5 stars – Historical Romance

I wasn’t overly impressed with the first two books in the Notorious Gentlemen series, but I was most looking forward to this, scoundrel extraordinaire Lord Bramwell’s story, and it definitely delivered.

Nefarious rake Lord Bramwell Johns is the disregarded second son of the Duke of Levonzy and has never been expected to make anything of himself but a royal pain in the ass and expensive nuisance. Despite achieving heroic feats while serving in t...more

Oh my god! What a surprisingly delightful read! I didn’t see this coming. I was suggested this book rather carelessly by my friend and it just happened to be at the right place at the right time! I loved this book, and I cherished the hero, Bram! Oh where will I find my own Bram to fall so hardly in love with me? *sigh*

Always A Scoundrel tells the story of Lord Bramwell Johns, who is the second son of a duke. He is one of the most sort...more

I am so surprised how much I ended up liking it. With no spoilers let me say:

1-no TSTL heroine
2-no last page love confession
3-no predictable ending
4-no big misunderstanding
5-no easy outs
6-no over done villain

I really liked the H/h a lot, a believable love match, and the villain was bad but believable. This was a recipe I enjoy in historicals. It also read perfectly as a stand alone, so don't worry about reading the series...more

Ooh, I enjoyed this one. The hero is a rake trying to reform, after realising his exploits, intended to relieve himself of boredom, don't work any more. The heroine is trying to keep together her family, which neither wants her nor appreciates her and is perfectly willing to sell her in marriage. It was a great read and Bram is a great hero, but I've kept this one with a score of 4 for a number of reasons that bothered me.

1. We hear that the hero is a complete scoundrel, and the villain he run...more

My first Suzanne Enoch novel and I have to say she knows how to grasp a reader's attention. From the very beginning I was intrigued. The plot, the characters where all a bit familiar. After reading quiet a few romance novels I feel all of them are more or less similar. But despite that I liked this novel very simply because of the author's style of writing. It was witty and humorous. She was not deliberately trying to create a funny mood, rather I felt the edgy humor was part of the character. T...more

I liked this book, but it was kind of a disappointing end to the series.

I think Bram is my favorite character from the series. He's the most depraved and gets most of the best lines. But there is, unfortunately, a lot in his book that just didn't quite work. (The bad cover art notwithstanding, even.)

First, the Love at First Sight stuff was kind of unnecessary. We're told repeatedly that Bram has been with a lot of women, but then he meets Rose, who touches his arm once,...more

Yes - Hortencia has the right summation - "a decent read". I enjoyed the book, but not as much as "After the Kiss". More character development of Bram and Rose, and Cosgrove too for that matter, would have deepened my enjoyment of the story. The initial attraction between Bram and Rose happened too abruptly for me, and didn't really have much motivation, although once that hurdle was done, the rest of the love story developed nicely. The ending (for Cosgrove) is a bit distur...more

While I wasn't blown away by the first two in this trilogy, I loved Always a Scoundrel. Our hero, Bram, has a really dark past and some really bad 'friends.' When one of those really bad friends sets his sights on Rosamund, Bram is stumped as to why he feels the need to protect her. After all, he has been living a life of nothing but sin. But there is something about Rosamund that draws him. Bram is very different than a lot of heroes I've read in that he truly has some demons to deal with....more

I feel like I need to re-read this book before making a judgment on it, because I should have loved it. It's was the end to a good series, it featured my favorite character Bram, and one of my favorite Enoch-plots, redeemed rake. But this one just sort of fell flat at the end for me.

Lady Rosamund Davies has been running her family's lives like clockwork without any gratitude from them, but she never realized how worthless they deemed her until her father decided to trade her l...more

Bram Johns is the second, unwanted son of a powerful Duke. He has known since he was sixteen that he meant no more to his father than a pair of old boots. In retaliation, he first joined the company of an evil asshat and even more recently has become a notorious burgler, "The Black Cat" robbing all of his father's friends. One night he overhears a plan for a young innocent to be married off to his old friend and something compels him to meet this poor girl, Lady Rosamund Davies. When h...more

This novel wasn't exceptional but I quite enjoyed it because the main characters were likable. It would have been interesting to know more about Bram's dark side - I think his reformation would have been all the better highlighted as a result. I'm hoping that his character was somewhat drawn in the other books from the series but don't know, since I haven't read them yet and don't know how large a part he played in them.

