Note: I read this book and wrote the review in 2003 before I met my husband.
This book had some excellent ideas for savoring your time while living alone, to make it seem less lonely. There were so many good ideas in it, that I couldn’t possible do the book justice by writing a few paragraphs about it here.
Barbara found herself living alone after having a man in her life for many years. Rather than be depressed about her current situation, she made the best of her time to herself and accomplishe...more

Loved it. I'm not a self-help book kind of gal, and I was hesitant to read this book because I do live alone and love it--I don't need any help in the matter. What made the book so delicious for me was for the first time hearing everything I believe and feel about living alone reflected back to me for the first time. I've always felt like a freak in the world--I honestly don't know of anyone else like me. But now I do. Agent 99 is my kindred spirit. Although she entered singlehood tentatively, w...more
I originally intended to only read bits of this book instead I read the whole book. I want to live on my own one day so that is what drew me to the book. I never watched Get Smart but I think that with twenty years experience living on her own Feldon is extremely qualified to write this book. Some people have complained that Feldon sounds elitist because of her referencing high culture. That never bothered me. I found her accessible and wise. The book focuses on the psychological and social aspe...more
The physical dimensions of the book were smaller than I was expecting, so I flew through it. It's an encouraging book. It's much better than Better Single Than Sorry, a book covering similar territory.
This is an empowering book. It has wonderful suggestions and encouragement for being happy to live alone. It's not at all judgmental.
It's not about putting up with being alone for now, while hoping for love eventually, but rather, it's about fully embracing being uncoupled indefinitely.

OK, so you've finally taken his unacceptable behaviour to the wall, and now you're on your own. Devoid of relationship-entrail-reading and high-minded philosophy about women's political struggles, Feldon's book gives sensible, do-able advice on how to go about how to summon up a rich, full life for yourself that doesn't include living with a man. In particular she torpedoed my illusion that my life would be so much better if only my soul mate would show up, and she made me fell very normal and c...more

I discovered it on my own
This book changed my life. It reminds me how to cherish alone-time. It taught me that being alone is not lonely; rather, a chance to connect and to take responsibility for myself. It also got me through a time in my life when I moved away from my then-boyfriend, friends, and family when I needed to accomplish one of my lifelong goals and it had to be done completely by myself. I accomplished my Masters, met new friends, discovered beautiful places to visit, cozy places to eat, and reestablished...more

I had become very codependent on people, and I finally wanted to be able to live with myself. This book was very inspirational, and now I have tons of things that I want to do and try, even if it's without people.
