My overall impression of this book is that it is beautifully written and evocative in many ways. The description of the water birds as seen from a canoe by a patient and world-weary John Kipling creates a backdrop of peace which promises restoration, no matter what drama should occur in the lives of the characters. Then the violation of a woman's privacy by an unscrupulous reporter plunges the reader into the middle of a high-pressure situation which seems to have no hope of an easy outcome. Lil...more

I've had this book on my reading pile for awhile and I kept setting it aside. For some reason, as the majority of my reading is at night before bedtime, I generally tend to shy away from hard cover and trade paperbacks due to the size and weight. But since it was vacation time, I decided to take this one with me and what a delightful reading surprise. This book is absolutely beautifully written - the vocabulary an artistic display and the story current beyond expectation.

The biggest surprise wa...more

If you have ever been in a situation where the press is involved (and not in a good way), you will have some understanding of what happened Lily Blake. Lily is friends with a man who has recently become a Cardinal in the Catholic church. The press takes her words and twists them so it appears that they had an affair. The press hounds Lily so much that she looses her job and eventually is forced to move back home in New Hampshire. Lily meets John, the publisher of the local newspaper, who used to...more

Another intriguing novel by Delinsky!!

"After an unscrupulous reporter falsely accuses Boston lounge singer Lily Blake of having an affair with a newly appointed Cardinal, she's hounded by the press, fired from her job, and robbed of all public freedom. The humiliation and violation of privacy leaves her no choice but to retreat to her rural hometown of Lake Henry, New Hampshire. In search of refuge, Lily forms an uneasy alliance with John Kipling, a former Boston reporter with trust issues of hi...more

This is a book I've had on my TBR pile for a few years. Looking for something different to read, I pulled it off my TBR pile and find once I started reading it I couldn't put it down for long. It was an enjoyable novel, filled with romance, intrigue, and just a delightful read. Even though it was a 514 page book, I was kind of sorry to reach the end of "Lake News." It was copyrighted 1999, and is a book that touches on the situation involving invasion of privacy and the media, and the after effe...more

Funny, I picked this book up even though I'd pretty much given up on this author, simply because it was an author I recognized in the last dregs of books when our Borders was closing (sob!). I got it super cheap and waited quite a while before actually reading it, but it ended up being my favorite of the 3 I've read by this author. I really liked the questions that were asked about how mass media works and how it effects the lives of innocent people caught up in a big story. I also thought the e...more

After reading a couple of books that revolved around murder and mayhem, I needed something light and restful. Lake News was the perfect choice. Lily Blake as been caught in a publicity nightmare which links her with a newly-appointed Cardinal. She escapes to her old hometown to heal and regroup. Trouble is that old hometown carries bad memories of its own. I loved Delinsky's vivid description of loons, their haunting calls, etc. I could almost feel the fog in my face and could hear the whisper o...more

I've actually read Lake News by Barbara Delinsky a couple of times. I first bought it the summer of 2008 to read on the long, 10 hour flight to Hawaii. I had previously read Looking for Peyton Place by Delinsky and loved it so I was looking forward to reading Lake News as well. I wasn't disappointed, and I liked the book so much that I've read it again since.

Lily Blake and John Kipling are both from Lake Henry, New Hampshire, and both left after high school to create lives for themselves away fr...more

Lake News offers us a look at what paparazzi can do when given too much attention. This is the story of Lily Blake who left NH after feeling like such an outcast that the only thing she could do was move to greener pastures. She meets Father Fran who is moving up in the church. Lily thinking she was just talking off the record didn’t realize that the evil reporter Terry Sullivan was audio taping what she was saying to twist it to make an affair out of no where. Lily Blake is shocked at the atten...more

I really enjoy the way Delinsky inhabits the emotional aspects of a story. This time around, the issues are friendship, trust, family expectations and personal expression.

When Lily Blake innocently speaks to a reporter about a newly named Cardinal with whom she has a personal friendship, her life is turned into chaos. The reporter, whose motives are revealed as the story progresses, turns her story into a torrid affair as he misrepresents her current and former associations with men in the limel...more

Some days it is comforting to read a novel that speeds along while you are reading. You may put down the book for lengths of time and still jump right back into the plot. I enjoyed this read because the main character is a strong woman. Interwoven with injustice the novel tells of the media role in slandering innocent people. Easy to read and enjoyable, lesson learned and you put this book down and know you are a good person after reading it.

Got a great sense of how the press can ruin someone's life, almost without meaning to. Lily's life spins out of control when an unscrupulous journalist accuses here of having an affair with a Cardinal. Most of the story takes place in the small town she grew up in, as she has to "hide" there.

I especially like the hero. Thought he was a good man, doing his best. In fact, there are lots of great relationship storylines in this.

