I adore this book. If you want to learn to crochet, or, if you've already got the basics, or heck, if you're really flippin' good and just want a project to work on, this is the book for you. I've gotten several people "hooked" on crochet via this book. One caveat, if you have an early printing, there may be some errors, but you can go to Debbie Stoller's website, and all edits are posted.

This book has been invaluable to me while I have been learning the basics of crochet and expanding my skills. I bought the book already knowing the basic chain, single and double crochet stitches and the lengthy primer with diagrams and photos helped me put that knowledge into context and build upon it. After a few scarves and a beanie hat I tried making granny squares which led to an afghan.

I'm currently working on the Short 'n Sweet bolero which, while more advanced than anything I have tried...more

A good book for a skinny bitch if you're interested in crocheting clothes. Debbie Stoller's book tends to be a little bit size-ist, but that's pretty standard for pattern books these days. Still, the accessories are *great* and very fun to crochet. I did the "First Aid Purse" for my cousin Alex who's going to nursing school, and it was a huge hit. In general, I'd say it's a book worth owning, at any stage or skill level. Stoller has chosen designs that are attractive and entertaining, some very...more

I just made the mohair capelet thingie and it's pretty nice but it's a little weird in the back because it's increased all around so the back isn't flat. I get cranky when patterns could be better. But, it's my first finished crochet thing and I used dc, tr, made shells... and it only took 2 days. Go me! The instructions in the front of this book are awesome for reference. My hand hurts now, though. Might make one of the cardigans but I'm wary of patterns that require one to make several pieces...more

If you are a beginning crocheter this is the perfect book for you. It explains all stitches in detail. In fact, it is the only crochet book I have ever come across that explains where exactly to put your needle and which strand(s) to pick up. It talks about tools, different kinds of yarn and techniques. It shows you how to crochet buttons and button holes, adding tassels, making pompons and how to finish your work with easy to follow instructions and clear illustrations.

Sassy Debbie Stoller has done it again with a book for crocheters and wanna-be crocheters that has all the boldness and excitement of her earlier knitting projects. The stitch instruction section is lively and well illustrated with photos and step-by-step drawings of each stitch progression, and the titles of the sections are are entertaining as they are informative. 40 patterns are included ranging from simple for beginners to advanced for the more skilled. Designs for younger women in particul...more

The title makes the book a little embarrassing to have lying around, but there are a good number of nice patterns that I want to try. Some of the patterns are very odd, too. I haven't tried any yet though, but I have plans to in the near future. The general crochet instructions are clear, too; better than my Jan Eaton book.

This book is amazing. If there were a better word for it, I would use it - but one doesn't exist so I'm going to make one up: Stupendiferous. Debbie Stoller does it again with her instalment on crochet, adding to her numerous knitting books.

As a complete newbie approaching crochet, it was very daunting until my friend lent me a copy of The Happy Hooker. The diagrams and descriptions are just perfect when you're coming into a new craft like this. I needed things lined up plain and simple, and Sto...more

I got this book yesterday, and cannot put it down. I started crocheting a month ago, confused but determined to learn. The last day I have had more epiphanies regarding crocheting - all thanks to this book. As Debbie Stoller says herself, many books on crocheting are more confusing than helpful, lacking basic information such as the fact that one usually crochets through the *two* top loops (and not one, as I did for my first month of crocheting - believing I was doing it correctly). Debbie has...more

A lot of fun and interesting patterns, and I mean a lot. The entire first half is pretty much everything you need to know for crocheting, so this is a very comprehensive guide. It even has lists of all the fancy stitches you can do,so if you have any question of what the heck the instructions are talking about, go back to the beginning and find it.

I haven't had a chance to actually do any of the projects in the book (it has to go back to the library soon), but the instructions and diagrams are e...more

I learned to crochet from this book. I tried and tried to learn from my mom, but this book taught me all about how to put my nose in the crotch and that it's ok to be a back door betty.

some of the patterns are fucking awesome, and a lot of them are really crappily written and hard to follow. some great ideas and a good collection of the basic info. i need to own this book

A good book for someone beginning crochet or someone a little bit advanced. Check the errata before starting any projects. It's riddled with mistakes.

I'm not much of a crocheter--I can crochet exactly as much as you need to be able to in order to be a fairly skilled knitter, and no more. I was hoping to be inspired to want to improve my skills by this book (as I was and am to improve my knitting by the Stitch 'N Bitch knitting books), but frankly I'm not. There are loads of lovely crochet patterns out there, but not in this book--as far as I'm concerned; obviously it's a highly individual issue. I just kept thinking how much better things wou...more

The best crochet book there is! The instructions are super clear - I don't know how Debbie Stoller managed to make what is quite a difficult subject to explain easy to understand, plus its humourous and there are loads of explanations of many of the types of stitches in crochet.

