Reeman missed a beat here with this tale. His antagonist is so far out of line it just doesn't gel. And the main character's backstory is presented with hardly a flashback at all; it seems far better to have started with the captain's first command being sunk in the Arctic rather than to simply refer to it. And there is a curious jarring discordant note with a barely developed subplot that ends abruptly with a severed head in the heat of battle that just doesn't sit right.

One of his poorer effor
Powerfully written. Douglas reeman brings u right into e midst of e ppl crewing the battlecruiser. He write of characters that u feel for and can understand and most likely would've came across if u are in e uniformed services. One of his best books.

Douglas Edward Reeman (born 15 October 1924, Thames Ditton) is a British author who has written many historical fiction books on the Royal Navy, mainly set during either World War II or the Napoleonic Wars.