This is an interesting tale of a woman living a quiet life in Boston who is accused in the news paper of having an affair with a newly named Cardinal in the Catholic Church. The story is totally false and this book tells of her journey back to normalcy and how it changes her life and adjusts her priorities. I enjoyed the book and the mix of characters and how they overcome differences to help this woman get her life back.

Good book and very little language!Sad story of the power of the press and it's disregard of people and their rights. An innocent woman becomes involved in a reporter's vindetta. She fights back with the help of a friend and the story ends happily ever after - just like I like! The story made me shiver and wonder how many such stories I've read without ever finding out the truth behind the story.

Even though I classify this book as chick-lit, it had a little bit of everything...intrigue, romance, family dynamics issues, suspense, morality. I got caught up in this story somewhere in the third chapter and then couldn't put it down. I wanted to know how it all came out, what was up with Lilly's mother and most of all, what Rose's problem was. Unfortuntely that Rose thing is still up in the air, but it was a good read nonetheless.

This is a book dedicated to those of us who seek justice for ourselves after unthinkable betrayal or being chosen as a pawn to be sacrificed in someone else's battle. It is written well, without any pretense, and the author is able to express the feelings and the hurt of the characters in a believable interesting story.
Dare I suggest it is good reading for females?

Isn't in intriguing how lies are formed and take on a life of their own? I am certin that the one creating the falsehood never gives thought to the trickle down effect of their words- the wave of hurt they are creating. In this book, Lilly (one of the main characters) is falsely accused of having an affair with a Cardinal. The person fabricating the sory (lie) only thought of their own personal pain and drama. Because of one action so much saddness is created for so many that the wrongdoer does...more

This story of a young music teacher that is targeted by the popular press and has her life fall apart as a result is a good reminder to enjoy each day as it comes and that perhaps the press has too much freedom and power? However, through her experience she learns that things happen for a reason and that perhaps change can be really good...... An enjoyable read.

I wasnt sure if I would like this book as it started out with a huge injustice done to the main character. As my anger grew, so did my appreciation of the story line. Lily Blake has been accused of having an affair with the recently named Cardinal but none of it is true. No matter, the papers are having a field day at the expense of an innocent life. She retreats to her hometown of Lake News, NH where she finds not only the courage to reverse her ill fortune, but in the process finds reconcillia...more

This book starts out very slowly. The characters are well drawn, but I found myself anxious for the real story to get going. I kept reading because of other things I had read by the author and thoroughly enjoyed. The description of small town life was so true to life with all its good and bad parts.

This well-written adult novel was a very good read. It was part of four great novels included in Reader's Digest Select Editions, Volume 6, 1999. The plot draws the reader in. The small-town New England setting was engaging. If you are fond of the Jesse Stone movies, this book has the same home-town feel.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Set in "Lake Henry, NH" (Yay New-Hampy!)and with very likeable characters, this one was a sure bet with me. The loon passages got a bit slow--perhaps the author visited the Moultonboro Loon Center a few times too many?...but there's plenty to chew on here. The tension in the plot kept this one from becoming too quaint.

Note: There are some seriously pathetic moments where the reader attempts a NH accent. All actors and actresses should just abandon the at...more

I really love Barbara Delinsky's writing. Her characters are complex. They inhabit fully realized words. Their issues are not quickly resolved. I feel the relationships in this book and any love found come honestly. I can almost hear the loons.

Unscrupulous reporting falsely accuses singer of having an affair with a Cardinal which ultimately destroys the life she'd build in Boston. Forcing her to the town she grew up in, she slowly re-builds and find new security and trust.

Barbara Delinsky is one of my favorite authors to read when I just want to read a nice, easy story about a woman, (usually in love), her experiences and her emotions. I enjoyed this but it wasn't my favorite of hers.
Rinda
Interesting story of what happens when an overzealous reporter cooks up a scandal to promote his career. Their is another motive, however. Shows what happens to a person who's character has been comprimised.
Nancy Besecker
Not the best book of Barbara Delinsky...the ending, in my opinion, was too perfect. She does, however, describe the characters' relationships beautifully!! She's still one of my favorite authors.
Patsy Chilson
Great book and for anyone who has been harrassed or treated un fairly by media it really shows you what they can do.. especially to the innocent around the big wigs...
Great read loved it!

I read this year's ago while visiting Michigan and visting the lakes and the cherry country. This book was a very fun read and I would suggest it to anyone who likes a light romantic suspense read.
Jennifer
Predictable, but pretty good. I could have lived without some of the details when the main characters "get together" but overall, it was a pretty good beach read.

I was born and raised in suburban Boston. My mother’s death, when I was eight, was the defining event of a childhood that was otherwise ordinary. I took piano lessons and flute lessons. I took ballroom dancing lessons. I went to summer camp through my fifteenth year (in Maine, which explains the setting of so many of my stories), then spent my sixteenth summer learning to type and to drive (two sk...more
