I'd never heard of Wolfgang Borchert until about a week before Christmas when a European Couple in their twenties came into the store and were asking for books by Ingeborg Bachmann, Max Frisch and a couple of other authors that I like and who are sort of obscure. They then asked for The Man Outside, a book by an author I'd never heard of, but going by the worn torn cover, the German name and that these two young Europeans seemed to have some similar reading tastes as me, I ordered the book in to ...more

Helmet off helmet off – we have lost!

Wolfgang Borchert was one of millions of Germans who fought in WWII. Not for Hitler, for national socialism, or for Germany; for Germany, he'd written plays against the nazis, which earned him a one-way trip to the front (it's easier to have your enemies take care of dissidents).

When he came back home, the war was over, Hitler was dead and Wolfgang himself wasn't far behind. Four years of bullet wounds (some allegedly self-inflected), field hospitals, sicknes

I considered giving this 4 stars due to some unevenness, but the best stories of the day here are legitimate classics with an original style and energy that kept one of my eyes on the page while the other navigated ice, Philadelphia "citizenry," and large buses.

Without going too biographical, Borchert had a longstanding battle with the Gestapo and was dragged into active service by the Wehrmacht and placed on Germany's Eastern front during WWII. Conscription, prison, war, and hepatitis killed h

"There's a man playing the xylophone. He plays incredibly fast. And he sweats, this man, because he's extraordinarily fat. And this xylophone's gigantic. And because it's so big he has to dash up and down with every stroke. And he sweats, because he's really very fat. But it

incredibly powerful and depressing play on a veteran's psychological despair after his return home. regardless of the war and site (here it's wwII in germany), a book that's relevant in any country and year.

This book moved me tremendously, as it summed up exactly how i think of war and the fact that you give away your conscience when you enter into the army, from there on doing the bidding of your officers and in the end the current political party leading the government, notwithstanding what you think of the actions you have to take.
Unfortunately it is not possible yet to have a world without armies, but borchert shows in this book very well what this can lead to and that the ones that have to pay

This is one of the most important books I've ever read. It's tragically beautiful and recounts what life was like for East Germans directly after World War II.

Wolfgang Borchert and, particularly, Draußen vor der Tür, really touched me. DVDT was my first ever book read in german. From cover to cover, I mean. I had to read it for german literature class, and I thought it would be hard and dense. It is dense, but the way Borchert writes, the strength of the characters, the powerful dialogues, it all moved me, and made the whole reading experience easier (in terms of language, of course. The theme is something else). The story is set after the second worl ...more

The feeling that you want to call your favorite author right after one's read the book arose in me, i read it twice in one night and it has become my absolutely favorite book.

As I had to read this book for college, I thought I would hate it, because it's a rare thing when teachers make their students read enjoyable books.
My expectations were really low and I wasn't looking forward to reading it, but when I finally started, I found myself enjoying it a lot.
I can't quite say what was it that made me like this book so much, just that I did and that then it was super easy to learn all the things we were being taught in class.
It's such an easy (though "different") and qu

Ia mening

My favourite book of all time. 'Ein Mann kommt nach Deutschland.' Borchert is a huge talent, a stunning voice of German opposition amidst the horrors of the Third Reich. This is a soldier conscript writing compulsively in stark, simple sentences to anyone who could read that war is evil. I read it first for my A levels, then again for my degree and twenty five years and many books later, it is still number one. If you like this, read Lesebuchgechichten. I think they made a film of the play, call ...more

This was a wonderful discovery, I found it in a pile of books someone was throwing away. The short pieces here cover an assortment of styles, some were quite beat/lyrical like Leroy Jones' early short fiction and others were hung along an almost gothic (the play in particular) anti-war line while other pieces were clearly influenced by Alfred Doblin. Very youthful and deeply passionate writing. Topical and important to this day... this book is a must for any reader concerned with the social and ...more
Draussen vor der Tür is a play, a powerful outcry of anger against the war and people who do not take responsibility for it and who would rather ignore anyone who comes home broken by it, like the main character of the play. The book also contains a number of very short stories and prose pieces, including "Das Brot" and "Dann gibt es nur eins!" (which I read so many times when I first encountered it that I almost learned it by heart). There is also a very eloquent afterword by Heinrich Böll.

Life! My God, what is it: Remembering scents, grasping at door-handles. You walk past faces and at night feel the rain in your hair. And that’s doing quite well. Then behind them a locomotive cried out like a giant child utterly homesick. And it made the night into night. Then a freight train rattled harshly past the men. And it snarled like danger through the silken, star-studded night. The men breathed sturdily against it.
This play illustrates the conflict of German soldiers returning from the Second World War and having to reintegrate themselves into a society in which they are not wanted. They are a relic of the past, people want to forget about. Common reoccurring themes are the suicidal tendencies of these former soldiers (survived a war but could not deal with reality), inability to deal with the guilt and contrast between the old and new society in Germany.
