With a debt of gratitude and writing credit to Michael K. Brett-Surman's dinosaurs, from which I stole the format and a good many of the words from page 150.

This was my first Harlan Coben book and I thought it was just fabulous! I'm not huge into "mysteries" or "thrillers", but when I do sit down with one this is the type of story that has everything I want in a "page turner" - short chapters, quick dialog, twists and turns, and narration that was surprisingly funny at times (case in point, after annoying a police officer and a prosecutor both in a matter of hours the main character concludes, "I had itched an ass ...more

After his return to Myron Bolitar with PROMISE ME, Coben went back to standalone thrillers with this one. It was good, although I had some doubts about the characterization. I couldn't quite believe everything I read, even though the facts were consistent. I suspect that Coben knew that if he had done more to make the characterization of certain characters consistent and clearer, then it would have telegraphed the ending. But at this pace, who really cares about characterization. It's only ...more

Another great book by Mr. Coben. This one takes place at an old summer camp where 2 teens were murdered and 2 more disappeared. Twenty years later, Cope solves the mystery with the help of his former love, Lucy.

My favorite quote:
"She tried to figure out her own life philosophy and came up with something she once heard a rock star - Eric Clapton, she thought- say in an interview about not being a big fan of, uh, people. She wasn't either. She preferred - as ridiculous a...more

The Woods, by Harlan Coben, B-plus, narrated by Scott Brick, produced by Brilliance Audio, downloaded from audible.com.

This book will definitely make my top ten for the year. This is one of Coben’s stand-alones, and I prefer it to his series.

I liked this book because it was a "couldn't put down" kind of book. I wanted to keep reading it to find out what's going on now.

I started this one on my lunch break yesterday. So good. There's a lot of dialogue, which makes the 400 pages fly by, and a mystery that's extremely, well, mysterious. It's written in first person, which usually I don't like, and was still just the tiniest bit annoying here, but it didn't get too much in my way. The main character is a county prosecuter who is prosecuting two rich white boys for raping a black girl. The boys' fathers sic private detectives on him to dig up dirt on him, whic...more

Harlan Coben does it again...gets you so wrapped up in the suspense & the story that you just can't put the book down. The main character Paul is a prosecutor who has a past that he'd prefer to forget...being at summer camp 20 years ago when 4 campers disappeared (one being his sister) and 2 were found dead, the other 2 never found. In the present day framework of a trial that seems to be taken straight from the headlines of the Duke lacrosse players case, the past slaps the prosecutor in the ...more

A friend gave me this book as a parting gift. It was intended as a 'in-flight' book but didn't quite make it as having started it, I couldn't rest until I had finished it. What attracted me most to this book was the characters - wholly believable and human with flesh as well as bones. Paul Copeland's dilemma of ethics (tell a lie to save a friend/leave the past buried or dig it up etc) was thought provoking and caused true thrill, mostly because these are questions we all face (though perhaps in...more

picked this up at an airport book store. was happy i did. though i was able to see most of the "twists and turns" coming, the book was still very entertaining -- making the lack of leg room and snow delays quite bearable. a good page turner.

I'm a huge Harlan Coben fan this was the thirteenth of his novels I have read and quite simply why go looking for something else to read until you have completed his impressive back catalogue.
WHy why why Hollywood has not been beating down Coben's door I honestly have no idea but I think like Grisham it will only take someone to have a hit movie with any one of his books and the rest will fast follow.

For me this is right up there among the best of his novels.

I just finished reading or listening to this book, I got it on audio book for my commute to work.. and the book was good, but the reading... left some to be desired, there were places where it seemed like they skipped pages or thoughts....kinda gave me the impression that towards the end the author just wanted to get over with the story... not sure what was going on as it is not abridged... I've read many of his books, and this one was ok, though i say that with reservation because maybe its the...more

This is a partially-read book review as I've only just started reading. I've only read one Coben novel prior to this one ("Just One Look") and already I can see that this one is like that one. Not so much in the plot (although there are some similarities in the plot-device), but in the ... style, I guess. The writing isn't the best, some of his character names are over the top in a "roll your eyes" kind of way, but you (or at least I) just seem to get sucked right into the...more

I'd give this one 4,5 stars. Harlan Coben is definitely one of my favorite mystery writers. This is an amazing read that draws you in because of the very deeply human characters and the great dialogue. I felt such a trepidation reading the last 50 pages of this book; I just didn't want to get to the end and find out how this story was going to unfold!
Wouldn't mind at all to read more about County Prosecutor Paul Copeland and/or his Chief Investigator Loren Muse.
Great characters!!

I have read a few of Mr. Coben's books and have enjoyed them. This book had more potential than it lived up to. The author has a lot of ideas in this book and not all of them really worked. The protagonist in this story, Paul, is a single dad, widower, and a county prosecutor with Congressional aspirations. His Father recently died, his Mother abandoned the family 20 years ago after his sister was possibly murdered at a summer camp. Lets face the guy never had a chance. However, I found hi...more

A solid mystery novel.

Paul is a county prosecutor in New Jersey. As a teen, his life was turned upside down when his sister disappeared with 3 other teens into the woods at a camp where he was a counselor. Two of the teens were found murdered, and the two others (including his sister) were assumed dead.

Twenty years later, a man is found murdered. His pockets contain articles and information about Paul, and Paul is quickly brought in to view the body. The shocker - the m...more

I'm so torn about this book. It could have been really solid. It's got a tense plot and an excellent sub-plot with a courtroom drama element, which I adore. There are some nice twists and the last line is actually quite terrific. However, it's full of trite dialogue and descriptions (and how many different ways can Coben have his narrator, Paul, describe the feeling of his heart being broken/torn/lurched about? Let's try One Million Times).

Coben also goes way, way, WAY overboard wit...more

I went through this book like air, but it definitely had substance. Love the sense of humor Coben gives his characters, and also the comedic timing - using it to lighten up a particular part of the story. He cultivates the characters very well and introduces them and their stories in a very subtle way - no drawn out descriptions of their physical looks, rather just relying on the reader's imagination. I like that.

This book was suspenseful right up til "The End" and definit...more

I just finished reading The Woodsand frankly had trouble putting it down all weekend. I confess I like Coben's style of writing and I love mystery thrillers, but this was truly the best of his that I have read (which is most all of them). The title is the unspoken character in the book and the ending doesn't tie everything up with a neat little bow, but leaves you wanting more. His character development is wonderful and his plot twists are very subtle and sometimes not what you want. You fee...more
