I learned of this book from the Smart Bitches over at [http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com]. The review there was dead-on and I have thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It's a quick read with a great story line and a pair of unlikely lead characters. The gothic element is strong, but author Sandra Schwab does a great job introducing new, smart elements into a creaky old genre. The romance is steamy and believable. (The scene with the erotic playing cards is one to read again!) I've got about 20 pa...more
The HIGH point of this book was reading the descriptions of the area surrounding the castle, and being able to imagine vividly what it looked like, having traveled in that region of Germany before. (Though, of course the castle is fictional I'm sure.) This novel seems to be set about 1823(ish), though the precise year is never given, and yet at times the details seem to contradict for a later time period. Initially the heroine takes some time traveling from England to Germany, but later in the s...more
OK, here's what I remember about this one--read it a few years ago.
The prose is just lovely. I think that even if the story had stunk, I'd have given it at least three stars just because of the writing style and the fairytale references. I'd love to see more romance novels written elegantly like this. Also enjoyed the unusual setting, the Black Forest.

This book was not at all what I thought it would be. Well, I really had no idea what I was in for. I mostly picked this book out because of the cover and because it was set in early 1800s Germany. I was having a taste for the German culture. I had never heard of Sandra Schwab, so I was bound to be very critical when I opened to the first page. Also, it was marked as a 'Paranormal Romance', so this was another first for me.

A short and sweet historical romance with a slightly magical twist and fairy tale atmosphere.

I have to say I absolutely loved this book! It is a very different type of paranormal romance, not what you would expect. Fenris is a very tortured soul and believes he does not deserve to be loved because of his past and what happened to him physically so, he pushes people away by being mean and cold-hearted. Celia believes in fairytales and believes that she can break through Fenris's stone-cold heart and bring out the true man inside. This book shows you that you don't have to be perfect or "...more
This is on my keeper shelf with its hints of Beauty and the Beast. Schwab has a talent of creating suspenseful Gothic settings and strong heroines. I will read whatever she offers with the barest amounts of scepticism.
Additionally, the sister-in-law with her mangled French in the very beginning cracked me up a lot. Really great stuff.

I really loved this book. It lived up to my expectations and alternated between mystery and romance nicely. The characters are well-developed and believable and Sandra describes both them and the scenery so well that I was easily pulled into the tale.
Sandra is a great author and I look forward to reading more of her books.

the back description doesn't do the book justice. even if you don't like her first book (like i didn't), you'll love this one. Wonderfully written.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is not my usual read but I couldn't put it down. It isn't even as graphic as the books I usually read yet I had a hard time coming up for air in Florida when I was so wrapped up in the lives of Cissy and Fenris in Germany. The only prob I had was the words they didn't translate into English. Then again, I think I have seen 'The Sound of Music' enough to get the gist. Definitely recommending this book to friends.
I enjoyed this novel. It's one of the rare times it seems that romance flees from the English ton and the Scottish Highlands. I like how it seems somewhat like a fairy tale and Fenris was definitely a character that I could love along with the heroine. Tortured heroes are so attractive! I look forward to reading it again because no one ever thought to count the gargoyles!

Sandra Schwab started writing her first novel when she was seven years old. Twenty-odd years later, telling stories is still her greatest passion, even though by now she has exchanged her pink heart-dotted fountain pen for a computer keyboard (black, no hearts). She lives in a suburb of Frankfurt on the Main, Germany, with a cat, a duck, a sewing maching, and altogether too many books.
