Midnight Falcon (The Rigante #2)
Bane the Bastard is the illegitimate son of the Rigante king who men called Demonblade. Born of treachery, Bane grew up an outcast in his own land, feared by his fellow highlanders, and denied by the father whose unmistakable mark he bore–the eyes of Connavar, one tawny brown, the other emerald green.

Okay, review time...
Midnight Falcon (Bane's soul name) doesn't follow on directly from Sword In The Storm. There is about a fourteen year gap, giving time for Bane to grow into his teens. The main focus of this book is Bane's life and character as the outcast bastard son of Connavar, now the tribal king and famed Demonblade...
Bane has just lost his mother and after years of trying to gain his father's love, or even a kind word, seems lost of hope. He's grown to be a strong warrior, even at fifte...more

This book is without a doubt one of my top favorite books I have ever had the pleasure of reading, if not thee top. The first one was entertaining and a great read, but this one is an absolute wonder. I can't really say what it is about this book that is so fascinating, just that I love every single aspect. Bane is a wonderful character who has a lot of depth and range. I find it rare to come across such well-written characters, so that immediately drew me into the book.

This author is amazing. I was told to read this series by Orson Scott Card at a seminar of his. He said to read it if you want to understand strength of character. He's right. The characters in these books are faced with such heart wrenching decisions it makes you want to cry. David Gemmell writes his characters with such power. As young Bane tries to make something of his life, he must overcome not just physical obstacles, but ones of friendship and loyalty as well. The main part of the story i...more
When I first started reading this novel I was disappointed that it wasn't a direct follow-up to the first book of the series...I was expecting another novel based around Connavar but instead it is about the life of his bastard son Bane. However, once I had gotten over my initial disappointment I was treated to what has become one of my favorite novels of all time. The characterization is wonderful with the hero being all too human and suffering the consequences of his poor actions. The storytell...more
I like some of the concepts of this book/series actually, makes me wish for simpler times. Anyhow, somewhat predictable apart for one thing which shall not be spoilt, but that thing was kind of hamfisted so whatever. Going to read some other thing as palette cleanser before the next one though, had enough of broody angry dudes for a long while.
David Gemmell does it again, the second book in the Rigante series and it is just as good as the first one, fantasticaly written characters who you just want to meet or be like, with a fantastic hero in the shape of Conavars son Bane, read this book NOW or better still read Sword in the Storm first and then read this, you will be glad you did.
I was loaned the Ravenheart series by a good friend and read it during a summer camping trip to a state forest; one of those trips that the extended family goes on and spends a week at a 4 campsites with tents and picnic tables. I was surprised that I'd never heard of Gemmell at the time, but really loved his storytelling! For the past 4 years, I bring the four Rigante books (Ravenheart, Midnight Falcon, Stormrider and Sword in the Storm) with me for this annual trip and have a great time reread...more

This is characteristic Gemmell: Unpretentious entertainment, not very inventive but believable, and hard to put down once you have started reading. It is not one of his best, however.
Loved this series the first time I read it and it's even better the second time. Gemmell writes his fantasy in such a unique way it almost has a philosophical essence to it although the writing is fairly straightforward. Which is most likely why it is a quick read, but thought provoking and compelling at the same time. This Rigante series is amazing and any lover of fantasy, action, drama and questions of morality in life or death situations should really read more from this author.

Probably the 3rd or 4th time I'm reading this. Gemmell is one of my favorites.
Continuing into the series, or as a stand-alone book, this is another great story. A parody of our world, some 2000 years ago, the setting brings to life essences of Britain and Rome as time moves forwards some twenty years from the first book, Sword in the Storm, aging known characters are birthing new ones to complete the first half of the saga. This story, as with the others, moves seemlessly from the end of the last, keeping the same pace throughout. If you read and liked Sword in the Storm,...more
The Rigante series is a slight departure from the Drenai series. The Rigante are kind of an alternate reality version of the Celtic Tribes, and these stories tell some interesting stories in that setting.
The heroes are perhaps a little less larger than life, and magic less prevalent in these books than the Drenai books, but the same kind of deep characters and tough as nails warriors fill the pages. Good sword and sorcery with emphasis on the sword.

A cracking follow-up to Sword In The Storm. This story is about Bane, the bastard son of Connavar the Rigante king. Gemmell has again produced a master work of fantasy/history with powerful characters and believable story lines. Couldn't put it down!
