Disappointing: I really enjoyed the first the three books of the Catteni sequence and was looking forward to this one, but was disappointed.

For much of the book it seemed that I was reading about a completely different set of characters as everyone seemed to have had their personality sucked out. The pioneering ethic was not necessary any longer I suppose, but that spirit had defined the characters for me and I felt they were pretty thin (and unsympathetic) without it. I also found the shift to

As always, I enjoy Anne Mccaffrey stories. I normally don't do, survivor tales. But she weaves the story well so that when some of the characters get into vicious mode because of the situation, she balances it out with strong and light hearted characters to keep the story from turning into the harshness of survival.

Her stories are always easy reads, but entertaining.

PLus I love the relationship between Zainal and Chris. I just didn't like how she ended up with children....more

Everyone knows how sad it is to realize that your favorite series has jumped the shark. There's always that let-down when you finish a novel, add it to your stack of previous entries, and suddenly feel that you can't remember a single thing you just read. And if it's bad when it happens to a good series, it's even worse when it happens to one that's only 'okay'.

The Freedom trilogy worked fairly well. It appropriately used the science fiction background of isolated planets and wild inte...more

While I do appreciate the fact that at no point in this book did Kris get herself drunk and knocked up by someone other than her partner, I nevertheless wonder why McCaffrey wrote this book. Freedom's Challenge ended with an openness that certainly made another sequel possible, but it also seemed like a decent place to just stop. Failing that, though, she really ought to have found something interesting to write about if she really wanted to stick with these characters. This book consisted almos...more

Last in the series...I don't think I liked this one as much as the others the first time around, so we'll see...

Yep, glad to be done. Enjoyable enough to finish, but I don't think I'll want to reread the series again (obviously, I liked it enough the FIRST time to reread it once...). My conclusions on the series are that it was not well edited--too many characters swap names or parts of names and details are often changed or repeated. However, the PREMISE is compelling enough, and th...more

I am a definite fan of coffee. However, too much of the book is dedicated to coffee. This feels like an extra unnecessary portion of the series. There was good closure after the third book so I was really surprised to see a fourth. Of course i had to read it but I wasn't overly impressed. It wasn't bad per se, not exactly good either. There wasn't much character deveolpment and certainly not much action There seemed to be some forced moments of action but they felt forced and were resolv...more

This is not one of Anne McCaffrey's better books. It felt like the plot was all over the place. Space that could have been devoted to developing the characters was instead given over to detailed descriptions of dentistry practices and coffee varieties. Many of the supporting characters who had been interesting and complex are now just names mentioned with no context, given flat lines that could have come from anyone. It was difficult to keep all the secondary characters straight (or muster up th...more

ARGH.
Except for characters that happen to have the same name, this really isn't a part of the series. Everything that was good about this books was just simply deleted or ignored. There's not ONE MENTION of the Deski or Rugs. It's as if no aliens except for the Catteni have ever existed.

I really don't get it. Further more, this book seems rather unfinished business, and if you want a conlusion to the series, the previous book works way better.

A bitter disappointmen...more

This is one of the most disappointing novels I can think of by Anne McCaffery. It takes a decent scifi adventure series, where they overcome a good deal of adversity and chaos...And turn it into a book where the entire plot is setting up a space starbucks. And using coffee...to buy back stolen goods from the thieves, who have no use for the hardware in question.

If this novel was written as depressingly as it feels for me, it should be in Russian.

Out of the hwold series this book was my favorite. I know a lot believe it was the worst in the series, but for me it was a better read than the others in the series. The aftermath of the prior books this one focuses on the leftovers after war, and brought a rather different presence to the story which I liked better.

Having thrown off the yolk of the Catteni, the people of Botany attempt to establish trade with Eartd and Barevi. Kris and her Catteni mate Zainal also try to find the locations of other planets where Earth disetants have been ddropped.

They have thought they were done fighting for freedom but found that they have to save the universe through ransom and finding something of value to the opressive society that wants to rule the universe.

This was my favorite of the series...I really got into all the post-intergalactic imprerialism trading (that sounds really nerdy, but it was interesting).

What happens after the diverse settlers of Botany succeed in their revolution? They become obsessed with coffee.

I thought it was all over in book 3. Zainal comes back into book 4 and it's even more fun. We get to learn how they try to help Earth and what other things they do to make Botany a home. Just thinking about this books brings a smile to my face. Here's why.

1. Never give up attitude
2. Working together towards a positive outcome
3. Everyone can contribute to make their world a better place.
4. Ingenuity and troubleshooting skills

I just loved how they were able t...more

While I enjoyed the story, I came to really detest half the characters. I loved the return to Earth and Barevi and the struggles to establish trade for Botany and those two planets, but when the book starts out by thanking someone for proofreading it all, I think it should look like it was proofread. One of the big bloopers was confusion of the species of two characters. It was finally fixed about 2/3 of the way through the book, but too late for my liking.

Recommends it for: anyone who likes scifi
The book was good but it seems like it was a set up for the next one and there is no next one :(

This series was never as good as its first book and this volume was a microcosm of the whole series. Okay science fiction. Not sure I read any more MCCaffrey after this work.

I really don't remember where this story went without looking it up, but I'm just partial to everything she's written.

Anne McCaffrey was born on April 1st, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 1:30 p.m., in the hour of the Sheep, year of the Fire Tiger, sun sign Aries with Taurus rising and Leo mid-heaven (which seems to suggest an early interest in the stars).

Her parents were George Herbert McCaffrey, BA, MA PhD (Harvard), Colonel USA Army (retired), and Anne Dorothy McElroy McCaffrey, estate agent....more
