This manga speaks to me. I am in a middle of a career change, I am teaching college students after escaping the daily grind of an 8 to 5 career. I can relate to Onizuka, who had a hard time earning the respect of his students. When I started teaching I already have an idea of how the "Great Teacher Onizuka" would do it. So its a great help.

Onizuka teaches his student that academics are not everything, they are important, but of equal standing are friends, honor and just enjoying life. He is a re

Man this got to be one of the most touching shounen I ever read. Reading this was really refreshing, possibly from the "old school" feeling of it all. Beside having a really great and funny storyline (yes I cant remember how many time I laugh when I saw Onizuka stupid act), you get to understand and learn from it as well, alot of great lesson is filled within this show. Beside those, character are really well develop and usually leave a memorable though within viewer. I highly recommend this ser ...more

GTO is an interesting read for me on several levels since I teach in college. I was older than Onizuka when I started teaching and I certainly had different motivations than him and yet, I can still appreciate what he goes through, especially whenever he triumphs and helps students learn something important. That is one of the more gratifying things I've experienced in my life.

From reading the reviews here on Goodreads, it seems like a lot of female readers find Onizuka repulsive and a bit of a

Meet Eikichi Onizuka--the twenty-two year old, ex-leader of a motorcycle gang, the graduate of a fifth-rate college, someone who hasn't made much of his life so far. Now he finds himself job-hunting, racking up rejection after rejection. It looks hopeless, until he comes across a high school girl, upset over a fight with her boyfriend. He offers to show her a good time, but during karaoke, her boyfriend shows up. She leaps into the much older, bald guy's arms, calling him 'teacher.' This gives E ...more

This manga is very entertaining, but also very moving and insightful. Some may describe it as sexist, but whilst it may not be politically correct this is a really good read and the main character despite being interested in sex (like most young men his age), really cares about his students and treats them fairly. He's the sort of teacher who makes a huge positive impact on his students. If you enjoy the manga there is also an anime of this, which is also really good.

I love the gto series, at first I thought that it was bad and just preverted, but I've relied that he's just like every other man with his weird fantasies. It rude, crude, and very lewd. Onizuka is the man. the whole series get better every book. so if u didn't like this book, then try reading the second volume. If you don't like the second volume, then don't read anymore. this book is awesome, and I totally recomend it.

Onizuka, young 20s man who is the leader of his gang. His dream? To become a high school teacher so he can hook up with female students. Yes he is a perv, but he does get into a lot of trouble with his students. You'll be laughing to the end.

Despite its violent and so-called "bad manner" content, GTO is an inspiring, entertaining yet meaningful comic for those who have experienced the life of high school. Highly recommended!

A good manga with a morale: never let go of the teenager in you! never lose that perspective on life that we all had throughout our teens before we joined adult life...

School comedies became a trend after the success of Urusei Yatsura in the mid 80’s. Many others tried to repeat the success but none managed to get to the same heights, mostly because all that followed had less to offer. Less likable characters, less context, less things to ponder about. All that changed when GTO came to be and proved how even a school comedy can be educational and entertaining at the same time. This is the story of Onizuka, an ex-gang member who decides to become a teacher most ...more

GTO is about a man named Eikichi Onizuka. He is a 22 year old pervert and virgin who wants to be a teacher. Therefore, he signed up as a teacher's volunteer and the kids he worked with tried to set him up and make it seem like he was molesting a girl in the class. This failed however, due to the fact Eikichi was a leader of a motorcycle gang and a black belt martial artist, forcing the students to get beat up and the class to completely obey him. However, Eikichi missed the teachers exam and cou ...more

The first volume of GTO tells the story of Onizuka, a 22 year old biker who wants to be a teacher. At first it seems that he wants the job just so he can get with hot high school girls, but there seems to be a more to him than that. While Onizuka is a creepy pervert, he's much like a pervert with a heart of gold. In order to become a teacher, he has a lot of challenges in front of him.

