The Outside Shot by Walter Dean Myers is a sports book that had me flipping pages quickly from the beginning.

The story begins with Lonnie, a teenager from Harlem is granted a scholarship to a small school in Indiana to play basketball. He has never been outside of New York, and attending Montclare State, he is one of the only African Americans on campus. It's hard for him to adjust to this.

Lonnie begins to tryout for the basketball team and is very nervous whether or not he will make the travel...more

Since my last good reads book was Hoop`s by Walter Dean Myers, Walter Dean inspired me to read his next sequel called “The Outside Shot.” I picked this book because; since I read the first one I would already understand this book more than others. Walter Dean is a very creative writer. In this book Lonnie gets a full ride scholarship to a mid –western college that is known for their basketball team. Lonnie use to gamble and fix basketball games. This is very bad. Then in college he started this...more

Lonnie Jackson is back and this time he’s in college. He grew up in the streets of Harlem and had no idea that he would eventually get a college scholarship from Montclare, a university in Indiana. He leaves Harlem to pursue his career in basketball. Once at college, he realizes that there aren’t many African-Americans around his campus. Not only that, but he realizes that most of the people playing at a college level had skills, and that surprised him. He feels a bit nervous at first, but then...more

In this sequel to Hoops, the protagonist goes to a prestigious Indiana college on basketball scholarship. His growth continues as he confronts conflicts with teammates, a challenging academic schedule he cannot handle, real effort to make the team and get along with the coach enough to play, and a moral conflict when an outside business owner tries to get him involved in the businessman’s group betting on point spreads in the games. The only questionable parts in the novel come with the protagon...more

Lonnie is now in college where his talent in basketball has brought him. However, when he reaches college, it isn't all that he expect. There is more behind the simple game of basketball than he had originally planned it to be. Growing up in Harlem certainly couldn't have helped him much when he meets all these other great basketball players, all like him wanting to make it as a professional player.

Overall, this book was really good, it talked a lot about Lonnie defying the odds against him and...more

1. My book is called the outside shot. The author is Walter dean Myers. The genre is sports. The content overview is over basketball and academics. The intended audience is for young adults.
2. At the beginning he lives in a rough part of town. He liked to play basketball and he tries to join the team at his high school. He has to get his grade up in order to join the team and though out the whole book it's a struggle for him to get a basketball scholarship.
3. He gets on the team at Midwestern...more

The Outside Shot is another masterpiece by Walter Dean Myers. It really kept me hooked because I was always thinking what would happen next in Lonnie’s life. I like basketball although it is not my favorite but this book was good so it didn’t even matter. I could connect to the hopes Lonnie had, which were to make on the team and inspire to one day make to the big leagues. The challenges he faces along the way, were a nice to touch because they built suspense in the story. Like an most good boo...more

I read the book "The Outside Shot", by Walter Dean Myers. This book is about a boy named Lonnie Jackson going to college outside in the countryside. He doesn't like his new coaches very much. Going to class for him was way harder than he think it would be compared to work in high school. He meets a girl name Sherry and she caught Lonnie's eye.

I like how this book was like a series to the book "Hoops". It talks about what happens to Lonnie after he won the game and got a scholarship from a colle...more

I read the book the outside shot. It was about an African-American basketball player from Harlem who is going to play college basketball for a small college in Indiana. This book is about him adapting to life outside of Harlem. It is one big adventure for him where he gets into some trouble, finds love, and gets to help change people's lives.
The book starts out very slowly but once you get halfway through this book the real storyline takes off and lots of excitement takes place. I would recom...more

Lonnie leaves Harlem for his opportunity to play college ball in a small Midwestern town. He is not strong academically and not motivated in that arena. For a street smart youth, he is naive about the troubles/temptations that face him. Hopefully athletes are better informed about NCAA regs, but there are always some kids that think rules aren't for them.

