I have to be honest here. A chapter or so into the book, I was rather disappointed. It was like a shallow chick-lit; all about trying to find a guy. Nothing wrong with chick-lit when I'm in the mood for it, but I was expecting something a little more substantial.
Well, that all changed when God suddenly showed up in the storyline. Literally. And He wasn't who I expected. And that made me think. (Not necessarily agree, but think.) And suddenly all the witty romantic dialogue wasn't so ...more

Never the Bride was a different sort of book. Jessie Stone is 35 and wants to be married. We start the book by joining her at a speed dating session. Speed dating in this book involved speaking to a member of the opposite sex for 8 minutes before moving on to the next one. At the end of the night, each left contact info with the manager, along with the names of the people they wanted to get to know better. None of the guys picked her.

“You don’t know me yet, so there is no reason you should care that I’m stuck on a highway with a blowout. But maybe we can relate to each other.” Don’t you just love these first lines of the book? They totally made me want to know what happened next. This story definitely went in a direction I didn’t expect, and I was pleasantly surprised!

Never the bride was a Christmas gift to me from my eldest sister. I come from a huge family and nearly all of my sisters are married, except me. I started reading this book today, while dealing with some drama with a boy friend. Half way through today, he broke up with me, half way through this book I realized what God wants from me. Never have I read a book that struck home. I was in tears for most of the book, because I relate so much to Jessie. This line from the book struck home for me. "...more
So I randomly picked this book up from my local library expecting something totally different judging by the cover. This book actually surprised me in a good way though. If you are not a "spiritual" or religious person however, you may not like it.
In this book you meet Jessie. Some things to about Jessie: 1) She's allergic to chocolate (but she eats it anyway even though her face gets puffy because it swells up! It cracked me up though how she kept bags of M&M's in her de...more

Jessie Stone is 35, unmarried, and beginning to despair of ever finding the man for her. She has spent her entire life planning her wedding, dreaming of the perfect proposal, and journaling about her perfect man. But one day God shows up in the flesh, looking like a human being. That is, He appears to Jessie. No one else can see Him, which makes for some very awkward situations when He is around. Jessie and I are the same age, and even though I have been married for seven years, I felt much of ...more
This book was one of the most pleasant surprises I've had in awhile. I would call it chick lit with depth. Just Saturday I posted reviews of some of my favorite non-fiction authors, Eric and Leslie Ludy, and their book "When God Writes Your Love Story" was one of them. This book is such a compliment to the concepts the Ludys talk about. I loved watching the way it might play out if you actually gave God the pen to your life and let Him write your love story. Only in a very humorous fas...more
I loved this book, I read it in one afternoon I loved it so much.
I really wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the premise. A 30 something woman who can’t fall in love embarks on a romance with God – in the flesh – here on earth!
Could the authors pull it off??
Oh. Yeah.
This book is fantastic! So good in fact I want to read it over and over. What I loved so much is the authors never put words in God’s mouth. All the examples of what God did in the ...more

Never the Bride by Cheryl McKay and Rene Gutteridge is a charming novel of romance and faith. Jessie Stone has always lived by the rules; her friends can set their watches by her punctuality, and she's almost OCD in her need for order and control. She's lived all of her 34 years waiting for Mr. Right to sweep her off her feet, filling 109 journals with dreams of the perfect marriage proposal and wedding. Speed dating and online match services aren't working, but when God literally steps in and o...more
How did I end up with THIS book?? I read the back... the chick's been a bridesmaid a bunch of times and can't find Mr. Right... sounded up my alley.
Then God showed up. In the form of a hot guy.
Holy Hell.

This was nothing what I expected and absolutely a delight to read! This book reminded me in some ways like Bridget Jones Diary. (Only a lot cleaner). It was very funny to read. I absolutely love the way the author told the story. The voice of the main character was absolutely perfect; I felt as though I was listen to a story told by one of my best friends.
I wasn't sure what to think about having God as a main character in this story. In past experiences, the stories that feature...more
While Never the Bride is a romance, it is not your typical love story. How many times does God talk to a woman that's been a bridesmaid eleven times and offer to write her love story for her? And not just talk to her, but appear to her as just an ordinary guy not a gray bearded old man.
Mixed in with the romance and humor is an important message of following God's will in our lives. Jessie has been looking for the perfect man for many years (she turns 35 during the course of the story) bu...more

This fiction book was a different pace for me. It seemed to be in the realm of chick lit. Jessie Stone has always wanted to be married in her thirties craved a home and husband. She attributed that craving to her parents. God shows up to show her way to her soul mate, and with much drama she quits her long-time dead end job and starts a new business. With an ex-boyfriend, her male friend, and everything there is much high jinks. This book was very shallow, because this woman couldn’t find h...more
When I started reading "Never the Bride" I thought I knew how it would end, but just like life it's full of surprises.
Jesse Stone is 34, still looking for "Mr. Right", and life is not going the way she planned.
After meeting God, Jesse is given the choice to surrender her purple pen and let God write her love story, what girl wouldn't want that just as long as he gets "IT" right ;)

