Was he simply incapable of love?

Top New Zealand lawyer Hugh Walton was one of the coldest men Julia had ever met.

She was prepared to love him, but she couldn't break down the final emotional barrier.

And Hugh made it clear he preferred the company of the icily beautiful Ann Farrow, who would never challenge him to reveal any human warmth, or offer him the kind of passion Ju...more

3.5 rounded up

This one had it's very amusing parts. The mismatched hero and heroine, Hugh and Julia, are staying in a house full of his family who are actors, musicians and artists. The h is a free spirit who doesn't wear a bra and the H is a stuffy, emotionally withdrawn lawyer with a huge stick up his butt.

There's a lot of family drama and scenes involving the h which are sometimes quite funny. Of course the H is involved with an OW who actually fits him to a T.

Even though we get the desire...more

The Marlows are a theatrical family. Michael Marlow is a world famous playwright and director and his wife, Connie an award-winning actress. They have six children, all artists of a type, except for their adopted son who is a high powered corporate lawyer. Hugh Walton is a loner; keeping his emotions tightly in check and his private life strictly private. He’s often out of his depth with the fun loving exuberance of his adoptive family, and now an adult, he tends to steer away from the large fam...more

I admit that I sometime struggle with books by Susan Napier. For some reason, her humor and her heroines don't appeal to me very much. However, I usually end up at least respecting her work and appreciating that she is trying to put a bit of screwball comedy into her romances. For me, this one just missed the mark. The story was filled with annoying characters and scenes that were supposed to be funny and endearing, but just flopped. I found myself hoping for a stray cat or dog to show up so tha...more

Don't let him keep you down, sister! Girl power! And all those other saying of feminine empowerment are well deserved by this heroine.

3.5 stars. Great heroine. Love how she doesn't fall apart when she gets rejected. She is confident enough to know he really cares for her and she doesn't give up or get distracted by the OW red herring.

22 March 2013 - Maybe I just have Pride and Prejudice on my mind, but I just noticed that Hugh's parents are George and Lydia Walton. And George is abusive. It suddenly makes so much sense. :)

Perhaps being born on Valentine’s Day was an omen that Susan Napier would become a romance writer. This New Zealand author has written over 30 Mills & Boon category romances since 1984. Napier and her husband Tony Potter met when they both worked at the Auckland Star newspaper. After they married, she left the newspaper to work for a film company where she learned the art of dialogue. After th...more