As much as I love basketball, this book was not written for me. I do think it would be a very good book for high school athletes to read, es...more

In the book "The Outside Shot" the protagonist Lonnie is offered a scholarship to play basketball at Montclare. He faces a some challenges by being in generally white area. He also gets mixed up in some business about fixing the score in games for local gamblers. He has to be strong to overcome these obstacles, which is somewhat like Elizer from "Night". Both are good books but I like this book better because its more relatable to me that a concentration camp. I would recomend this book to anyon...more

A sequel to Hoops, this book continues the life of Lonnie Jackson, a hoops star hoping to reach the NBA. Before reading this book however, I highly recommend reading Hoops first. Reading Hoops will show the reader how Lonnie evolves through the 2 books in many ways. That is a reason why many people read books and is definitely evident in Hoops and The Outside Shot.

Like I said, The Outside Shot is a sequel to Hoops. Both books follow Lonnie Jackson. In The Outside Shot, he is a bit older and in c...more

In this book, i learned about this basketball player. He has to choose between money and basketball. In my opinion this book is not so exciting but a fun book to read in your spare time. It shows how people feel when they choose to gamble. Then the person has to stop gambling and find the right road. Like a lot of other books, the main character chooses the right road in the end. I also learned somewhat about college, different races and about gambling. I hope this might help me in the future ma...more

This book is very touching because I feel like I am in the same position as him. I want to make it big one day and I know the road will be tough. The main character Lonnie wants to play in the pros one day and living in Harlem is tough for him. The one thing that gets him out of trouble is basketball. At the end he finally achieves his goal and gets a scholarship to a school for basketball. Hopefully I can do the same and make it big.

Even though there was not of dangerous event happening in this book, it is still a very interesting book about a life of someone who got into college. The main character, Lonnie, wanted to graduate from college with a scholarship by playing basketball. In this book Lonnie went through a lot of tough situations, including a few times that he almost got into trouble with the polices and a time where one of his friends got killed.

In this book you really see a lot of characters and amazing personality descriptions. While reading The Outside Shot for example of good understanding of characters and there development is there are so many different characters in the book and all of the ones the author wanted you to feel were important did. Each of the supporting and main characters really changed over the coarse of the book and felt so real.
Lonnie is the main character of this book. The beginning of the book is very good es...more

The protagonist Lonnie Jackson has talent when it comes to basketball but not so much at school. He's from harlem and he gets reconized for his trmendous talent. Scouts then give him a scholarship to the college of Montclair. Even though Lonnie has street smarts, he struggles at school. He isn't the best student, and has to pick between his dream of playing in the pros or having a successful future.

You can actually feel the tense in this book. Perfect book for beginners who want a successful life. Espiecially the ones who only hae a little bit of time for it.
Lonnie Jackson wanted to become successful and obtain his goal. His goal was to get a basketball scholarship at a college. But he didn't know he needed a lot more than to be good at basketball. He goes through tough classes, competition with other people, rules, and his temptation to helping out gamblers. His life completely changed...more

From the box:
Obviously a boy book based on basketball. This is the sequel to Hoops. The protagonist is 18 and in college. I'd say for readers 14 and older on this one.
The 1984 Harlem slang is pretty funny.

I felt the Outside Shot was a slow paced book and that it could've gone a little faster, without some parts, it was a good book though with everything from basketball to love, not a lot of action though for a book about basketball,it really did not grab my attention, and it was just really bad at some points in the book, there were even meanless parts of the book, such as when one of the main characters teammates gets stuck in a music shop, and they have to go fetch him out, it is a book I would...more

Lonnie Jackson in The Outside Shot by Walter Dean Myers was a great book because it shows how a kid from Harlem with the dreams to play in the NBA has a chance to achieve that dream. Lonnie was the main character he was give a scholarship to Montclare College. He had to make a descion to leave for school or stay with his poor family. He picked to go to school and get himself an education. He met three friends there and he met a girl named Sherry who's determined to be a track star. They got into...more
