Stephen K. Ray describes in detail the religious path he has travelled from being a fundamentalist Baptist to a devout Roman Catholic. The author's strength is his extensive use of quotations from the early church fathers and his irenic tone.

A primer of Catholicism for Evangelicals, this book includes both the personal account of a evangelical couple who converted to Catholicism, but also extensive academic research regarding Catholic expression, particularly, those areas that many Evangelical Christians find troubling. The book is divided into three parts, and for me, the first part was by far the most compelling. In addition to learning about the couple's journey, this first section also contained the section "Sola Scriptura and P...more

This is the book that sealed our move to the Catholic Church. A section on baptism, one on the Eucharist, and Steve Ray's testimony of his own conversion to Catholicism all served to bring us closer to the Church.

This is an excellent book for Catholics to learn more about the faith and to introduce Evangelical's to the "pillar and foundation of truth."

It is a VERY compelling read. I'm almost done and I just started last night.

"A moving account of their conversion that caused Ray and his wife to "cross the Tiber" to Rome. Thoroughly documented with hundreds of footnotes, this contains perhaps the most complete compilation of biblical and patristic quotations and commentary available on Baptism and the Eucharist, as well as a detailed analysis of Sola Scriptura and Tradition." I really enjoyed taking my time reading this book, and re-reading the areas that impacted me the most.

I've never read a book with such lengthy footnotes in my life. Very interesting from a cradle Catholic perspective.

A very thorough research book encompassing what troubles most Protestants with Catholicism. The author obviously spent a lot of time researching the bible's claim, the church's claim and the early father's claim on infant baptism and the Eucharist. This book is not made for an easy read and is not for the casual reader. The book makes so many references to other books and texts, you'll have a "to-read" list that could take years to finish.

makes a lot of sense

A great reference for Catholic teachings on infant baptism and the Eucharist. More a compendium of quotes than anything else, but Ray does a nice job of telling his conversion story.

I love Steve Ray, but I found the book hard to read with the very LARGE footnotes. It was hard to come back to the book and figure out the gist of where I left off.
Mike
The most footnoted book I've ever read. It would take years to fully read all of the referenced footnotes.
Wendy
Re-reading while I wait for the 19th Wife at the library.
