This book tells the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale ‘The Princess and the Pea’ in which a young prince seeks to find a ‘real’ princess to marry. When a bedraggled girl knocks on the castle doors amidst a stormy night, the king and queen doubt her claims of being a ‘real’ princess. They decide to put her to the test, placing a pea under twenty mattresses and allowing her to sleep on it. Only a ‘real’ princess would object to such discomfort. In true fairytale style, the princess discove...more
This short fairytale tells the story of a Prince in search of a “real” princess. He searches far and wide for a real princess but returns home alone, sad and disappointed. One stormy night there is a surprise visit to the castle from a young girl claiming that she in fact is a real princess. The queen decides to test this by placing a pea at the bottom of the princess’s bed layered with 20 mattresses. The next morning the queen was shocked to hear that the princess had such a terrible sleep as o...more
This short story by Hans Christian Andersen is a delightful read for children in their early years. Based on the life of a prince who is desperate to find himself a princess, the prince goes in search to the four corners of the earth with no luck. He returns home to find a princess knocking on the town gate. Astonished, the queen herself lets her in and agrees to give her a place to sleep for the night. Upon revealing her identity the queen decides to test the validity of her claim. so, the quee...more
We all know the story of the princess and the pea so i wont bore you with the details. The reason why ive inlcuded this in my review is because of the interesting and inventful way it was used in a year 1 school. Apart from looking at speech, recap and characters of the story, the teacher and class worked very hard on writing their own version but through a play- style.
the teacher wrote a short play script and used 3 chn to silent act the parts of King, Queen and Prince and another 3 to read ou...more

This book is by Hans Christian Andersen and I have read it on and finished it on 3-7-12. The main character is The Prince. The supporting characters are the princess, The queen, The maid, and The fake princesses. The setting is the Castle and The kingdom. The conflict was that the prince wanted to find a princess but most were fake. The resolution was that he found a princess;to make sure the maid took off all the bedding and laid a pea under it. Then she laid down 20 mattresses and the next mor...more
This is the story of the princess and the pea, in this version it is a tiger princess. She travels a long way before a storm hits and she seeks shelter in the Kings castle. The Prince has been trying to find a suitable wife and when this girl claims to be a Princess the Queen and the Prince decided to test her by placing a pea underneath a mound of mattresses and blankets. Only a true Princess will be able to feel the pea underneath all those things. In the morning the Princess tells of her slee...more
This is the story of a prince and a princess. The prince wants to marry a true, real, princess. The princess, however, was so sensitive that not even twenty matresses can help her from being bruised from a pea. One thing that was great about this book were the illustrations. The prince searches everywhere for his princess, even the four corners of the earth. By nothing but chance, a princess is knocking on the towns gate when he returns. The queen, and others, questioned if this young girl was a...more
How to rate this book? First off, I'll start by saying that I remember hardly any picture books from my childhood. I know my mom read me lots and lots and lots of them, but there are only a few favorites that stick out in my mind. This is one of them. I must have read this a million times--I pored over the pictures and probably had the text memorized. Child me gives this book 5 stars. But adult me has more issues with it. I still find the illustrations quite gorgeous, but the overall message of...more
The story of "The Princess and The Pea" is a classic fable that young girls love. I loved this story when I was a little girl and always thought what would it be like to be a princess for a day. Primary children would have no problem reading this book. There are one to two sentences per page creating a quick read for children. This story has been retold countless number of times to include animated and real life characters. The animated animals in this book, tigers, lions, elephants, and pigs, a...more
In the story the prince is trying to find a true princess that he can marry. He is quite picky and cannot find a suitable bride. One night during a storm, a girl shows up at the palace in need of shelter. She claims to be a princess. The queen is uncertain so she places a pea under 20 mattresses and blankets. In the morning, the girl says she had a miserable night and is covered in bruises from the horrible lump in the mattresses. This proves that she is a true princess, and the prince takes her...more

This classic fairy tale is beautifully told and just as beautifully illustrated. The story is a simple enough tale that has a fantastic moral. With each princess you learn something that princesses are not. At the end of it all, a meek, bedraggled princess, soaked from the rain claims she is a princess. Being the most humble and otherwise most princess-like, they had to be certain. I love the way the book focuses on the favorite princess being humble, mild-mannered, and kind-hearted. My children...more

This book was one of my favorite fairy tales growing up. I always thought it was so funny how a princess could sleep on a ton of mattresses and still feel a pea! I remember sometime after hearing this story, we had peas for dinner one night and I wanted to try it out for myself. I took my mattress and my sister's mattress off our bunk beds and tried my hardest to "feel" the pea. To say the least, I was very disappointed with my results. This book is great for children because it is a funny way o...more
I enjoyed the fun illustrations with a variety of animals trying out as princess (elephant, bear, hippo, etc.) and the leading felines, the tiger queen and princess and the lion prince. I have never been that big a fan of the actual fairytale, though, and this one brought nothing new to story. For a more appealing definition of what makes a princess, I recommend The Princess and the Pea by Lauren Child.
The Princess and the Pea by by Hans Christian Andersen, adapted and illustrated by Janet Stevens, is a short, funny version featuring animal characters. It's a story of a prince who wants to marry a genuine princess, and one so sensitive that she can feel a pea through twenty matresses. The search for the right princess is very amusing, with a variety of animals encountered.
The text tells the tale briefly, but with flair.