I find myself wishing that Cosgrove hadn't met the fate he had -...more

There was a moment near the beginning when I was so overcome with amusement and surprise I nearly said "Bram!" aloud as if to admonish a dear friend. This was my favorite by far of the Notorious Gentlemen series. With Bram's previous minor rolls in the first two books, we see the side his friends see. He carries the label of scoundrel but he's there to help - quite selflessly despite his declarations to the contrary. So when submerged into his own life I was in fact surprised to find h...more

This was my favorite of Suzanne Enoch's "Nororious Gentlemen" series. I was really looking forward to Lord Bramwells story and it didn't disappoint. The heroine, Lady Rosamund, is overlooked by her family and forced into marriage by her wastrel younger brother (he gets himself into debt and the family is unable to repay the money he owes). Lord Bramwell is a rake and an unlikely hero based on the previous two "Notorious Gentlemen" books. Of course, this is one of the reas...more

Lord Bramwell Johns has always been a true a rake, a scoundrel and a thorn in his father The Duke of Levonzy side a darn proud of it! Bored with life, he takes up to stealing from his own peers, when one night he overhears a rich couple arranging a forced marriage for their daughter to a man way worse then him! Lady Rosamund has always been practical taking care of her family, until she’s forced to marry a man whom she dislikes but in order to save her family from debt she must go through the m...more

I have now read this book twice. Found it in a bag of books I brought back from RWA conference, and couldn't remember reading it, so I started glancing through it again. And I got hooked. Read the whole thing all over again. Hero has spent his life trying to live down to his father's worst expectations--which were pretty low. He hooked up with a real villain and did all the gambling/whoring/debauchery thing, before dad signed him up for the army and shipped him off to war. Now he's back, his bes...more

This book is amazing! The villain gives you the creeps while not overplaying it. The hero is so confused as to why he's helping the heroine. He can't admit he's a good guy. The heroine is strong, but recognizes she needs help.

I was engrossed in the story from the beginning. I believe Bramwell is the best hero in a romance at this point. He plays the hero to perfection with no conscious thought of what he is doing and is humble about it. He wants to protect an innocent.

Enoch is definitely back on the right track with this one, however it still fell slightly short of my expectations. Perhaps their love at first sight felt off, or maybe their chemistry throughout wasn't strong enough. Maybe the villain never felt threatening or believable enough. Can't quite put my finger on it. Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable read for sure.

I read this book first, but I liked Bram enough to want to get a peek at him in the previous two books in the series.

3.75 stars....so close to a 4 but it just doesnt get there.

This is a good historical romance that would appeal to any fan of that genre. However the story just seemed to lack some vital spark that made me love it more.

I liked the two MCs (main characters) but I didnt love them. I read this book out of order so maybe thats why I dont like the hero that much????

The writing and style is still top quality - salutes to Ms Enoch :O)

The books was well put together. The author can do a scene, characters remain who they are set up to be and while I thought it went on rather longer than was necessary, it ended up being a satisfying read. I listened to the audio version of this book, though, and the narrator was FABULOUS. She has it all; nuance, shading, accents; one of the best voices for this sort of book that I've ever heard. I'm hoping she does a lot more.

I enjoyed this book, but perhaps not as might as some of Enoch's others...less fun banter, more desperation, and a really evil villian (evil that makes my skin crawl is not so fun). Good characters, though, and an interesting tale of two characters with similar families who learn how to trust each other.

This is the 3rd in the Notorious Gentlemen series. I loved Bramwell Johns in book 2 Before the Scandal. I was a bit disappointed in his full character development in this book. He had no depth - was more of a stereotype.

This book started off good but quickly went downhilI fast without an interesting heroine. I could not see what in the world the hero saw in this woman. They did not make a good couple. The hero was a rake that had an appealing personality. I wanted to know more about him, but the heroine did not stand out at all. She seemed dull with nothing special to recommend her,not beauty, not spunk, not spine, not even self perservation since she was willing to marry a cruel man she hated to save her fa...more

I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series, and I was looking forward to this one because I found Bram to be the most intriguing of the 3 notorious gentlemen. And it was good....but a bit anticlimatic, I believe. He was bad for the sake of being bad because he was bored. And really, he didn't seem all that bad to me. But the chemistry between Rose and Bram was great, and the story was entertaining enough.

out of all of the notorious gentlemen books, i like bram the most. he's the only romance genre character that has made me chuckle aloud. most of the authors try to be comical but fail in my point of view. bram's voice is truly witty in my opinion.

This was the best book in the Notorious Gentleman series. Bram is such a fun character, who finally comes to see himself for what he's become. I really enjoyed this book!

It was good but not great. I guess I really expected more for this installment of the series and it didn't really live up to my expectations. I loved the first two books, but this one was just ok.

Suzanne was born in Southern California. She has wanted to write practically since she learned to read. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing books about her adventures in Africa were crushed after she viewed a National Geographic special on the world's most poisonous snakes -- of which 99% seemed to be native to Africa. After that, and in conjunction with her first viewing of the movie...more

“So you intend to spend the remainder of your life whoring, drinking, wagering, and being as outrageous as you can manage?"
Bram shook himself. He made it a point to be serious as little as possible, and neither did he want to argue with two newly married men about the meruts of being leg-shackled."Please Phin," he said aloud. "I would never think so small. You know my ultimate goal is to lower the standards of morality enough that everything I do becomes acceptable.”
