Personally loved this book and the message it gives! It discusses the anxiety of a new place, new toys, new friends but reminds Llama that "Mama always comes back." Although it's directed towards pre-preschoolers I believe that it could also be used as a book to read to your child before he or she starts kindergarten too. The shy, but brave Llama goes off to school, along with all different types of animals dressed in their new school clothes. At first Llama is unhappy about having to leave his...more

Llama Llama is a well-loved character that undergoes many of the challenges that children who read about him do. In "Llama Llama Misses Mama", little llama begins school, and isn't so sure about him having to stay, and Mama leaving. He goes throughout his day refusing to play with the other kids, listen to stories, or even eat his lunch. Llama Llama misses his Mama while he is at school. However, the story takes a new turn when the other kids at school ask the llama to play, and his teacher reas...more

He is shy, wants to be left alone, and misses his mommy. He does not want to eat or listen or play with the other children. He cries a little because he misses his mommy. His teacher reassures little llama that his mother will be coming back for him.

After lunch the kids invite him to check out the toys and the playground. They show him...more

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney is about a little llama who is starting his first day of school. He wakes up, makes his bed, eats breakfast and heads off to school. His mother leaves him there and he is very sad and he misses her. However, after his teacher explains that his mother will be back to get him and his peers tell him not to be sad, llama starts to have fun and enjoy school. When his mother arrives he is very excited to see her and show her everything he did that day. When they...more

The Llama, Llama books follow a very set format - something happens, the llama gets more and more frustrated, the llama throws a tantrum, and the grown-ups help fix things. Except this time he doesn't have a tantrum (he's growing up, clearly), he just starts to cry.

The author is very good at presenting children's emotions. You can see him getting more and more upset as the day goes on, including the famous "Llama Llama HATES that book" line. Perfectly accurate - when have you ever heard a cranky...more

Llama goes to school for the first time. He finds himself really upset when his mother has to leave. Llama doesn't know what to do with all the new people and the new classroom. At first Llama doesn't want to play or do anything with anybody else. After awhile, Llama starts to relax and begins to participate and play with the other children. Time passes and Mama Llama returns to pick up Llama. In the end, Llama realizes that he loves his mom and school too.

This book is intended for preschool and...more

Such a sweet story... baby llama with his own baby llama 'teddy bear' type snuggler. It is his first day of preschool, and little llama misses his mama terribly. It is right on, as far as the ups and downs of separation, and the rhyming makes it fun for even the littlest listener. The illustrations are surprisingly perfect, in their depiction of emotion on the tiny llama face, and the clear softness is reminiscent of water color art but with a vibrancy most water colors miss.

I hadn't read any o...more

This is adoring book to read to preschooler. To bring a story to children in head start to them interested in each other as friends. At first, mother Llama left him in the daycare, but little llama was shy to play along with other children. Until the little llama was crying to be with his mother after she left her in daycare. Llama was angry that his mother left him. So, he didn't want to be part of this daycare. Llama hated to read books. Llama was not comfortable being there with no friends. T...more

A story that is paced well and written to read out loud.

The story is about a little llama named in the title and his first day at preschool. The story is remarkably accurate to life starting with mama llama running late, llama llama getting nervous and sad at the beginning of the day and gradually warming up to a zebra teacher. Mama llama returns at the end of the day and llama llama is thrilled.

The book is rhymed and has a fun rhythm that makes me smile when I read it to my little guy. The ill...more

This book is about little Llama on his first day of school. he starts the day off being sad and missing his mama. He is shy and wont do anything, but sit and ponder and be sad. He doesn't understand why she had to go and if she is gone forever. By the end of the day Llama has makes new friends and learns how much fun school can be! This is a great book for teaching about the first day of school and the schedule of what will be going on that day. Also, if any child is having problems with seperat...more

I was a little disappointed by this book, but not for a fair reason. When the librarian was handing out books at the end of story time, I thought this one would be great for us since Natalie liked Llama Llama Red Pajama and she has separation anxiety. But, it turns out this was really a going to school book. And while poor, sad llama is endearing, I was more looking for a llama freak out like in the first book that was more like Natalie. I also thought more time would be spent on llama's feeling...more

This book would be a wonderful book to have in the classroom library and available for students at the beginning of a new school year in a younger classroom; probably around preschool to kindergarten age. The message within the book revolves around the llama growing up and having to go to school. When mama llama leave her child at school, llama begins to feel a little lonely. However, with reassurance that mama would be coming back, llama begins to play and have fun at school. When mama comes to...more

Little Llama is off to preschool for the first time. An exciting, yet upsetting event. He doesn't want to play with anyone or do anything other than go home. In time, Llama warms to his classmates and forgets all about being sad and lonely. It may be a good book to introduce a child to the idea of starting school or a new daycare. The actions of Llama's classmates also do a nice job showing empathy, something children learn by example (so all examples are welcome).

I believe this is the third boo...more

This is a book I picked up on a whim with several others at the library one day, and was so pleasantly surprised when Hinton and I read it at home. (And read it and read it. He asks for it every night.) It is about Llama Llama's first day of preschool and how he is, at first, sad and lonely. The first couple times we read the book Hinton was tense - I could tell he was feeling the stress of Llama Llama's first day too. Now, he is more relaxed when we read it and cheers when the other kids eventu...more

How many things rhyme with llama? A lot. Like a LOT lot. Or maybe not a lot, but enough for a whole series. In this one, Llama goes to school and (wait for it) misses mama. Unsurprisingly, he gets over his sadness and starts to enjoy being at school.

