This book did not work well to me, Cornelia Funke gave me another headache after reading her Inkheart series which I thought will be one of my favorites since the movie was great. I did like the movie very much and I dug a hole 6 feet under for the whole series not be seen by my eyes again. Well, I think I broke one of the important rules of reading and watching book-tie-in stuff. I did watch the movie before the book so that made things worst but I was hoping not.

Book of the Year Awards... Really? Is it unsympathetic of me to think that this book is... childish? How reductive should authors of children's lit be?

It's a great fantasy: Let's run away to Venice, and hide out in an old movie theater. We can dye our hair blonde, so no one will ever find us!
In a way, this is a European version of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, with siblings running away to a place stuffed with antiquities, and getting mixed up in an art mystery. I guess Victor the detective must have the Mrs. Frankweiler role.

Venice would be one of the places I'd visit before I die.
The story of The Thief Lord weaved wonderfully with the gorgeous city of Venice.
If this story had been in a different location it might not have been as appealing.
I love it when a book takes me to places I have never been before.
I rarely travel so that factor is very important to me.

The story centers around the run away brothers Prosper and Bo, whose mother recently passed away but left her boys with vivid stories of a city without streets and only canals, boats instead of cars, and palaces interspersed with a never-ending maze of teetering homes. Their Aunt Esther is only interested in adopting the younger Bo, and when faced with the prospect of being separated, the boys run from their native Germany to the Venice of their mother's bedtime tales.

The boys hook up with a colorful band of other homeless children, led by the enigmatic leader Scipio, known as The Thief Lord. Using a recently abandoned movie theater as their home, the children have carved out a reasonable existence for themselves, until Aunt Esther employs Venice detective Victor Getz to track down Prosper and Bo.

The homeless children engender the Lost Boys from Peter Pan, while a combination of character qualities encapsulate Peter Pan himself. The story is actually quite simple and reads very quickly at almost 350 pages.

My 7th-grade son read the book in advance of our family trip to Venice and couldn't wait for me to read it as well. My 4th grader shouldn't have any problem with the readability and concepts, and I think even my High Schooler will enjoy the simple innocence of the characters as well as the solidly colorful sense of Venice that Funke provides. The sweet spot for the story is probably high-reading 4th graders through 6th grade. And I'd highly recommend this for any children traveling to Venice.

There's a rather dramatic shift towards fantasy in the last third of the book. It took me by surprise, since the first two-thirds are quite realistic and down to earth. At first thrown off and not particularly appreciating the shift, I've found myself thinking about the conclusions and simple messages of the story and found myself rather liking it.

While rich with the emotions of the homeless children, Prosper and Scipio in particular, the story is very appropriate for most ages, with no violence, and clear children's-story morality.(less)

Adegan demi adegan dalam buku yang sarat petualangan ini bergulir dengan mulus dan ilustrasi-ilustrasi karya penulis yang menghiasi halaman-halaman buku menjadi nilai tambah novel anak yang dapat dinikmati segala usia ini.

I hate hate hate it when a book introduces magic 3/4ths of the way through! I like fantasy, thats not the problem. But the ordinary people are supposed to discover the magic at the beginning of the book. You know, the children run through a mysterious old house in the country, hide in a wardrobe, and bam! they're in Narnia. Perfect. This is an extremely good book. I recommend any one who likes Action or Suspense books to read this book. Here is a summary: Prosper and Bo escape from there aunt and uncle Esther's house, and go to Venice. I loved this book a lot. I was disapointed when I finished the book. I wanted to know what happened to "The Thief Lord".

I read The Thief Lord two years back when I was in Venice for skiing holiday. The book is excellent, and combined with the right surroundings I was smitten.

