Book #74 read in 2012
I don't think I have ever tried to read a story with such an unlikeable main character. Claire is a rude and obnoxious know-it-all. I could barely tolerate the plot because I couldn't get past my annoyance with her. It didn't matter though, because the end result was so unexpected (and not in a good way). At the very least, there should have been SOME clues that would make the ending plausible. But, no. Ugh. I have a few more of this series on my shelf, but I'm not sure I'll...more

This is the second in the Claire Malloy series, and is not my favourite. I happily read series out of sequence so this is the sixth one I have read. Claire decides to go to a murder mystery weekend at the Mimosa Inn and drags her less than enthusiastic teenage daughter with her. Claire is determined to solve the mystery and win the prize, a bottle of champagne. Her boyfriend Peter (a police investigator) ridicules the whole idea of pretend murder games which only makes Claire more determined. Th...more
I picked up this book because I loved the idea of the setting, a murder mystery weekend at a charming Victorian inn. The story wasn't as compelling as I'd hoped, however. Still, I enjoyed protagonist Claire Malloy's sense of humor, as well as teenaged daughter Caron's character, which added some color to the story.

This one left me extremely annoyed and dissatisfied! It didn't play "fair" according to the rules of cozies! The heroine solved the crime using clues that were kept hidden from us.

I started to read this one, and got a few chapters in but had a hard time really getting into it, but I'm sure I will finish it one day
I'm a mystery genre fan and am sometimes given a boxful of mysteries by other people who read them. That's how I got this book. I'd never read Joan Hess before and I found her style of writing to be so overly flowery and cloying (mixed in with occasional random flip insults of people who don't look or behave similarly to the narrator) that I couldn't even finish the book.
