Kumpulan artikel Pak Martin ini semuanya membicarakan tradisi dan lembaga-lembaga Islam tradisional di Indonesia, mulai dari pesantren, tarekat, hingga tradisi ilmiahnya. Buku ini memperlihatkan kepada kita dinamika internal tradisi Islam 'tertua' di Indonesia ini. Sangat berguna bagi mereka yang 'kurang kenal' tradisi pesantren, dan penting dalam membantu kita membentuk perspektif yang lebih 'fair' tentang Islam tradisional di Indonesia.

buku lama, tapi barusan [november 2012] diterbitkan lagi dengan tambahan bab oleh penulisnya.
saya memuji data lapangan yang ia himpun: di yogya, banten, maupun tempat-tempat lain.
belum sempat review isinya.

Martin van Bruinessen is a Dutch anthropologist and author, who has published a number of publications on Kurdish, Indonesian, Turkish, Persian, Zazas subjects, and also on aspects of Islam as a whole.