Venice in the winter is misty and dreamy, and when we walked around the city, I could almost see the Thief Lord running around with his friends, cunningly planning their theft, getting more and more mixed up in the plots of grown-ups around them. I didn't enjoy this book that much because I didn't feel the connection to the characters which is crucial for me to really enjoy a book. Cornelia Funke does a wonderful job of telling the amazing story of Proper and Bo, orphans who have escaped to Venice, Italy based on their late mother's fantastical descriptions of the city. I was told to start with this book, but began with Inkheart instead. Inkheart is entirely of a different variety, totally magical, but this one is destined to be the classic. It might have got lost in translation or it might not have been there in the first place, but whichever it is, something doesn't feel quite right about this. The Thief Lord has many dark elements: the plight of street children, the tragedy of having loveless parents, the tragedy of having no parents at all, and the dangers of living in a criminal underworld. Funke touches upon the dark histories of Scipio and Hornet, but never does more than imply. In many cases this works very well. This was the my Very first novel of my life , i finished it at around October 2006 .

I kept fluctuating between 3 and four stars. Ultimately I'd probably opt for 3 and 1/2, but since that's not an option, I'll go with four because I think it's more of a personal taste thing over the quality of the book.

You can become older or younger, depending on which animal you ride on. The wing was missing for a long time, and Scipio and Prosper get stuck on the island for a while. After Scipio rides - Prosper thought better than to ride the merry-go-round - he is stuck as an adult forever because of Barbarossa, an old, fat man who owns a little knick knack store. He doesnt jump off in time, kicks the lion, and breaks off a wing once he is already a young child, breaking the merry-go-round. The children are cross with Barbarossa, and with knowledge of Scipio's lies, Bo being nearly stuck with his aunt, and Hornet being taken to the orphanage of the Merciful Sisters after the police invade the Stella while the others are dealing with the Conte, who owns the merry-go-round, nothing can ever be the same. The children do end up together in the end all the same, but they have to live in different places; yet still safe. Scipio, who changes his last name from Massimo to Fortunato - The fortunate one - and lives with "the snoop," as Riccio calls him, who is the detective Victor Getz. Riccio and Mosca live in a shabby little place out of their own free will. Prosper and Hornet and Bo all live at Ida Spavento's house, who was the owner of the missing wing from the merry-go-round. This book really kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. I recomend this book to you strongly.(less)

My ten-year-old daughter recommended I read this novel, which is probably the only reason I picked it up. I’ll take her recommendations more seriously from now on (though I’ll probably pass on The Babysitters’ Club books she likes so much).

A pair of runaways make their way to Venice, Italy, and are lucky to fall in with a group of kids living in an abandoned theatre and supported by the mysterious Thief Lord, a child who makes seemingly impossible robberies commonplace.

Esta história vai tocar num dos laços mais sagrados que pode existir para as crianças e que é um laço que estas conhecem bem. Quem tem irmãos e cresceu entre beliscões e abraços sabe do que falo. Este livro fala às crianças porque fala-lhes de um amor que elas conseguem compreender, o amor que há entre irmãos.

Irmãos que reclamam e mandam vir e às vezes até nos beliscam mas que são fortes por nós e tomam conta de nós. Esta é uma história em que o irmão mais velho é bem tratado, vemo-lo a fazer sacrifícios pelo mais novo, vemo-lo a tomar as rédea, este irmão não ficou magoado com o irmão por os tios não o escolherem, pois sabe que a culpa não é dele.

A história lida bastante bem com o tema da família e principalmente com famílias de adopção. É sempre agradável ver uma imagem positiva das mesmas em livros infantis.

O livro é fácil de ler mas é também divertido de se ler em família e se a criança gostar há sempre o bónus de em seguida se poder ir alugar a versão cinematográfica para se ver em conjunto. Um livro que sem dúvida saí com o nosso selo de recomendação infantil/juvenil! - Catarina(less)

The cover and the title made me hope for many fun and exciting scenes and plots, and I was very shocked to see that it delivered, with so much more than that.

