Read in October, 2007
There is perhaps more rhetoric than facts, but the ideas are a refreshing alternative to the prevailing (Singaporean) wisdom. Worth reading, just to have our assumptions questioned, and think more deeply about the accepted wisdom. Not recommended for substantiating arguments though.

If you have to choose, I'd read the CLosing of the American Mind before this. Interesting note: he takes the title from Gasset's 1930's Revolt of the Masses, which is also worth reading.
