Boy, is this a lot of fun. For one thing, Trillin's critical and sardonic poetry is bi-partisan. That is, he tweaks both Rs and Ds who were running (or thinking of running) for President. I'm tired of dumb political posturing from a partisan perspective--whether Ann Coulter or Al Franken.
So, this book is a welcome change of pace. It takes poetic shots at a variety of candidates in serviceable verse.
My conclusion? Take a break from partisan politics and have a few chuckle...more

Pretty rare for me that I can place a book on both the poetry and the politics shelf, but I am glad I was able to do it with this one. Often when I am at the library and looking for a new book to read, I kinda glance over the poetry section in the new arrivals. I had seen Trillin reading this novel previously on The Daily Show, and being familiar with his work, I decided to pick it up. Hilarious recount of the 2008 election told in poetry form. Some worked better than others, but overall a r...more
Calvin Trillin's Deadline Poet is one of The Nation's best regular features - here he zings all the candidates and incumbents, some more than others (of course, some were wearing much more prominent "kick me" signs.)
The meter of the poetry is a bit rough, but that doesn't make it any less funny or biting. Three cheers for the First Amendment!

I never knew Trillin was so poker-faced until I saw him reading from this book on The Daily Show. I have to say that the poems were even funnier when I read them on my own. It's a pithy volume, and easy read, but very clever.

If I had to relive the 2008 presidential election, all two-to-three years of it, a short book of funny epic poetry that can be consumed in one sitting was probably the best way to do it.
A funny recap of this past election in verse, that I'm sure we are all glad that it is finally over with and soon we will have someone new taking over.
this was great! It brought back all of the election the good, bad and ugly and in delightful rhyme. Any political junky will love this.
Warning -- don't read this around anyone who finds it irritating if you keep laughing out loud, and reading bits of doggerel to them.
This book was amusing, and a great (though liberally biased of course) summary of what happened leading up to the 2008 election.
Some deft turns of phrase.

Humorous. It was interesting reliving the 2008 campaign with these witty rhymes. I am curious to read his other stuff.
This is a GREAT look back at the 2008 Presidantial race! Its an entertaining and easy read! Trillin is insightful and enjoyable!
Some good stuff. Especially liked one that involved comparing Romney and a Ken doll and making a rhyme with genitalia.
wonderful!
Ditto to my earlier Trillin review
To be read aloud, of course.
