I wish I understood French well enough to read Gautier in the original, for this dated but rich translation must surely be based on a sumptuous original. His writing exudes that mid 19th-century refinement summed up in the phrase belles lettres. Most of his work that I've read centered on exotic cultures, especially Egypt. This was the time of the French conquest of Egypt, and here Gautier rhapsodizes about about a romanticized ancient Egypt. It's memorable not so much for what he says, but how ...more

Cleaning out bookshelves, I grant memorial stars....

Flawed, but fascinating....

European historical fiction (if I might generalize) was a 19th century product created by Sir Walter Scott, Balzac and their like, exploring their own nation's pasts.

Gautier (on the heels of Bonaparte and early Egyptology) creates one of earliest European historical novels to explore (and romanticize) the deeper (African!) past. Amazing that it was published roughly a year after Madame Bovary (and probably helped pro

I read this historical romance in an English translation (1901 Sumichrast) and so presumably missed out on quite a few verbal felicities; but on the whole I suspect I got the gist of the work, and am sorry to say I found it a disappointment.

It starts very well, with a vivid prologue which evokes the wonder and mystery of tomb exploration at the dawn on Egyptology, but once the main narrative gets underway we find ourselves faced with a rather trite, uncomplicated romantic quadrangle involving an

The potential that a work of historical fiction that tells the story of an ancient Egyptian love triangle is far greater than what this book delivers. The last 60 pages pick up and move at a breakneck pace when compared to the first 190, during which a mummy is discovered and the reader is then transported back in time to tell her story. Once back in ancient Egypt, the author proceeds - over roughly 100 pages - to describe pretty much everything that the main character walks by with excruciating ...more

Why is it when anyone writes fiction set in Ancient Egypt, there is so much mummery and, above all so much STUFF? All those flowers and gems and weird cosmetics and ... just ... lots ... of ... STUFF. Perhaps the lovely Tahoser (the heroine) would feel much better if she just ripped into a cheeseburger or scratched herself a little. When a gal needs a lift, sardonyx, bitumen, spikenard, and myrrh just won't do the trick.

The same phenomenon appears in Flaubert's Salammbo , but there the author h

I read the short version, so I'm not sure if it was the version or the story really didn't gave me anything. The love of the protagonist had my attention, but I would like to see something more. Maybe, if or when I read the full version, I would like it.

It's always interesting to read a book about Egypt written in the 19th century and learn how much or how little people care for true/detailed archaeological investigation. Nevertheless, the story of Tahoser and her many adventures in search of love interesting to follow.
A great book to read if you happen to be passionate about Egypt.

Wonderful story, I love a lot the literature of this times ( like Victor Hugo and Theophile Gautier). When he describes the places, like Tahosers house, I started getting bored, but in general it was cool.

Excellent! ...if you're looking for a non-addictive soporific. Or, of course, if you're studying it for the XIXth century context.