This book is a twisting unraveling adventure from beginning to end about two young boys who have run away to Venice, Italy to escape being separated by their guardians. They meet a group of street children who take them in, and every character is connected and holds heavy weights of purpose throughout the story. There are so many intense surprises, changes, and moments, all with great cleverness and well-placed humor. The descriptions had me in Venice running alongside of these children. Another interesting thing is the point of view shifting, that kept it very fresh and interesting to see the inner-workings of different characters at different crucial points. I could not stop reading this book because I 'had' to know what happened next after every page.

The only sad part of this book to me is the ending. It was maybe okay, but overall it was a letdown for me. There is an introduced element of magic that does not really blend with the almost entire book before it, and even though I can excuse that part because it was still interesting, I really didn't like how prevalent the character of Barbarossa became. To me he was not a main character, and yet he stepped in, ruined everything for the characters, and for the ending. I liked the idea of The Thief Lord's impulsive change to his fate, but maybe it could have happened a different way. I just really hated that character Barbarossa. One of the biggest reasons I did not like him is because the story ends with him! As I read, I was thinking of so many cool ways the book could end, but instead it tarnishes the name of one of the most interesting characters, and even the title of the book. I was so happy with the story, and this whole section left a distaste in my mouth which is bad when you loved 90% of it. It was one of those too good to be true kind of reads where you are so anxious for it to not get ruined, and then it does. At least with this book in particular it was still worth it to me, and I would still recommend it to anyone. It is an in-depth imaginative story that also explores youth and adulthood at the same time. I wish I could give it 5 stars.(less)

This book is about two brothers named Prosper and Boniface who run away to Venice together in order to not be separated. They are supposed to be living with their aunt and uncle because their mother has just passed away, but the boys choose to run away after finding out that Aunt Ester and Uncle Max only want to adopt Boniface, because he is younger. This book is fun and is a good story to me at first. It was a thrilling and fun book. I kept reading and it became more and more engaging. Then suddenly it became so boring. I don't enjoy reading fantasy books, especially something about magicians, like Harry Potter. But at first, I thought that this book was not a fantasy book, so I was so happy and enjoyed reading. But when I read nearly to the end, I realized that this contained fantasy! Sometimes, I enjoy reading full-fantasy books too(if it's not about magicians). But I really didn't like when those who doesn't has any magic at all suddenly meets a fairy-tale-like something and then it ends in this book. I wished that the orphans solve the problems they have for each of themselves. And also, I wanted for the writer to teach us that if we all gather our small powers, it can be really strong. But at the end, it kind of breaks. I could see the writer trying to make the gathering a little bit more, but still it broke apart. Even if the end was not so good to me, the rest was really fun. It reminded me of Venice, where I went on a trip a few weeks before. The story often tells about Venice's old houses and the Vaporetto, and the Rialto Bridge, and it's really in Venice. It's the similarities of the story's Venice and the 'real' Venice. However, the gorgeous house which is shown at this book is not in 'real' Venice. (Well.. It is a fiction..but there were no gorgeous houses in Venice!! Not even one!!) Well, there might be some houses that are a little more richer than others, but there were no really big houses with a gorgeous door like a house at The Thief Lord. That is the difference between the 'real' Venice and the book's Venice.

I recommend this for someone who likes adventures. That's because there are a lots of adventures in this book. Also, I recommend this for someone who knows the Italian language well because there are some Italian words in the book and you have to find the meaning at the back of the book to know what it means! It really irked me because I don't know Italian language. I also recommend this book for somebody who likes fantasy AND a realistic fiction, and likes a book mixed up with both of them. That's because this book is realistic at first, but has fantasy at the end. It is mixed up. If you don't like just one, this book would be boring to you. This book made me think that if we gather each of our small powers, we can do anything. (Even if the end doesn't really mentions this..) If we don't gather our powers, our own powers are so weak that we cannot do anything except just follow orders and do as we are told.

"He had given himself a name that everyone had to call him. It was 'The Thief Lord.'" Yes, The Thief Lord.
