Justine or Good Conduct Well Chastised
If de Sade had submitted the original version of Justine to us (from prison) in 1791 we would have rejected it, because it is pure sadism, as is to be expected from the original 'sadist', even though it is wrapped up in philosophy. However, it is now freely available in English as a classic, and has been so for quite a while. This version is simplified rather than toned do...more

Great book, but i really don't care for translations.
Let's see, something I took from this book:
Believe in God and a bunch of people are going to rape you, take advantage of you, tie you to a tree and let the dogs get you, while your sister becomes a whore and marries a rich guy and gets all the wonders in the world, while everyone who's fucked you over got rich and became successful.
But, hey, at least you go to heaven in the end...

I'm about 75 pages in to this 400 page book, and my one complaint so far is that it seriously isn't trashy enough. I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it. Between every scene of "delicious obscenity" there are pages and pages of Marquis de Sade philosophizing over the meaning of life. I'm sure in the 18th/19th centuries his worldview was shocking and blasphemous, but seriously for today's readers they should publish this book in a Red Letter Edition, just like The Bible, where all of t...more
When I was a grad student in Comparative Literature, all the "cool kids" read the Marquis de Sade. Just add philosophical musings to the sexcapades and basically you have porn for intellectuals!
Once again, I'm just guessing at the publication date based on the style of the bk's 'tasteful' 'artistic' (ie: camouflaged) cover. For de Sade, this is borderline PG. IE: In contrast to his more full-blown SADISTIC work - some of wch I've never been able to bring myself to read.
De Sade's last paragraph begins:
Reader, this is a stark and tragic tale; but we hope that you have shed tears over the misfortunes of virtue [..]

Set in the 18th Century, this book was very controversial for its time and now I understand why.
But, nowadays, I think that it is difficult to shock anyone due to the information we can get.
So, my opinion of this book is that it is not a great story, but rather a philosophical quest to find what is good and evil and, what kind of gains can be obtained by choosing one of them. While Justine is good in her heart she is treated under all the evils in the world, she suffers alot but she ...more

I thought I should read some de Sade just to say I had, and I think Justine was a fine place to get a feel for this author's style and subject matter.
I'd wondered if, by today's standards, de Sade's sadistic sex scenes would seem tame, and was suprised to find that wasn't the case. While the language clearly dated the narrative, the sexual situations could have been dreamed up by a porn author writing today.
And interspersed with the sex scenes was a discussion about lif...more

It took me a while to get into the rhythm of this novel, but once I did I understood it's extravagantly told lessons with ease. Though parts made me queasy, I'm glad I took the time to read this. Being the first novel of Sade that I've read, I didn't know what to expect. I assumed raunchy orgy filled scenes of stomach churning matter, but was surprised. While there isn't lack of, there was more to be gained. Justine's attempts at reason towards her captors and their rebuttals and explanations we...more
Well, I'm on the part where the Count's nephew goes on and on about how there is no God. I've never read anything as insulted to Christianity as this one. And before that is the part where the bandit leader justifies his killing of 3 travelers for a few pounds. Yet, he preaches the virtue of physical pleasures (the only real thing), and only what matters to YOU is what matters (thereby you could and should kill a person even if it's for only a cent). It smells so like Any Rand's "Virtue of ...more

Two young sisters are separated and one is given the choice of living a life of sin and luxury, the other chooses to obey God and remain chaste. Everything bad that can happen happens to Justine, the pious sister and everything good that can happen happens to the sister who forsook God and embraced premarital sex, murder and sin. My boyfriend's father found a paperback copy of this book in the trash and I read it in about three days. It had some semblance of a plot, just enough to move Justine a...more

This is primarily a book of philosophy...which is not to say that it isn't also filled with fairly graphic (in an 18th century kind of way) scenes of every kind of sex act imanginable. The philosophy is that of the merits of vice vs. virtue. The protagonist (a virtuous woman) falls prey to a series of libertines who use and abuse her in whatever ways they deem pleasurable to themselves. Some of these tribulations are inflicted as the result of chance events while others result from Justine/Th...more
Fascinating for its portrayal of libertinism and for its occasional bouts of philosophy. It is, however, extremely unrealistic and repetitive in a way that reminds me of stereotypical porn movies ("oh no, how did I happen to meet that big bad group of men who want to have sex with me, right after that other group of men who had sex with me?!"). There is also a good amount of camp, as the narrator describes, lingering lovingly upon each juicy detail, each of her unfortunate encounters...more
Annoying and boring. I want Justine to shut the heck up. It's a back and forth between a weakly portrayed Christian and terrible tyrants who treat her like dogcrap. I stopped reading about 7 chapters in, it's simply tedious and not an accurate description of good or evil, I don't think. People are not all one way or the other.
This is, so far, my favourite book by the famous Marquis de Sade. He was quite a mad man! While some people may find this book disgusting and offensive, I love the story. Sade tries to teach the reader how to live happily: by doing all the wrong you can, by not caring for others, by doing all kinds of terrible things. I find his philosophy quite fascinating and I won't try to classify it as right or wrong; it's just a way of living and thinking. I think this book offers a really interesting and ...more
Okay this book was a bit messed up, as you might expect.
I liked the scene where a man comes up behind a woman at a public hanging, during the French Revolution, and stands close to her. Then as the hanging progresses, they both get more and more excited by it, start rubbing against each other, and end up having not-so discreet under the skirt sex which climaxes with the hanging.
What's not hot about that?
Hahaha!

Libertijnse gedachtegoed...

This is a strange tale of really cruel people doing nasty things. I liked it because it is controversial and it was once banned (I have a thing for banned books.)
I have no idea why Sade is known for kink. It's kinky, but only in terms of content. If you think the Sexy Gods of Flagellation blessed him, you're wrong. The description of the sex is almost clinical, and the censorship in the book doesn't let you in on the juicy scenes at all. O I suppose it has a performative function in "showing" you that the reader wants to be a voyeur too, to be titilated -- doing kinda what Baudelaire does in Les Fleurs du Mal. It probably ties in at a textual l...more
