Based on his blog (of the same title and that caused great controversy a few years back when the Army got all pissed off about it) this book is a first hand account of life as a foot solider in Iraq. Buzzell captures the sentiments of someone in transition--he joined the army not out of patriotism but as a means to escape his going nowhere life back in the States. As his story progresses he begins to question the sanity of the Army and the legality of the Iraq war. What's being reported on the m...more

My War is an autobiographical collection of blog entries, anecdotes and musings about life in the US army in Iraq. The writing is not amazing, but the guy's got a really solid voice and his story-telling is very honest and funny.

Colby Buzzell is a California slacker turned soldier turned professional writier. His hold on literary technique is astounding. He is a natural writer.
This book is the story of a slacker's search for change and excitement, his experience as a soldier in Iraq, and his thoughts on the operation of the Army and the war in Iraq. The images of war he creates in the reader's mind are like those written in great war novels - but then you realize that this stuff really happened and still happens ev...more

had started it and noticed that at first the chapters were short and very easy to read. The author's enthusiasm and awe at the newness of things was contagious. As the book went on, much like the war itself, the chapters go longer and the writing was more complicated. At least one other reader talked about skimming parts of the book. I bet that a lot of us in the United States (at least) have been skimming the war coverage. Overall, I was glad to read this book. It provided an insightful, ...more

Buzzel maintained a blog from his base ("FOB Marez get mortared a lot.") in Iraq, not the first one but probably the best one it gained popularity till Buzzel chain of command noticed and proceded to censure his work. He could have kept on writing but decided not to.
The book is roughly half part the blog materials and half part added stories ... sadly the added parts are not on par with the blog. Still put a brilliant minded individual in a situation like a war and the results are ...more

The author was an infantry soldier stationed in Iraq. He posted a blog about his daily life, then turned it into a book after he got home.
Book is great because it gives us his version of events side-by-side with a completely inaccurate news article covering the same events.
Also, it has an extra added twist of government censorship when his superiors find out that he's writing a blog. Definitely check this out.

Loved it. I don't know if there is another Iraq War soldier's narrative that is more comprehensive or honest. I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh out loud many times over, and gave me probably the closest sense of what it must be like to be an infantryman in Iraq. He is also known for his blog of the same name, which people may have heard of through numerous newspaper articles and a feature on NPR.

This book rules for a lot of different reasons, and the thought of it puts me on the brink of jaunting out to the recruiter's office to make something more violent out of my otherwise jaunty life.

What a great job Buzzell does in sharing his experiences in the Army. I hope that he continues to write-I read this book in a day. As a teacher of students who sometimes have no idea of what to do with their lives, I cheered for him throughout the book. I hope he discovered his "calling" in Iraq and that he will write more.

Another view of the Iraq War. This one is much different than the Deserter's Tale. In that book, atrocities by US soldiers against Iraqis are common, stomach turning, and widespread. In Buzzell's book, hardly any Iraqi is mistreated by US soldiers.
Either Key is lying, or Buzzell is omitting. You decide...

Last year after hearing a whole thing on NPR about Iraqi war blogs from American soldiers and Iraqis, I went out and put Colby Buzzell's fucking awesome book on my library list. He wrote some fucking excellent candid accounts of what it's fucking like to be a fucking soldier in fucking Iraq. Dude.

I'm all about oral histories, hearing people tell their sides of a story, no mediators, and that's mr. Buzzell for you. Un mediated Iraq correspondence, agree with his position or not, he lived it, and conveys it well in text.
If you like Studs Terkel's WWII book, you'll probably like this one.

This book changed the way I think about the war in Iraq. I listen more to the reports and think of the soldiers as individuals who are there for so many different reasons. The book is based on the blog he wrote while there. It was funny- "WTF?" "My Bad" (after almost shooting someone).

Grunt's eye view of the Iraq war. The author's clean writing style and dark sense of humor make for an enjoyable read. When asked to write a letter to his family in the event he is killed, Buzzell writes, "Mom and Dad: You were right. I should've gone to college."

This book is so good! It shows how boring yet scary it can be in Iraq. I probably shouldn't have read this at the time I did knowing that Kyle is there but in a way it kind of helped! I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has any interest in the war!

Like "The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell" and "Just Another Soldier", Colby adds to one of my favorite genre, the "soldier blogger".
Recommend. I especially like Colby introduces himself to the reader and how he came to join the military.

Good account of one soldiers experiences in Iraq. I actually attended AOB with the Lt. that gets hits by an RPG in this book. I felt kind of bad reading that part since the I, along with some of the other 2LTs, used to pick on the guy.

A great book on the war in Iraq from not only a soldiers view point, but from just a bored kid in California when a war breaks out. Its as apolitical as can be while being on the ground and hearing the attitudes of those who are there.

There are alot of interesting aspects of this book...it's a first hand account of an enlisted infantryman in Operation Iraqi Freedom, initially written in real time as a blog, and later transformed into a book, making this a blook.

Interesting tale of a war zone from a soldier who was there on the front lines. Good diary like approach to the writing gives a much better idea what Iraq is like than the major media.