This story was interpreted by Paul Galdone, who is the illustrator of this book. Based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale, the Prince is looking for a real princess to marry but cannot find her. This is a really cute book about how a prince's mother put a pea under 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds to see if this young lady is a "real" princess, that has a real sensitivity to feel a pea under all those mattresses and feather beds. after she passes the test and felt the pea the prince married her. this is a classic book that has been told to every little girl. i remember putting a pea under my bed when i was little just to see if i could feel it. that way i would know if i was a "real" p...more

This book is about a prince searching for a princess when one arrives at his kingdom asking to stay the night. The queen allows her to stay but tucks a pea under 20 mattresses to see if she notices, because only a true princess would notice. In the morning the princess exclaims that she had a terrible nights sleep and the queen knows she is truly a princess. I loved this book as a kid and think it is a cute tale that all kids should have the chance to read.
This is a nice book. The illustrations by Dorothee Duntze are nice.
I've never quite understood this tale. First of all, 20 mattresses would have squashed a pea. Secondly, not even a princess could feel a pea through all that. But even if she did, what does that say about her? That she is so fussy that she is bothered by a mere pea would be reason to disqualify her from marrying the prince.
Yeah, I know; I read too much into these things.

I read this book to the second grade class I was doing my observations in. I chose this book because they were learning about fairy tales and I knew that this was a story they had not read in class. This book is the basic Princess and the Pea fairy tale where everyone lives happily ever after. The class seemed to really enjoy the book. They had a hard time differentiating the princess and the queen because they were both tigers in fancy dresses.
This is one of my favorite fair tales from when I was younger. THe princess cannot sleep because there is a pea under her mattress no matter how many mattress they piles on top she can still feel the pea. This book is full of colorful pictures that are simple. They still manage to capture the child's attention because they are a little silly. Kids will be drawn into the story because they will really want to know what is going to happen next.
What an awesome, awesome book. I love any story regarding "princesses" because for little girls, no matter how old the book is, that topic will interest them. I love the cute storyline of this book and I hope to read this book to my little girl one day. I would definitely recommend this fairy tale to anyone that asks, because it is filled with colors, good vocab, an intriguing storyline, and will activate creativity in a child's mind.
This tale was okay to me, but maybe for other girls they might consider the story really cute. I thought it was kind of weird how the prince decided to marry the princess who could feel the pea under a whole bunch of mattress. If I were to read this story to my students I would only read to my kindergarten students because the little girls might like it. I would like to hear everyone's different opinion on the story.
This was another book that I read for my genre study. I really liked this story and the illustrations. The pictures gave a new silly twist on the tale and made it more relatable to kids. This story is very sweet and it also makes me laugh. I would read this in a younger kids classroom and make sure that they can see the pictures. I also really like this author and would recommend his other books.
This is a remake of the princess and the pea with a twist involving animals... I remember seeing this play as a kid and it was so funny to me. I like how the prince finds his princess with a pea. My favorite part of reading the book to the class is one of my first grade girls said, my mom always told me to eat my peas to become a princess; she was right! I love kids imagination and random words of wisdom.
This fairy tale told a story about the prince’s expectations for his princess. The king and queen were on the quest to help their son find love and marriage. The prince wanted her to be beautiful and lovely, but his parents were more concerned about her royalty. Both girls and boys will enjoy this tale because of the constant solutions the royal family has for their prince.
This is a really good book to use in a second grade classroom. First, the book is easy to read. I would practice shared reading with this particular story because it allows the children to practice their reading skills silently. I would also do a descriptive writing activity with this book where the students write about a story that was told to them by their parents.

Different versions of Andersen's stories and of folk & fairy tales provide readers with entirely different experiences - I'm reviewing the one illustrated by Dorothee Duntze. I appreciate the talent of the artist, and all the effort to add rich details and appropriate colors and designs... but I have to say that I, personally, did not care for the style of illustrations.
This was one of my favourite fairytales as a child. I always thought it was absurd how someone was able to feel a tiny pea through twenty mattresses and and twenty pillows. At some point after reading the tale I started to resent princesses for a while for being spoiled and phony. Besides, the fragile and spoiled princess was a constant cliche in fairytales but for some reason I really liked the stories.

The prince did not want to marry her so he and the maid left. Then the prince wanted to marry princess pavlova. The prince pretended to be a poor guy to see if she was nice or bad. She was bad. she was mean to the prince so he did not want to marry her anymore and left. Then the prince went home. Princess primrose came to the palace. the prin...more
This is a cute version of the princess and the pea. I can see how these slightly goofy animal versions of the characters would appeal to children, although they didn't really appeal to me. I did find the last line of the story a bit confusing. Why would anyone want to steal the pea?
