saw this coming due to the formula. this is so not a spoiler} of the male and female warrior.

While in Morrigan's Cross I lamented that I had come to read a romance {weak} and a paranormal adventure broke out, in this book I was actually drawn in to the characters of the two warriors and in to their passionate romance. This is good, because despite a few skirmishes, very little happens by way of the paranormal adventure.

This book also sets the stage for the rather abruptly put romance between the male and female reagents. Sure, some would call Moira a scholar and Cian a ... well ... I'm not sure what, but the fact of the matter is that what these two have in common is that they are both comfortable in positions of power and authority, so long as that power and authority is tinged with office politics. Another thing they have in common is being able to go from passing acquaintances to passionately horny for one another in the blink of an eye with no provocation. That, in itself, felt rather undeveloped and while I know that the third book in this series {which I will very much read} will deal with their further relationship, it is not something I look forward to with anything that could be even poorly mistaken as eager anticipation.(less)

This book was amazing! I could barely put it down once I started it. It had much of what I expected after reading the first in the series. I had me on an emotional roller coaster, there were times when I was laughing and loving the book then two minutes later I was mad and almost threw the book at a wall. I absolutely loved this trilogy!

Then again, I really like Vampire lore.
Cian was my favorite guy, he was the most complex, wonderfully drawn character of the bunch. He and Moira made a wonderful pairing, my heartstrings tugged at the moments where they knew they deeply loved each other, but knew they couldn't have a life together with him as a vampire who will live forever and her as queen of an ancient world. You now may be asking, "Why read this book at all if you thought you would have to drag yourself through the read?".
My answer, "I decided to read Dance of the Gods because my friend, Shari, told me that the series does get better. Besides, she said Cian is her favorite Vampire. Well, if not for anything else, I need to read these books just to find out about Cian ."
Yes, my friends,my dear readers, that is the only reason why I decided to go forth with the series because I tell ya, Morrigan's Cross did not give me the desire to read forth.

"Tell us Deanna, What did you like about this book?"
My answer, "Characters, characters! If I was not convinced before, I most certainly am now! I am a character driven reader. Yes, of course, the plot is important. However, for me, if the characters are not endearing, are not calling to me, are not well developed then I do not care about the plot. For me, if I do not feel some sort of pull towards a character, if I do not see some depth in a few of the characters then the story is doomed.

Dance with the Gods delivered in character development. With Morrigan's Cross, I did not connect with the main characters and only felt a slight pull towards the others.

Dance with the Gods did a good job building up to the show down which will occur in the next book, Valley of Silence. I am so looking forward to reading Valley of Silence not only for the action but also for the characters. Mostly though, with honesty, I want to read Valley of Silence because of Cian! Yep, I want to read more of him...like I said, he is alluring.

Dance with the Gods was very satisfying!

I enjoyed this book even better than the first and I can't wait to demolish the last book in this trilogy. It's like candy!
While reading the part where our Warrior Blair is alone in the forest with her thoughts near the gypsy’s wagon, it suddenly dawned on me who the storyteller might be. I'll email you my guess if you like. ;) But please don't confirm or deny... or tell me who it is. :P

I have read this trilogy 4 times , its really a great Trilogy and with the way its written you feel like you are living the story . This set has everything you could want, brooding vampires, sexy vampire hunters , werewolves,sorcerers, dragons and romance .

This book I listened to on tape and at first I found the Irish accent hard to understand, but I got used to it. I have to admit I read the first in this series a year ago not knowing what type of book Nora Roberts writes. I just knew she was a popular writer and this was a book about vampires that sounded interesting. So I was a little shocked at some of the content found in Morrigan's Cross, not having expected it.

Two thirds through this second in the trilogy... as I'm reading two other Nora Roberts trilogies/series (one with several sisters, Blood Brothers and another it seems...) (not to mention Sisters Island which I recently finished) it took me a while to figure out which one this was and sort out who was who. Nora Roberts is one of the only "romance novelists" that I can read, and this book is a classic example of why she has transcended that genre for me. In the first place, she limits the heavy sex scenes to approximately one a book - keeping the story interruptions to a minimum. For another, she weaves a beautiful plot in and around the romantic aspects of the story so that you really do feel like you are reading a beautifully written fantasy novel that just happens to have a sex scene...more

Morgana comes to Blair and tells her that it is time to move to Gaell, to help prepare Maura's people to defend themselves and to prepare for the final battle.

Along the way, the more lighthearted Larkin and the serious Blair spend more and more time together, with Larkin flirting, and each understanding the other better.

Larkin has his moment of pain & risk when he goes into Lilith's caves to map & ...moreMonth two - The one who changes shape & the warrior - Larkin and Blair. Larkin has his moment of pain & risk when he goes into Lilith's caves to map & observe - he goes in as a mouse, and witnesses Lilith & Laura & Davey - Davey is a child turned vampire, and he is joined by Laura as they view the 'cattle' (prisoners) to find him likely candidates to chase through the caves ... quite chilling... Larkin sees the wizard working with them - and he distracts Lilith from her disappointment in his 'protections' that did not prevent Glenna and Hoyt from transporting out some of the prisoners by a special mirror he made that allows her to see her own reflection... then as Larkin is leaving, he decides to start a fire, and to open the cages to allow people to try and gain their freedom (some do)... he shifts to a dog and runs into Davy, who has killed the two he 'hunted'... but Laura shows up, realizes the dog is Larking and attacks... in the fight, Davy jumps on his back and partially bites him... he shifts to mouse and escapes, barely... once back home, where they are all worried about him, Blair remains by him to nurse him back, using her families anti vampire medicine on the partial bite on his neck - which causes him a great deal of pain...

