This is an uncomfortable read. It is fabulous story telling, and the themes are ones that need to be told. But it is not warm and fuzzy, and nor does it need to be to be told well. Siri Mitchell is an incredible author and her writing is good. She delves into the harder sides of characters lives and deals with stories that need to be told in a manner where many would just walk away from the pain and hardships.

The Book of Susannah. Or a story in the Book of Daniels. In the biblical version, 2 men (I can't remember if they were of a specific status) attempt to take advantage of a woman named Susannah and afterwards accuse her of committing adultery; only Daniel steps up to defend her.
I only kind of expected it halfway into the story, and now that I'm thinking as I write this, I realise that there are more parallels than I realise. Why the significance of the Captain's name didn't hit me until now just...more

Susannah Phillips is a good girl. Instructed by the Puritan community of Stoneybrooke, Massachusetts to be obedient, God-fearing, hard-working and modest, Susannah does not question her beliefs or way of life. But then Daniel Holcombe, captain in the king’s army comes to board with her family. Daniel’s joyful attitude towards life strains Susannah’s understanding of God’s will and a woman’s fate. When she realizes she is in love with Daniel, Susannah must make a choice between obeying Puritan mo...more

When I started this book, I thought it was going to be a typical historical fiction romance. This book is anything but typical. There is a depth and beauty to the story that really is far beyond the norm. The writing is beautiful, and I really look forward to reading more by Siri Mitchell.

In a few words:
Is it even possible to give you a short review of this book? Not really. I will tell you that it's a keeper. Descriptive adjectives that come to mind: Thought-provoking, moving, original, skillfully-written, and although not warm and fuzzy or happily-ever-after, filled with hope. Also note that this is not "Amish fiction".
My Full Review:
I stayed up until 2 a.m. to finish this book last night (this morning).

Siri Mitchell is my current favorite author. The first of her books that I read is Chateau of Echoes, the story of an American who runs an exclusive bed and breakfast in a chateau in France, an American novelist who visits, and the fifteenth century diary that connects them. It's great.

Love's Pursuit takes place in Massachusetts during the Puritan era. Susannah is a puritan girl who on the outside seems to be the eye of perfections. However, Susannah thinks herself to be a sinner and judges herself harshly. A captain from the "King's army" comes to their village because he has heard reports of savages. I do not want to give too much away, but will Susannah fall in love with a man from her own puritan village or with the Captain and his heathen ways? You will have to read to fi...more
This is a book written by Siri Mitchell"Love's Pursuit".
The era was 1600's and little different then most books I have read but still Siri made the characters and the locale come to life. Susannah is a young woman with high morals. She believes in doing the right thing all the time but finds she has dreams that urge her to do just the opposite at times.

Susannah Phillips is the picture perfect Puritan woman, and more than one of the town's bachelors knows this. She has dreamed of the day when her John Prescotte will seek her hand; however, if the powerful Simeon Wright has anything to say about it, that will not happen. He wants her for his own.
Susannah knows that she is not the righteous individual everyone thinks her to be and struggles with her own sin nature. Then Daniel Holcombe moves into town to train the militia in defense against "sava...more

So....yes. I really liked the characters. And the story was really well done. I don't expect life to always end happily. I liked the romance and the way Susannah grew from it. I liked the intrigue in the village and I REALLY like 'small-hope', the alternate 'main character'. I liked seeing things from her totally different point of view, and seeing her change. That was really inspiring to me.

