Beyond the Garden Gate: The Life of Celia Laighton Thaxter
Celia Laighton Thaxter was an author, painter, gardener, and one of the most popular New England poets of the late nineteenth century. Her nonfiction works, An Island Garden and Among the Isles of Shoals, continue to engage readers; "her prose," Smithsonian Magazine has said, "has a timeless quality that makes delightful reading today."

I was interested in an updated biography of Thaxter, since no one has published one since Rosamund Thaxter's _Sandpiper_. This one gave me much-needed facts and background, but it's style was sometimes stilted. I can also do without some of the psychological hypotheses, but that's just a personal choice. For readers wanting an updated biography of Thaxter, this will certainly fit the bill.
A fascinating woman! I can't wait to read more of her poetry.
