I read this book to show my former boss that I was willing to work with her in her efforts to find out how all of her "beans'" strengths could mesh (which could only happen after everyone knew what strengths they had to contribute and when each bean had shared his/her strengths with the rest of the team).
I like the organization of the book, the detailed information about strengths, and even the online test you take to find out what strengths you have. I believe the test is...more

everyone, seriously
Total awesomeness!
This book and the included test (be sure to buy a new copy) inspired me for months. Finding out my top 5 strengths made who I am make so much more sense. I love their approach of focusing on what you are "designed" to do, rather than trying to shore up your weaknesses. They have specific suggestions for each strength which includes which kinds of folks you should pair up with and how others will react to your strength. For instance my top one is "Idea...more

OK. I am 50-50 on these types of books as some are drivel some are gems. This is one of the gems.
The book itself is not the answer, as you need to get online to attend the tests, which will give you your profile. The book is simply the 'carrier' for your unique password (only one use!..do not buy this on eBay etc without the read sealed envelope assured). After that, the book details the categories of which your strengths will relate, so only a handful of pages will be applicable...more

"Do you have the opportunity to do your best everyday?" This is the challenge posed to everyone picking up this book.
Answer: Chances are, you don't. All too often, our natural talents go untapped. From the cradle to the cubicle, we devote more time to fixing our shortcomings than to developing our strengths.
Main lesson: "You cannot be anything you want to be--but you can be a lot more of who you already are."

Okay, so I am generally not that interested in these kinds of books (I always feel like I mess up personality tests by analyzing them too much), but we had to take this test and find our top 5 strengths for work. I would have to say that out of all of the ones I have looked at so far, this one is the most accurate and interesting. It is based on the idea that to be happy and successful, we need to focus less on fighting our weaknesses and focus more on magnifying our strengths.

What a fascinating tool! I really connected with the idea that you can't necessarily change everything and anything about yourself (someone who sucks at science isn't all that likely to become a brain surgeon); but you can take a quality or characteristic you already possess and make it a whole lot better. It's all about maximizing your positives, rather than trying to improve upon weaknesses.

Another book from Gallup about finding your strengths. This one has a list of 10 action tips for each of your strengths. Also has some tips for how to work with people who possess each of the 34 strengths A worthwhile read.
Personally, I find the idea of developing your strengths a worthwhile one. It makes good sense to me to maximize that which I am best at and develop partnerships with people who have the strengths that I lack.

My sister gifted me this book, one that at her work they use for team building and skills assessment. It's interesting--in the way that self-help books can be. The thing I enjoy about the book is that it comes equipped with an online component where you take an exam to figure out what your strengths are, and then can build your own profile using that online. Through other first person accounts and analysis, the book tries to encourage those to bouy their innate abilities, rather than teaching...more

There was one sentence I liked.
The traits, "strengths" detailed were
kind of odd. As satisfying as any
other personality test, though...
complete with a big 'ole profile.
It suggested I go into the 3 areas I'm
considering: writing, teaching, or research.
So there's that.
And both funny and welcome, it caused me to
consider jobs like: interior decorating (where
I would no doubt perfect my "ummm"s), t...more

Overall a good concept. The subtitle is misleading--this book does not contain the online test. The book merely contains descriptions and action plans for each of the 34 strengths. You have to purchase your own (new) copy of the book in order to get an access code from it, and then the survey must be taken online. Having taken the survey, you find out your top 5 strengths. I did enjoy taking the survey and finding out my top 5. It helps me put into words what I already sensed about my pers...more

I took the Strengthsfinder survey today (http://www.strengthsfinder.com) and revealed the following potential strengths.

Read this for work. It was a bit of a relief that it confirmed what I have always regarded as my strengths and is fairly consistent with my Myers-Brigg personality type, INTJ. Of course, the real challenge is figuring out how to develop them in a way that will yield meaningful and life-changing results.
So, just what are my strengths? Intellection, Input, Deliberative, Learner, Ideation. I've got Buckingham's book, Now, Discover Your Strengths, teed up to read next (Gallup sure ...more

This book requires taking a short, online test to then determine what your top five strengths are, then the book gives you an overview of what is unique about those strengths, how they interact with other types of strengths, and tips for really turning those strengths into assets.
Its an interesting concept, but the most fun part is comparing yourself to other people you know, so its not much fun if you are the only one with the book. It doesn't really tell you anything you don't al...more

I have very mixed feelings about this book. First off, while I agree that our society favors fixing our weaknesses rather than focusing upon our strengths, I'm a little leery of how this concept could "puff up" people who don't need more praise and give others an excuse to avoid trying to improve themselves. But I do think that over all, it's better to focus on the positive, rather than the negative.
Secondly, I'm not sure how accurately this test gauged my strengths. Two...more

This book is the newest part of a personality test/career happiness cult that I find irresistible. You have to buy the book to get a code to take the online test, but it's really interesting. I don't know, I think it's an addictive cult. My top 5 strengths are Communication, Strategic ("what if" type thinking), Input, Woo (as in wooing people to like you), and Positivity. I want everyone I know, especially those I might work with, to read this and tell me their top 5...

marked it as to-read
I was just told this by a friend. He said, "Speaking of skillsets you need to buy and do : Strength Finder 2.0. by Tom Rath. I did it, it was FANTASTIC. I now know my Top 5 strengths and will spend the rest of my life improving those rather than the things I'm not as strong as: People skills, leading, etc. Instead, my Top 5 are Input, Ideation, Renovation, Intellection, and Future Vision. "
So.. it's among the top of my next books to read.

If you are looking for direction or re-building your career, at any stage of life, highly recommended. You fill out a 20-min on-line survey and receive top five "strengths" describing how you approach challenges, routines, team work, etc. Actually rather a positive experience and helpful to see one's self as others may see you. Originally designed for managers building teams, etc.

I have found this extremely helpful as a tool for people who report to me at work... It's like getting to know 5 years worth of strengths in like 20 minutes. Very helpful in appreciating the incredible resources available right in the office.
Also, as an insight into family members... wow! It basically just articulates what you kind of knew already but didn't quite have words for.

I took the test and found the results interesting and compelling. The action points are very practical and can offer some good insight towards how one can act to develop their strengths.
For an online test, this is probably the best 'personality test' you're going to get (aside from taking some type of interview test).
While I think focusing on your strengths is always a good idea, I do think individuals should not ignore their weaknesses. There are plenty of low-lying f...more

I appreciated the fact that the Gallup studies concluded that "people who do have the opportunity to focus on their strengths every day are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and more than three times a slikely to report having an excellent quality of life in general." It's no wonder why I loved teaching so much! I got to utilize my Top 5 Themes!
