More than a book, this is a course that takes you through journaling activities based on Book of Mormon verses and principles from the 12 step programs that reinforce eachother. I would not have considered myself a compulsive or addicted person, but this book showed me how simply by being human, with natural-man tendencies, I and all other humans are fallen and have problems that we can't overcome on our own, and we are in need of the same help from the Lord that an alcoholic would be. It also...more

This book is literally a God-send...Colleen Harrison's willingness to be so open about her personal struggles and subsequent journey through the repentance process and toward God gives hopes even to those who see themselves as "the most lost of all mankind." The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints used this as an unofficial manual for the church-sponsored addiction recovery program until it published its own church-approved manual in 2006. Though a few of her arguments overstep...more

This book can not only be the twelve step program but for ANYTHING. It is a book about a woman who struggles with an addiction to an eating disorder, she talks about the hardships she has to over come. I guess anything we over do can become an addiction, whether it be from too much time on the email/blog *jk*, eating disorders, or really any real hard addiction. The 12 step program is really the repentance process and what a beautiful thing it is. I hope to one day be able to serve a mission in ...more

Some books I read again because I love them, some I read because I NEED them.
I initially read this book to help me understand what a loved one was going through. I learned that we all have "addictions" to overcome. The scriptures call them “the natural man.” Whether we struggle with impatience, intolerance, self-criticism, over-spending, pride, selfishness, laziness, crankiness, over-eating, procrastination, self-centeredness, cruelty, whatever, we can't overcome it on our o...more

Wow, I never truly understood the atonement and how to make it work in your own life until I read this book.
This book takes the 12 steps of Alcoholics Annymous and scriptures from the Book of Mormon.
To really understand this book you must do all the assignments. It is a little bit frightening to do so as it has you look into your past, but it is truly freeing if you have the courage to go there.

Replace the work "addiction" with "weakness" or "natural man behavior" and you've got an incredible manual for applying the atonement in your life, whether or not you suffer from "socially unacceptable addictions". This book really rekindled my testimony of Christ and the Book of Mormon, helped me understand prayer better, and overall boosted my personal spirituality up a few notches. Highly recommended.

This changed my life. If you have hit rock bottom with ANY circumstance (doesn't need to be an addiction), this book will give you hope, healing and another chance at life. I strongly feel that the twelve-steps are the only way back to Christ or a higher power. I also love that the author has incorporated the Book of Mormon into this book which I feel compliments the twelve-steps.

This is best read with a group of people. Doing weekly discussions. The book is a 12-week program, in which there is extra reading, journaling and assignments. You can do it on your own, but it usually stirs up such strong emotions and deep thoughts that one yearns to share.

An absolutely life altering book. It applies to those dealing with addictions, both directly and indirectly, and to everyone else. Anyone willing to read this, write their feelings and look up some scriptures will find a tool that takes their hand and walks them closer to the Savior. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I'm in the process of reading this. Its one of those books where you read and you have to do something before you can move on. I don't think I necessarily have any type of addiction but I am open to things, books, etc that will help me be a better person.

This book is a must read. It really taught me that I can overcome anything with Christ and that I have a lot more to overcome than I thought. I learned that anything we can fix on our own is an addiction to something, and Christ can help us overcome it.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this book if you want to overcome a compulsive, addictive behavior (like overeating), or just want to understand the Book of Mormon better, or want to draw closer to the Lord!!! It will help you do all three.

Revolutionary when she wrote it, this book has been adapted by the LDS church for use in Family Services. I realized a while ago that the 12 steps were the same as the gospel of Jesus Christ, and Colleen has made specific connections.

This book's focus is to help readers come to Christ. It does a good job of reminding us that everything else in religion is only good insomuch as it draws us to Him; and really makes you think about your relationship with Deity.

The most influential book I read in the past year. Through studying this book and the Book of Mormon I gained a knowledge of Christ as my personal Savior in a way I had never felt before.

Very good workbook for anyone who struggles with addiction in any form. I would recommend it to nearly everyone because we all have issues that we need to get under control.

A very interesting read and good insight to those that have addictions. Written as a workbook like the twelve step program for AA. Recommend to those of the LDS faith.
