It's been over two decades since Marie Koeppler married Jep Quinn. Jep's world offered the young Mennonite girl an exciting new life - until his death left her a very young widow and a single mother.
Shunned by her Old Order Mennonite family and friends, Marie makes a life for herself and her daughter in the "outside" world. In the twenty-three years since she left Sommerfeld, Kansas, she has all but forgotten her roots. But then her old Mennonite beau shows up with shocking news: A beloved aunt...more

I would give this book 3.5 stars. It was a good story about a young woman raised Old Order Mennonite who marries outside the community. After 20 years she lives as a single mother raising her daughter. When an aunt dies and leaves her estate she must go home and face the town and family that turned away from her after she left. The reader gets to watch her come back into fellowship with God. She had stopped going to church, praying, etc years earlier but eventually finds a way to put her trust a...more
i THOUGHT this was my first book by this author, but apparently, i'd read something of her's MANY "moons" ago, and had just forgotten her name. will NOT be forgetting it now!
i am enjoying this series. for one thing, i used to spend quite a bit of time up in Lancaster, in among the Amish, when i was younger. this book doesn't take place there, but ... has me remembering those days, and the good times i had there then.
this book also had me, once again, wishing for MUCH simpler times! don't think i...more

Twenty-three years ago, Marie Koeppler left her Old Order Mennonite family and faith to begin an exciting new life with Jep Quinn. But her husband's early death cut her dreams short. Widowed and alone, Marie makes just enough to survive and raise her daughter in the outside world. Then ex-beau Henry Braun suddenly shows up, bearing news: an elderly aunt has died, leaving Beth a house and small caf?e back home in Sommerfield, Kansas.

This book was okay....... I didn't love it. The writing every once in awhile would switch to first person and that would throw me as the book is not written in first person. Weird.
I think I may have not loved it because I was getting mad at how the characters were being treated and if this is how the Mennonite religion really is, I don't get it.

Trivial, self-absorbed characters.
Sounds as if the sect is overly-critical, even of members, and interpret the Bible as they see fit to benefit themselves.

Great.
A great book by a Kansas author. There is a good amount of suspense, although I managed to figure it out before the ending. Some of the characterizations of individuals were difficult to believe, but for the most part it was a very enjoyable story with a nice ending. Look forward to the second book, Beginnings!