Larkin persuades Blair to down time - walks, talks, kissing, and finally making love. At one point they have a disagreement about the handling of innocents, and Blair thinks that he is going to walk away from her - but he assures her that they can disagree, and disagree intensly, but that does not mean he doesn't respect and like her still

We learn more of Blair - of a father who was disappointed she was the child who followed in his footsteps, instead of her brother... he tolerated her, trained her, and left her at 18 to be onher own as he went out and fought by himself... and a boyfriend she had left her in horror when she told him the truth about herself after he asked her to marry him - trust doesn't come easily to her. Then Laura gets in her head, and she has located her exboyfriend, and murders him where Blair can do nothing to save him...

Then they return to Gaell - it doesn't look like Kion is going to be able to step into the circle/portal (as it is anti vampire)... but at the last moment Maura reaches out and grabs his hand, pulling him through. Larkin is warmly welcomed by his father (interim ruler) and family - Blair sees him in his role as Lord Larkin - Maura steps up to her responsibilities - to the point that after they catch to two advance vampires who killed her mother (though they were supposed to kill Maura), and when she puts them out on exhibit, and then fights one to the death (to prove her worth as a warrior and to show the full threat of previously unknown vampires so that her people will take them seriously)... and when she pridefully starts to take the 2nd vampire on, Kion steps in and kills the 2nd one, angering her to the point she follows him, yells at him, and their fight ends in one passionate kiss... and then pulling apart... hmmmm

They start to train - Maura takes on the head guard to prove herself - and they teach the women (who are reluctant at first, but take it very seriously after seeing the vampires)... and Larkin sleeps in Blair's bed - and Blair keeps reminding herself that if they survive, her time with Larkin will end, and she works to live in the moment...

and then it's Maura's turn for pain... she and Larkin go out scouting - checking on their traps, (Larkin in dragon form to transport them)... and with 2 traps left to check, they see a family stranded,their wagon broken... so Larkin flies them to safety, and Maura goes to check on the trap, and discovers that the vampires are in Gaell early, and they lost people/horse/weapons in the trap... but she was not aware of the sun's position, and she becomes trapped in the trap when night falls and the vampires awaken... she takes out 6 out of 10, then Laura shows up... Blair knows she is in big trouble - is dialoging with Laura, who is telling her about her new life she's about to begin as a vampire - and Blair takes out a water bottle (filled with holy water), takes a swig, and then throws it at Laura, burning her... Laura runs off, and as the rest of the vampires start to attack, larkin dives in, taking care of the rest of them, and then flying Blair home... and after patching her up, magic healing, sleeping (with Larkin keeping diligent watch & support), she finally wakes up with the pain under control, and Larking tells her he loves her, and is looking forward to going back to her world, fighting alongside her against vampires. ahhhhhh

One month to go... one more romance to work through... then the final battle...(less)

At times a 2nd book in a trilogy seems to exist only to bridge the more important 1st and 3rd books. Sure, it advances things from the introduction of the characters and plot to the final climax, but usually isn't as strong in its own right. Nora Roberts is such a good storyteller, though, that you can almost always to depend on to offer equally strong books in her series. I haven't read the last book in the series yet, but I feel as if these first two books are just dragging their literary feet in order to fill up 600 pages before the big battle at Samhain, or whatever. Only to have Cain kiss her to show her that prolonging the kill would have gotten her killed. In the ensuing days Blair and Larkin get close, they love each other so much that they don't know what to do. One day they went out to check the traps that they set for Lilith when they see that a family was stuck and the father was injured. So Larkin took them to safety while Blair checked on the other traps. Only to fall into a trap herself, and almost killed by Lilith's goons. Until Larkin arrives and kills the rest of the Vampires. Larkin then takes Blair home and watches over her as she recovers. When Blair recovers she asks Larkin if they could walk outside and that is when he proposes to her and she accepts. After that they started training up again if the people of Gaell are going to have a fighting chance.(less)

At first I thought this was going to be better than the first, but it's not. Everything as far as love goes is just a bit too easy for the characters. None of the drama comes from the romance. A good romance novel gets its drama from both the external circumstances and the blooming love between the characters, but Roberts does not pull that off in this book. This is part of a trilogy. It was a great book after I was able to buy-in to the magic, fantasy-ness of the book. Sometimes it is a stretch for me to get absorbed if the book is too out there. (I know if you know me you are thinking, yeah right...)
However, this book and the two that follow are great action, fantasy, adventure, with love woven through. Much more a fantasy adventure book then a romance novel.

I enjoyed this second book even more than the first in the trilogy. Again, Roberts provided good character development (this is relative, of course - good for a quick, interesting pop read, but she's no Thackeray), and the lead male character in this one, Larkin, is a lively and entertaining match for the female lead, Blair. Roberts again tosses in some amusing references to films, television, literature, and the plot keeps a steady pace through all three books to the conclusion.
