This is an excellent book, and it deserves a better review than I have time to give it.

Paulson applies Shannon's Information Theory to literature.

Boiled down: Art is the result of personally constructing meaning from 'noise' in a transferred message or signal. This ambiguity is what makes artistic interpretation possible, as the recipient of the message must look inside of him or herself to fill in the gaps. That's why art creates emotions inside of us. It asks something of us. It's a partial me
