I enjoy watching the TV show based on these books on Nick Jr with Natalie, so I expected to like this book more. I'd give it a 2 1/2 if I could. I liked the illustrations and the ending / theme. I really liked how this was about a child looking for a mother, but in the end, it really was about being abandoned and adopted. That could be quite powerful for the right child. But, we only see that all come together on the last page. (This idea did make the TV series make more sense. I always wondered...more
I had to sample this series when I realized that 1) it is published by the same folks who do Madonna's books (eek!) and 2) this is apparently an extremely popular series. I thought it was okay, though I can certainly see it's appeal. Very bright illustrations, really fun and animated-feeling and, rhyming text and, well, it is about BUGS! Some children may be bothered by the fact that Little Miss Spider's mother is never found (did she die?!? not want her babies?!?) but the message is meant to be...more
Short story with a good rhythm, it's been a favorite for both my girls.
I like that it shows that you don't have to be the same bugs to be in the same family.
I do wonder about how what impression it may give about birth mothers as in the beginning of the story the little spider has been abandoned. Not a huge deal, but could show a slightly negative undertone.

This is the story of Little Miss Spider and the day that she was born. She goes searching for her mother and can't seem to find her. She learns a wonderful lesson at the end of the book, "For finding your mother, There's one certain test. You must look for the creature, Who loves you the best!" I love this message!

VERY cute...loved it. Kendall picked it out and lots of other Miss Spider books but I wanted to try one first.
we will get another one. They loved it.
Good illustrations, great set up of the words and sentences for early learning to read.

Cute book, but I'm not a huge fan of the bright, shiny Lisa Frank-esque illustrations. That's just me though. The pictures are cheerful, and the story is sweet, and a lot of kids will probably really enjoy this one.
The kids really enjoyed this one esp. since many of them watch _Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids_ on Nick Jr.

Little Miss Spider hatches and can't find her mother. The library copy I got was falling apart.
The 1 star is more that it isn't a very good for adoption purposes but using a different lens it might be fine.
So the last line of the book is nice: "For finding your mother, There's one certain test. You must look for the creature Who loves you the best." But I think the book itself creates more questions than answers and is unnecessarily anxiety provoking.

I haven't read this one yet but it is by an established, popular author so I hope its good because I would like to use it.

An enjoyable story with incredibly cute illustrations. It didn't take too many readings before we started getting hugs every time we got to the last page. Although this was advertised as an 'adoption story,' it's a wonderful read for anyone. It was most helpful as our toddler is going through her 'monster' phase and we could show how parents are here to protect you.

The other day Roland opened this one to read it to the kids while I was making dinner. He was having a hard time reading it "right" (according to Emilie) and so I took over, from the kitchen, and surprised myself by remembering every single word! I guess it's a favorite around here. It really is a charming little book and quick to read! :)

This book is useful for teaching children science, since it discusses nature and insects. This book also can be used as an introduction to discussing adoption within the classroom. Cute pictures and should keep the interests of the children!

David Kirk is the creator of children's books that follow the character Miss Spider. Before writing books, he made colorful toys that were sold in hand-painted boxes. He was urged to write children's books when his toys caught the interest of a book packager. It wasn't difficult to figure out what he would use as characters in his stories: his daughter, Violet, had a liking for bugs.
