『竜馬がゆく』『燃えよ剣』の2作の長編小説が立て続けに発表された1962年(昭和37年)は、司馬遼太郎の目が「幕末」という動乱に向いていた年である。同年5月に連載が始まった本書は、その先駆けとなった作品だ。斎藤一、加納惣三郎、井上源三郎、沖田総司などの新選組隊士たちの生き様15編を、抑制の効いた筆致で描ききった連作短編集である。そこには、司馬が追い求めた「漢(おとこ)」の姿が息づいている。