The book is split into two parts - a section on instructions and then a section of patterns. The only downside to me, if there is one, is that the patterns are not all to my taste, but the instructions in the first half...more

The main reason I bought this particular crochet book was that the patterns were mostly funky and modern. A lot of crochet patterns are stiff and just variations on granny squares. That's nice, if you want to make an afghan that will match your great-aunt's olive and burnt orange living room ensemble that she has remodeled since 1978.

I wanted quirky, sweet, and most of all, easy to follow patterns that I would actually wear out in public! (Fuzz bunny slippers excepted.)

Happily, I have finished a...more

This book is awesome. I was trying to teach myself crochet, and although I haven't mastered the technique this book did help out more than most books that I have read on crochet. It has beautiful patterns, step-by-step techniques on how to do every single crochet stitch there is. (Bubble, popcorn, and all the advanced techniques too). It tell you about yarn and how to pick the best one, how to choose the crochet hook that goes with the yarn. It is just an overall wonderful book and am glad to say...more

Except for the cover (which exerted too much effort for readership), I really learned a lot from this book. I like the instructions for a change. Too many crochet books sort of assume that you can read patterns like a pro or that a st (stitch) is so easy to distinguish from a sp (space) when a beginner can really get lost in the details. There are plenty of puns in this book, which is kinda fun, but I give points to it for the cute accessories that I can make from it (the Yeehaw hat is cute).

This was one of the first crochet books I ever owned. The beginning section that teaches you how to crochet was a big help and very easy to understand once I actually made myself read the entire explanation of each stitch instead of trying to figure it out on my own! The patterns are very cute and many are easy enough for someone just starting to learn crochet. I would definitely recommend this to any beginning hooker out there.
Beth Chandler
Stoller's "basics" chapters have the sort of detail you need in order to get things just right, such as where, exactly, to insert your hook in your chain stitch to do stitches properly. She's a bit too long-winded but otherwise I love her writing. Also, the crochet designs she's connected are fashionable but for the most part not so trendy they're outdated, and gorgeous!

I might buy this one for my crocheting collection.

One of the better crocheting books out there. As Debbie Stoller's books usually are, they're well written, entertaining, and feature fun patterns.

I'm exhibiting my needle-vs-hook bias here, but I haven't made anything from this book because I have a harder time loving the look of crochet. But that's not Stoller's fault--I bought this book anyway because she absolutely has the best shot at getting me over that bias!

I just got this for my oldest daughter who wants to learn how to crochet. I sat on the floor in the crafts and hobbies section of the bookstore for an hour looking through the beginning crochet books before settling on this one. It is incredibly easy to follow, and has fantastic, simple beginning designs. My daughter was able to crochet a beginning chain stitch and a single crochet right away.

This is an excellent example of what a craft book in general should be; it's clearly written and easy to understand without being patronizing, while still retaining a sense of humor to keep it from degenerating into a droning, textbookish monologue.

The illustrations are an added perk, and make it easier to understand just what the author is trying to say, which is a must when you're trying to figure out that tricky V-stitch, but they don't clutter the page too much.

The patterns are widely varied...more

Really helpful with some cute patterns in it! Definitely worth a read, especially the part about knitters vs. crochet-ers (I still don't get why the two don't care for one another, but whatever!). The patterns are fairly intricate and require a lot of time and yarn. I have aspirations to make a shrug or two, but the amount of money it would take to buy the yarn to make it is just too much for me! Oh, and I should note that MOST (not all) patterns have from small to x-large sizes as well.

Absolutely excellent for someone picking up crochet for the first time (or in a really, really long time). Terminology, patterns and persona are all quite modern and allow EASY understanding of every stitch. Perhaps the best crochet help book I have ever purchased. Well worth every penny with to-die-for patterns, and excellent pictorial helps along the way.

I actually read..yes.. I read the whole book a while ago. It was gifted to my through a swap, and is still one of the best gifts I've ever received.

I went through the book step by step (learned every stitch) and can now crochet pretty much anything I'd like.

I highly recommend it to those new to crochet or those that just want to freshen up on things.

I love this book! It contains great patterns with easy to follow instructions. All the different stitches are explained at the beginning of the book for easy reference. I've made so many great things from this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to crochet, and also to those who are looking for some fun and creative patterns.

I needed to expand my crocheting repertoire beyond the single stitch and this book is a fabulous resource and inspiration for new stitches and cool patterns to wear. Her knitting books are great as well. Overall, I like her spunk and departure from the dry orientation of many books in the yarn-work category.

This book is fantastic! If you like to crochet, you have to have this on your shelves. I've made several projects from this book, and loved them all. I already was a pretty good crocheter, so I don't know how this book would work for a beginner (seems like it would be great, but I can't vouch for that).

Not a bad book.I didn't look at the how to section because I already know how to crochet.I made the In Bloom purse and I made a purse out of the skull potholders by using the strap from the Orange You Glad bag.I also made one bird pin but the instructions were so confusing that I couldn't make another.