At its base level, the purpose of this book is a message about a loving God knowing each of us, and us learning to overcome our own faults and trusting Him enough to do what he asks us to do. I found the premise of the book, however, actually absurd and irreverent. I know the authors didn't intend for it to be thus, and though I read the book very quickly and it was entertaining, it was very far fetched. I just couldn't get over my uncomfortableness with their "modern and creative" ha...more
Never the Bride is the story of Jessie Stone. Since she was a little girl, Jessie has dreamed of her wedding day. Not just the wedding, but the proposal as well. And not just 'the' proposal... but hundreds!
Yes, with her purple feather pen in hand, Jessie has spent most of her life planning that special day with that special guy. She has her story all written out... she just needs the man that fits into it. At 35, every man she meets is a prospect. She's wondering if this special guy wi...more

I know you don’t know me, but I’ll admit it –I’m a drama queen. Hopefully, I am not a drama queen in the negative sort or connotation that this label elicits, but in the very fact that I’m in charge of the drama program at my church. Why do I tell you this? It’s because of the advice that my pastor always gives me- he says, “Please pick the comedy skits, because you get to people’s hearts through the back door with them, not hitting them over the head with the heavy stuff, it just sort of gen...more
Fabulously fun read and eye opening for some introspective. When I first picked up this book I was thinking of the film "27 Dresses" then as I started to read I was thinking of "My Best Friend's Wedding". As far as entertainment this book is up there with those films if not even more enjoyable. What would you do if God started appearing to just you to tell you to let Him write 'your' love story? That is what Jessie has to decide and it is quite the emotional adventure watchin...more
Whenever you read a book you go into it with preconceived ideas. Always. Whether it be from the cover, the blurb, a review or your own experiences, you always have some sort of expectation. It's great when those expectations are met and it's disappointing when they're not.

I admit I expected this book to be in the same line like Joan Brady´s "God on a Harley" but I was wrong. The main character of this book, Jessie Stone, was a role model for a TSTL-heroine, pathetic and continuously complaining about her fate not to be married. Her main goal in life was to have a family and someone who loves her - what is per se a valid goal for (almost) everyone. This plot alone to find Mr. Right could fill a book and the author had the nice...more

The premise of the story (spoiler alert) is that God visits and is writing the love story for Jessica. I found it really annoying at times how even after believing God really was appearing to her, that she put up such a fuss about doing the things he asked her to do, and was so quick to lose faith if everything didn't go just how she thought it should or if God didn't agree with her. Turns out it was part of the message, so it made a great point, and the story and message is fun and faith prom...more
This was a fun read. At first I was a bit concerned that God was a main character appearing to Jessie as a man that only she could see. But, who wouldn't like to have an face to face conversation with God? This was not a deep book, but it reinforced the importance of relying on God. This book as left me thinking about marriage proposals, and I am curious just how friends and family popped the question.
A highly reviewed book about a young woman obsessed with getting married but unsuccessful in finding a husband. She encounters God in a persona none of us would ever recognize. She is skeptical and others think she is probably psycho. But as she unexpectedly encounters God He teaches her so much about love and allowing Him to create "a love story beyond her wildest dreams."
Another one that got me from the title. I wasn't familiar with the title but since God was one of the main characters, I figured it had to be clean. The main character is ALL over the map! It reminds me of why I left the Singles Branch and returned to the family Ward...I need distance. Single chicks are psycho!! (and yes I am aware that I am single)
This book was amazing. I would love to have this book on my shelf at home. The book talks about how this girl stopped believing in God and she is on the hunt for a husband. She has never been married, but has always been the bridesmaid and she is lonely. She is trying everything possible to be a wife and to find a husband. It goes through how God wants our everything. God knows what he has planned for us and he will bring a guy into our life when it is meant to be. We can't rush God's plan!
I liked this book. It wasn't just a sappy love story, it had humor and wit, but also a interesting twist near the end. There were a few things I would take issue with, but all in all a good read for those who still look for that special one who just doesn't seem to want to show up.
I thought this book sounded like a light, funny read. However the main character was so annoying, I could only stomach this book for 60 pages. I felt that if you made the character 14 instead of 34 her behavior would be identical to that described in the book. Maybe the book got better after that, but I guess I didn't care to find out.
I think the book started out with an interesting premise, but took a really bad turn somewhere along the way. I think it somewhat recovered at the end, but it was too late to save the story.
It was a good read. Enjoyed it and who can't relate to a woman in search of Prince Charming. You learn though that you shouldn't be searching for him but that he will find you.
I was expecting your typical chick lit read but it had a fun twist to it. Still cheesy but I enjoyed the new take on the single girl's pursuit for a man.