Perhaps more importantly, though, I read this book online for free at www.wegivebooks.org -- We Give Books is an organization (created by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation) that allows you to read a book online and click to DONATE A BOOK F...more

In this sweet book, perfect for the preschool child, Llama, Llama Misses Mama demonstrates that the first day of school can be traumatic for even a llama. The shy, but brave Llama goes off to school, along with all different types of animals dressed in their new school clothes. At first Llama is unhappy about having to leave his mama, but soon he is encouraged by the other animals to join in the fun activities at school, playing with the other animals.

The story is told in delightful rhyme, the i...more

I adore the Llama, Llama series by Anna Dewdney. The first LLama book is titled LLama, Llama Red Pajama. This book is the second in the collection and tells the story of young Llama who is preparing for and attending his first day of school. Despite all of the exciting new toys and friends to be made young Llama feels alone and scared. With some encouragement from his zebra teacher and his classmates Llama begins to enjoy his day is excited to show his mama when she returns. Written in a lively,...more

The Llama Llama books are currently Nadia's favorite. And this one, especially, is her favorite favorite. We read it every night and have done for weeks now. It's also my favorite because the first time we read it, Nadia felt so badly for little llama that she kissed him on the page when he was crying. And then - and she does this EVERY time we read it - when we get to the "Mama llama, you came back!!!!" part, she gets really excited and turns around and hugs me. <3 I think this book helped h...more

I had hoped that this would be about Mama Llama taking a business trip. The cover suggests such an interpretation, with poor little Llama Llama staring out the window waiting for Mama to return. However, LLAMA LLAMA MISSES MAMA is not about Mama leaving for an overnight trip, but rather about Llama Llama's first day at school, and how he feels abandoned and alone thinking that Mama has just left him, and how excited he is when he realizes that she has come back to pick him up. This is not overly...more

Llama Llama Misses Mama is a great book to read to a class. I read this book to my practicum Kindergarten class and they loved it. A lot of them have already heard the story, but they still enjoyed listening and looking at the pictures. This book is about how Llama has his first day of preschool and he is sad because he misses his mama. It takes the whole story for him to become comfortable with is teacher and class but once he does, he loves school. This is a great book to read to a younger cla...more

This book is about a young llama's first day at school. It covers all the same emotions many students feel when attending school for the first time or just coming back from the summer. The book does a great job of relating to students about what it's like to have new experiences at a young age and the upside of overcoming those first day school fears.

I think that this would be appropriate for all elementary grade levels and could be read to them on the first day of class. It would be a great co...more

Llama Llama Misses Mama is all about little llama and his first day at school. Mama llama wakes little llama and prepares him for school. Together they get dressed, brush their teeth, eat breakfast, and drive to school. Little llama meets his teacher and all the new faces. He says good-bye to his mama, and then sits in the corner. Friends from all over the classroom invite little llama to play, but little llama just keeps his distance. Poor little llama doesn't even want to eat his lunch he miss...more

We love all the Llama Series but this one is great because my little sister Princess Frostine was really scared about mom when she would leave her in nursery at church. Llama Llama misses mama was a wonderful way for her to know that mama always comes back. We enjoyed the pictures in this book. I also don't know of many other books that have a Llama as a main character so having a different kind of animal other than the normal bear or elephant really captures young readers attention! We loved th...more

This one gets chosen over and over again. Actually, all the Llama llama books we have are well-loved. It is the first day of school for Llama llama and he is pretty uncertain about being in the classroom. By snack time, he breaks down and cries. But, Mama llama is soon there to pick him up. Everything is better now and Llama llama even gets mama llama to try out the playhouse! My kids love the look of uncertainty and shyness and also relate to how they miss me sometimes while they are in prescho...more

I just can't get enough of these Llama Llama books...I am giddy every time after I read one!! The playful rhyming keeps you guessing of what is going to happen next. This book would be great to read to students who are in preschool or kindergarten on their first day of school to remind them, that their mama is going to come back and pick them up! The drawings are great, and would be excellent to go through and ask the children what types of animals are in the book! The title page illustration se...more

This book is about Llam who is excited about going to preschool for the first time, until he sees that his momma has to leave and is not staying there with him. Llama begins to cry and not like preschool anymore until his classmates come to the rescue. They begin to show him that preschool is a great place and get him involved with the different activities they are doing. This book would be good to use with pre-k through 1st because those first few days can be tough for the younger students.

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney is a perfect book for the first day of school. This starter book is an easy read for new learners and will help young students with their possible fear of the first day of school and missing their mama. Llama “meets new faces, hears new names, sees new places and watches new games”, but when mama llama leaves he feels shy. Llama opens up and learns that his mama isn’t leaving him forever and that “He loves Mama… and SCHOOL, too”! The pictures are cute and...more

This book is about a little llama that is starting school. He is very sad and does not want to play any of the games the other kids are playing and he does not want to eat. He thinks his mama is not going to come back to get him. At the end of the day when he sees mama he realizes that he likes school and that mama will always come to get him at the end of the day.
I would use this book during the first week of school to help students deal with any anxiety that they may be feeling. It's a cute li...more

I am a big fan of Llama Llama books! I think this one would be perfect to read to a child before their first day of school. This one is about how baby llama has his first day of school and when his mom drops him off he doesnt want her to leave. He is afraid that she won't come back to get him. But before baby Llama gets too upset, his new classmates show him how fun school can be and he forgets about missing his mama. This is a cute book and I loved all the pictures that showed the emotions of b...more

This Llama book is about going to a new school. Llama is at school and feels nervous, although his teacher is going above and beyond to make Llama comfortable, he is not biting. Llama wants his mom! Eventually, he comes around and starts to play with his new friends. When mom shows up Llama is excited to see her and shows her around his new school.

I would use this with a younger class to show that being at a new school can be scary, but we can make it through together! I could have them write ab...more
