The lively natures of four children of the 1920's are dampened when their mother brings home a copy of Emily Post's book on etiquette. Distraught over the lack of fun brought about by their mother's insistence they behave properly at all times, they come up with a plan to rid their family of Ms. Post's influence.

Though today's students likely have never heard of Emily Post, they will still enjoy this playful story, especially if they're given a bit of background on who she was and why More...

If you can't say something nice....

You can still write a quick review! The mother of unruly children decides to whip them into shape with a little Emily Post. The children are miserable learning how they should get along in the world. In an effort to get their mother to give up Emily Post, they begin implementing Post's suggestions on their mother. The silver needs to be polished, servants are needed....until the mother finally relents and kicks the cursed Emily Post examples out More...

A quirky story about some very unruly clever kids trying to get away from Emily Posts’ rules and regulations. I liked the story, but somehow I missed the note at the beginning the first time I read it explaining the ghost like figures in the story, which caused me all sorts of confusion. After I found it and re-read the story, I felt much better about the whole thing. The illustrations are very fun, energetic and bright. The main character looks like a punk pixie and seems a bit out of place wit More...

I don't know, this book was just bizarre to me. It tells the story of a little girl whose manners are under scrutiny thanks to Emily Post's book. She's weirdly visited by the ghosts of Emily Post's past (but that transition is awkward and bizarre) and winds up using her mother's precious book of manners against her (I appreciated the child's smarts, but it was uncomfortable. She's not a very likeable main character). In the end, the mother sends Emily Post + ghosts packing, much to the relief of More...

(I am removing one star from my rating to balance the author's offspring giving it 5.Spare me....)

Ms Huget missed the point of Emily Post, only mentioning in the afterword that Post believed "that etiquette wasn't just about following specific rules...but about treating other people with respect, kindness, consideration and honesty".

If she'd had Post's ghost (nice rhyme)appear with the other imaginary people and point that out to Mother and children, she'd have More...

This is a wonderful story about Emily Post and her books on etiquette. She has been the bane of many children growing up, as they are constantly reminded to "mind your manners." But this story takes an unusual twist as the characters, ghostlike in appearance in the illustrations, come to life to be constant reminders of the childrens' etiquette failings. And they become comforting allies as the children turn the focus on their Mom, for a satisfying result. It's a little bit of hist More...

The artwork was beautiful and perfect for capturing action and emotions. It's unfortunate that it was paired with such a jumbled and misleading story. While the story does encourage creative thought, it is to spite their mother and her attempt to control her slobby, destructive children. I think the problem was putting the story in the misbehaving child's perspective without much depth to the child's personality.

I think a caregiver would be More...

This book does not really teach kids good behavior. For the children in the book, manners seem to be an inconvenience. Rules of etiquette ruin their lives and their fun. The book opens up with the line, "Everything was just dandy till that Emily Post book showed up." The main goal of the children is to get rid of the etiquette book their mom bought or essentially get away with doing whatever they want.

What happens when the mother of four children buys one of the first copies of Emily Post Etiquette? The children go nuts until they think of a way to turn the tables on their mother. Beautifully illustrated using a washed-out blue for the etiquette-character-images who "temporarily" move in.

Funny, good illustrations, and unique, at least to me. I have never seen a book about manners for kids before without being preachy about what to do/not to do. Can be helpful in discussing the reason for manners and maybe even make up rules for manners as a class in the class. Fun!

Part picture book, part Emily Post biography. I really liked the pictures in this book. I was immediately drawn to it due to the Elvin looking child on the cover, and it was clever how the author threw in the biographical information. Not my favorite picture but but it was enjoyable.

I love manners and I really wanted to like this title. Hmph. When the children tire of Emily Post's advice being used against them, they turn the tables on mother with her wilting flowers and smudgy silverware. It was okay...maybe if read by the right person...just didn't feel it.

Very cute picture book about manners and how they are for everyone. After mom buys an Emily Post book and insists her children behave properly, but when the children point out that Mom could also use some etiquette lessons the situation just might change

When mother brings home Emily Posts large blue book of etiquette life becomes less fun for four young children. A little plotting and pointing out of mother's lack of proprieties may be in order.

An older grade picture book on manners that will delight kids who have tried to live up to parental expectations. I love the clever solution to their problem, and think kids will enjoy it too!

I loved this fun story. It's historical, funny and very clever. The illustrations were quite cool too. A fun take on the idea of etiquette.

I doubt that many children would know who Emily Post is--or care-- but I'm going to consider this for Alzheimer's storytime.

I was really hoping for something better than unruly children outwitting their mother into getting rid of their etiquette book.