The artwork for this volume is amazingly inconsistent. There are many panels that are filled stunning details,

I know this is a popular series for more mature reading, but it just didn't do anything for me. Eikichi Onizuka is a 22-year old hellraiser that gets drawn to the profession of high school teacher mainly because he wants to have young teenage girls fawning over him and helping him lose his virginity. Yuck. Of course, as he deals with the bullies, etc. that populate the school you start to get a deeper view of Eikichi the person who is willing to stand up for his students and help them out of som ...more

Ugh. The style is tough to look at for too long and the storyline is gross and misogynistic. It leaves you feeling gypped and uncomfortable.

Eikichi Onizuka (22), old virgin and ex-biker. crude, foul-mouthed, and very temperament.
He has a dream to be the Greatest High School Teacher in the World!!! but the thing behind that great dream is to score with the hot students ^_^"
Onizuka may think he’s the toughest guy on school, but when he meets his class full of bullies, blackmailers, and scheming sadists .... huwaaa. Honestly, I'm not really like this book. But there is available in Dorama, and the dorama is more interesting to watch.

I'd need to be very, very, very careful deciding whether or not to put this on my shelf, especially if I end up in a middle school (high school is more "anything goes"). There isn't really nudity, but there's definitely some perversions going on. Somehow, there's more trouble with graphic depictions than written descriptions...strange. Anyway, it's still a great series, so :P to all the whiners.

4/5 on here, 8/10 for myself

Suka banget ma ni buka lucu, kocak, sedih, seru semuanya digabung jadi satu biarpun namanya great teacher onizuka tapi tingkah lakunya gak mirip kayak guru (ya iyalah mantan kepala preman gitu lho) tapi punya semangat bagus untuk menjadikan sekolah fun. FYI ajah neh ini komik udah dapat penghargaan udah dibuat dorama (pernah dipasang di indosiar, tapi mending baca bukunya deh) udah dijadiin film jg.. gak nyesel deh baca ini buku :P

Well, I kept this manga series for a later time and I really thought I'd enjoy it because I liked the idea of a teacher who's 'supposedly' humorous but I didn't like not even a bit and I was wrong the teacher isn't humorous, he's just an idiot + pervy.
The art also turned me off because most characters' expressions were ugly.
Bottom line: just not what I expected.

it's marvelous & funny story about school!
although contains sexual & nudity content, still entertaining & makes us more laugh&laugh xDxDxD.
i'm not agree if this manga called hard-porn because the important point is not about the nudity but moral lesson about togetherness of share each other.(but, you don't be sad because in the end, teacher onizuka is dead!:()

Ex-biker Eikichi Onizuka decides to become a teacher so he can get with schoolgirls. Overall, a little too skeezy for my taste, although I guess as the series unfolds he learns he really likes teaching and can't bring himself to take advantage of his female students (although their mothers are another matter entirely.)

This was the first manga I ever read so I'm still getting used to how it reads and what some of the techniques are supposed to mean. I didn't love this but I liked it well enough to try a few more volumes. The only real irksome thing is how small some of the print gets. I can barely make it out.

I great comedy series about biker gang leader-turned teacher! At first, he's just in it to get a young wife, but he ends up helping a lot of kids. This is a long series that I'm still working on, but it has lots of different plots within the main one that definitely keeps you hooked.

I've actually read vols. 1-6 so far, but thought I'd include them all in one review. I love 'em - was cackling throughout. If you've ever taught at a Japanese high school a lot of it will strike a chord...yes, it's comic book exaggeration, but not by too much. All hail GTO!

I saw the anime years ago and found the manga in my local library. Wow, the anime clearly followed the manga almost panel by panel. The story is great, the characters are unforgettable, and the art is detailed. Love it.

Eikichi Onizuka, 22 ans, puceau, devient professeur. Son objectif : pouvoir se taper des lycéennes. Mais derrière ça, l'auteur dresse une sévère critique du système scolaire et éducatif nippon.
Surprenant et hilarant...

Huh. I was so confident that I'd like it that I bought the whole set at Book Off. But it left me feeling gross and kind of depressed. Maybe it's too over-the-top for my taste. I did like the TV series.

A series that didn't appeal to me that much. I can understand why some people swear up and down it's fantastic, but I didn't really connect to the characters nor did I care much for the art.