I recently read Siri Mitchell's A Constant Heart and was not overly impressed with the plot and characters, although I was highly impressed by her attention to historic detail. I was also distracted by the use of two first-person point-of-view narrators; the narrators would often abruptly switch and it was hard to know which character was speaking at first (yes, even though one was male and the other female). At the same time I borrowed A Constant Heart from the library, I also picked up Love's...more

Love's Pursuit is a Christian romance that takes place in a small Puritan community in 17th century Massachusetts. The heroine, Susannah Phillips, is the perfect Puritan woman--faithful, obedient, and kind. However, she constantly torments herself with thoughts that she is "not good enough"--either for God or for the zealous, rule-bound society she lives in. When Susannah meets Daniel Holcombe, an English (and therefore very much NOT Puritan) captain sent to protect the community of Stoneybrooke...more
I've read this three times now. Do I need to say anything further about how I love it? Okay, if I must...
Love's Pursuit is not your typical romance. The POV changes are sometimes challenging, the introspection reminds one more of a literary work and the theological musings are in keeping with the Puritan characters. I so appreciate that Siri didn't make this story easy on us. She didn't insult her readers with cotton candy, but gave us some steak to chew over instead.

Puritan Susannah Phillips has tried all her life to live the puritan faith while inside her exists doubts that make her believe herself unworthy. There is also another woman in their small community who thinks herself unworthy and wishes only to disappear. There is also a man named Simeon who not only thinks too much of himself but while passing himself off as a true puritan has no conscience. Have you ever been afraid to believe in God’s love?
I wrestled with this question along with the main characters of Siri Mitchell’s novel Love’s Pursuit.
Love’s Pursuit takes place in the Puritan village of Stoneybrooke, Massachusetts, during the 1640’s. The story starts out like any typical historical romance. First, we meet Susannah Phillips, a gently-reared girl, unaware of her own beauty. She obeys all the rules, including setting her sights on the right man to marry. Enter Daniel Holcombe, ha...more

I really want to give this book 4.5 stars because it was fantastic. The beginning was a bit slow (and a tad confusing until I knew all the characters POV) but once it got going, I had to force myself to put it down and go to sleep. (I even thought about it at work when I wasn't able to read!)

This book was such a pleasant surprise! I didn't know what to expect going in, but I felt immediately sucked into the Puritan world and on the edge of my seat with the intensity of certain parts. Sometimes books with a religious message can be overbearing and pretentious, but this one was sweet and a comforting reminder of my own trust that God loves me and knows me. So glad I read this one!

I started this book out really confused. The author used two different point of views, and wrote both of them in first person. It took me quite a while to figure that she had switched characters in the beginning. The first time I was totally lost when the main character went from talking about the man she hoped to marry to having her husband standing right before her. It was probably the third or fourth switch before I realized that they were two different characters speaking/thinking. It made m...more
Sometimes when you reach the end of a book, you realize that the story you were reading was much deeper than you'd understood. It leaves you a little breathless, thankful to have read such a gift, and you know it's a story you'll be thinking about for a while. "Love's Pursuit" is one of those books.

I have read a few of Siri's books now and I really do think that she is just so original in her writing that I always wonder what she will bring me, the reader, next. In "A Constant Heart" she took us inside Queen Elizabeth's England and the unbelievable trends and lifestyles that went along with being a part of her court. In "Love's Pursuit" we go into early America and a Puritan community where Susannah is considered one of the ultimate, perfect Puritans. Only she knows better, she has many fl...more

OK, my kids were waiting for me in the car as I quickly cruised the New Fiction aisle at the library... Historical fiction? Sign me up! After a few chapters, I looked at the spine and saw is said "Historical Romance". That's a category now? But I read on, and I enjoyed it. There were many interesting historical facts that I found fascinating, and I am pretty sure that this book has the only known sensual romance scene surrounding a regular weekly nitpicking. Who knew lice were so... sexy? If you...more
The last chapter brought up so much Christian theology, but it was extremely on target. Really in-depth precepts that could only be explained by a wounded heart healing.
I was originally confused that there were two story lines by to different narrators, but once I grasped the little symbol that let me know there was a change in narrators, I TOTALLY got it. I think this would be worth reading again, truly. I really loved this book

This was one of the worst romance/inspirational books that I've read. It started slow, a little to much of the puritan religion, everything is a sin aspect. Just when it started to get interesting and you think that the girl is going to be rescued from a marriage with an abusive man, her true love is murdered by said abusive man. But thats ok because she realised God always will love her. BLECH. Just not my type of book at all.
