I grew up listening to Warren Zevon, bought all his records when they came out, and saw him live several times throughout his career. He is one of my favorite performers. Personal information about Warren was always hard to come by. I knew he had a legendary drinking problem back in the 70's/early 80's and he spent a lot of time getting on the wagon and falling off again. Rarely were there any specifics. This book gets specific about nearly all phases of his life and kind of beats you over th...more

I love Warren Zevon. I think he's just the best. Even when he was alive, his voice sounded kind of like how a ghost might sing - all wiggly and sad and weird and funny. Though he undoubtedly would have been fun to have a drink or two with, I feel bad for the people who had to spend any significant amount of time with him, since, as this biography, not to mention his own lyrics, will often attest, the guy behaved like a drunken asshole most of the time. I simply do not care. He never did any...more

I checked this book out from the library after pianist Michael Wolff mentioned that he had been interviewed for it. I was a huge fan of Zevon's work in the 80s but kind of lost track after a while. After picking up "Mutineer" and "Life'll Kill Ya" on Wolff's suggestion, I kicked myself for not staying on the bandwagon.

That said, this book presents a most compelling picture of Zevon's life. Well, maybe "compelling" isn't quite the right word. It's like a car cras...more

I began this book with a prejudice going both ways. I am a huge fan of his music and was excited to find out more about who he was, but my brother, also a fan, sent me the book after reading it himself and said that he had a hard time enjoying the music now after reading about what a mean, abusive maniac this man could be. So i turned the first page with a small amount of fear that my pedestal for this musical genius would be destroyed. In all honesty he had a large number of faults and dealt wi...more

I would have given this book four stars - I'm a big Warren Zevon fan, and it was well-written - but frankly this book depressed the living hell out of me. Zevon was a train wreck all his life. I remembered reading an interview with him in Rolling Stone years back about how he quit a bad drinking habit (two bottles of vodka, straight, every day), but this book shows his other excesses never really left him. He had tons of very close friends, but for some reason he sabotaged many of his friends...more

The story of Zevon is fierce, sad, scary, and admirable. Like the subject matter, the book is flawed yet brilliant as well. Crystal Zevon provides wonderful compilation, although her unique filter of Warren Zevon's life can be and bad.

She gives insights no other person could give, but her separation from Warren Zevon in the later half of his life might robs the sober Warren years from some sympathy he may have been due.

Interesting parts abound with descriptions of how music gets crea...more

What I learned: That Warren Zevon was a very troubled but astonishing gifted artist. (Okay, I already knew that.) This is a fascinating and intimate account of the life of a brilliant songwriter whose talent was unfortunately tempered with a host of problems - drinking, drugs, obsessive compulsive disorder and finally, cancer. The author was married to Zevon at the beginning of his career and remained a loyal friend for most of his later years, so she knows her subject well and doesn't shy away ...more

Warren Zevon's former wife and lifelong friend has interviewed I think 86 of Mr. Zevon's friends, family and associates in the music business (and has contributed her own stories)and has skillfully woven these stories into a compelling biography of her famously exuberant husband. Ms. Zevon demonstrates that she is an artist in her own right with this work describing the life and times of the excitable boy, whose bleak childhood might provide a place to begin to understand some of his later ecce...more

Liked the book quite a bit, tho it's always disconcerting to learn that one of your favorite artists was a coke snorting, heroin shooting, wife beating, child ignoring assholes. But a good read none the less. I like Oral biographies and this one struck the right tone, honest without being too catty, nostalgic but realistic, and observant of the artists personal life while never forgetting the music is why we like the guy in the first place.

Not quiet on the level of something like Please Kil...more

THis book is written in the same style as Please Kill Me, i.e. biographical account of W.Z., as told by all those around Zevon, including his wife, children and musician friends. It's a mixture of a rock n' roll bio and the worst fucked up shit one could come accross in the tabloids and it moves quick.

All I will say about the man himself is he was very afflicted with Alcohol, OCD, and Sex addictions among others and when you mix those together with a real genius you get something pretty exp...more

I loved Warren's music - enough so that I actually lasted to the end of this tortured accounting of his life. A truly loathsome father and despicable husband, Warren's tale is important only in that it underscores everything you feared a life of addiction would lead to. A difficult book to read on every level.

The most poignant line comes from his son Jordan: "No one with a decent circle of friends could have gotten away with what my dad got away with". Nothing more need be sai

Warren was an A$$hole. Boy was he ever. But he was loved by many. A very blunt oral biography of the late musician reveals many thing syou may not want to know about the singer/songwriter. Told by his former lovers, bandmembers and friends, it's really hard to put down. Zevon's penchant for self-destruction is well documented and it left me wondering how he didn't die sooner, or take someone out with him before - maybe we'll never know about that...

A lot of wild stories along with some ugliness -- Zevon was a severe alcoholic. He was also just sort of a freak. And a genius. I found myself singing his songs all while reading this.

It's not something I'd recommend to anyone but a Zevon fan, but it's an intriguing peek into an era and one of the most unique and creative songwriters and performers of rock and roll.

This book was totally amazing. It's not a biography, exactly, it's done like an oral history with little snippets from all sorts of folks that knew the Exciteable Boy, and good god, tough to believe much of it. I reviewed it for the Indy, which you can read here: http://www.independent.com/new...

I didn't know much about Warren Zevon or his music and still this book was interesting. Made up of his own journals and interviews with a lifetime of friends and musicians and authors (Springsteen, Stephen King, Jackson Brown) you feel you get the true 360 degree life of this man, unlike many biographies.

Let me save you the trouble of reading this little missive: Warren gets drunk. Warren does something incredibly stupid and hurts someone very close to him. Warren responds with a sh*t-eating grin and a shrug.

Repeat over and over until he dies. The end.

Everything you ever wanted to know about WZ but were afraid to ask, or things you didn't want to know but are still, um, interesting. Described by the Onion AV Club as "aimed squarely at cultists and fanatics," probably accurately. But if you felt that description, absolutely check it out.

I have always loved warren zevon. I loved reading about his life and the history behind all of the songs he has written. He really led a tortured life and he managed to torture the ones he loved. He was a character, and it makes it all the more interesting to listen to his songs now.

I've always thought Zevon was about the most literate lyricist and competent composer in popular music. You may finish this book wishing you knew less than now know about this bizarre genius, but you'll also want to listen to every song again now that you know the backstory.

Still taking chances (posthumously now), Warren demands that they tell all upon his departure due to lung cancer (the kind that steve mcqueen died of!). This leaves us Zevon fans with a totally unflattering portrayal of our hero. Which, as Zevon fans know, is just perfect.
