Thursday, I was lucky. Bart McDowell and Dean Conger 's classic 1977 National Geographic book Journey Across Russia: The Soviet Union Today was one of the first books I ever read on the former Soviet Union, in the adult stacks in Charlottetown's Confederation Centre Public Library . Much to my surprise, I found a copy for sale, literally on the street at Bloor and Brunswick , for a mere five dollars. This is a delightful little book, perfect digested on a subway ride. The author and his photographer friend journey around the Soviet Union. They're only allowed to go to "open" cities, so they're limited to Intourist destinations. The text is okay, but the photographs are wonderful.

The descriptions of train rides, with the passengers cold and unfriendly at the beginning- but crying as the authors depart days down the line- were the highlight of the book.

Bart McDowell was an award-winning writer and senior editor at National Geographic magazine in Washington for 32 years. During the course of his career he wrote nearly three dozen articles and several books.

Mr. McDowell worked on six continents and in 67 countries.

He was an officer in the Navy during World War II.
