Ruth Park died recently (14 Dec 2010) and I plan to read some of the books I've neglected. I love her writing for children and adults - Playing Beattie Bow, Swords and Crowns and Rings, and Harp in the South are my favourites. This is a collection of children's stories in which something odd happens. They are somewhere between Paul Jennings and Roald Dahl if that makes any sense. Their strength is that the settings and characters are richly realised - there is a lot of extraneous detail here ...more

Ruth Park was a New Zealand-born author, who spent most of her life in Australia. She was born in Auckland, and her family later moved to Te Kuiti further south in the North Island of New Zealand, where they lived in isolated areas.
