It begins, "This is the story of Amanda, the kind little snake who lived near the edge of the green jungle, beneath a beautiful, flowering tree." She is, of course, the main character. Other important characters are the jungle fairy whose name is too long and difficult to pronounce, so everyone called her "Toots," Amanda's best friend Archibald,a little monkey, and, lastly, the snooty little bush pig, who is responsible for the long journey where all the adventures happen.
