An interesting book, and quite worth the effort required to read it. At least in part, it is a scholarly analysis of the religious establishment and its fight with free thought. A worthy goal, and an admirable though imperfect effort. (i) I felt that the author's tone is similar to those of religious leaders, as if he expects the readers to take his arguments on faith. Only towards the end of the book does one find chapters where claims about the Bible, the Koran or the Talmud are backed up with...more

I do not exaggerate at all when I say that I think this might be the most important book that's been published this century. For me, it was like finally reading through the exact system of beliefs that I've held for my entire life, but written down in a logical order, such that their validity and logic cannot be questioned. And though the revolution may not yet have won, if you look at the success of this book combined with the success of Sam Harris' "The End of Faith," and Dawkins'...more

It seems the Atheist community is more afraid of Christians than I thought. I read the book in hopes of gaining some insight as to how an Atheist mind derives things like morals, purpose, and direction. What I ended up with was a heap of strawman arguments against Christianity in a vain attempt to make themselves feel like the "better men".

Basic premise: If a Christian/Jewish/Muslim man is wrong about something, their God doesn't exist.
[example of Christian/Jewish/Muslim man be...more

I take everything Michael Onfray says with a grain of salt; regardless, he knows what he's talking about. The man is a certified genius, or just a very good writer. He seems intent on pointing out the monotheistic under- [or over-] tones of everything in the Western and Middle Eastern world--and he's probably right. Religion rules from California to Pakistan, whether or not one is a church-goer. Very enlightening, although he seems to have an agenda, despite his claim otherwise.

Entertaining, enlightening, humorous and overall interesting. Have I ever heard his "new" case against the the monotheistic religions? Yes. Did he present it better than most? Absolutely. I would much rather read this than Dawkins newest book.

This book is very similar to God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens in that a good deal of the material covered overlaps, but it is from the perspective of a French Philosopher which made it a little more interesting for me.

each of the monotheistic faiths--islam, christianity, judaism--is not only indefensible, but pernicious, unless you judiciously select from the texts.

I learned a lot about atheism from the French perspective. There is some great philosophical references that I was not aware of.
