Let me start by saying that while I love to read, I can never EVER learn new skills from reading a book. I'm a very kinesthetic/visual learner. When I was learning to crochet, I would have my husband read and figure out the instructions and then show me how to do it.

The format of this book is very visual. There are very few pages that contain mostly text instructions. The book also has you doing something by the end of the first chapter and each chapter builds on the ones b...more

I actually brought this book on the train with me for pleasure-reading while I was commuting. I found this book on the shelf in the library while looking for a book on PHP, and something about the look of its spine had me pull it down and browse through it. I wasn't sure about the layout of the book at first (it's full of pictures, asides, and "handwritten" notes), but it seemed interesting enough that I thought I'd take it home with me and look through it. Now, I consider myself prett...more

This is an excellent book for anyone looking to learn HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Even if you already know the basics of HTML it's a great book to refresh yourself.

In this book you cover the basics of HTML, XHTML, and CSS. You'll learn how to correctly create the form of your page with XHTML and correctly design your page with CSS. After you're done reading it you'll definitely be prepared to create your own website and read more books on more advanced techniques.

Worked through this book to get familiar with HTML and CSS so I could do my PHP class homework. Loved how well the book kept my interest. Great explanations, kind of simplistic at times, but very straightforward and fun.

I've read two HTML books in my life now. The first was back in the early 1990s when <BLINK> was considered neat. This one I read to brush up on HTML but mostly to learn all about CSS. I started another book but realized I didn't have the fundamentals down so went for something easy to get started with. This book fit the bill. It is relatively complete in its coverage of XHTML and CSS (at least at the level I was interested in) and did it in an easy to read manner. I've also read the ...more

I haven't read the whole thing, but it has been a valuable introduction and reference. I'm hoping to use this book to teach some HTML to my daughter this summer.

Now to learn about building a web page from scratch instead of the need-to-know basis we have here at work.

I'd assume it's the best HTML and CSS primer out there.

Superb. Well worth reading even if you're already pretty familiar with HTML and CSS. The first few chapters may seem a bit remedial but it quickly develops depth and does a great job explaining the right way to apply style to web pages. If you still find yourself reaching for a table to layout a page then definitely read this book. If you're just getting started, or need to recommend a book to a beginner then this should be at the top of the list - read this book and then get a good reference (l...more

Great tutorial in XHMTL and CSS. Very practical. I'm a big fan of Head First books. They're not references, but give you a foundation to dive into a technical area with some confidence and knowledge of resources required to further pursue that area. How HTML and CSS are used has changed over the years and this book will give you a contemporary viewpoint as well as the history and insight into why other ways of using HTML/CSS didn't work. There're many sample exercises you can do on your own ...more

Great format - very easy to read and understand, and the information really sticks with you. I would recommend these Head First books to anybody interested in getting involved in working with HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Only 4 stars, however, for starting with HTML and not using strict XHTML requirements (for example, not teaching the need to close single tags until midway through the book) - why teach something and then add the caveat later that the instructions were incomplete?

The title should be XHTML & CSS with HTML. But that's not a bad thing.

I like the Head First style of O'Reilly technical books, they are more fun to read and stick in your memory better. I read this book to relearn the correct way to write webpages, rather than the old way which was only used when there barely was a web. It's interesting the improvements in standard style available, but that there's still more variation than some people would desire on how it shows up on the page.

I'm not done with this one yet, but I have to say it's one of the easiest training guides I've ever picked up. If it sometimes it gets a little patronizing in its quest to be approachable, the method seems to work in the end...I actually read half of this book in one weekend. It also has exercises you get to do during every chapter, which I always love.

The Head First books are the best I know. They teach programming from Java to C++. They teach it in a conversational manner that is easy to read and understand. I was able to learn HTML in only a couple of weeks and took off on building websites or reworking ones that I already had. It was a great book that I highly recommend.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Sometimes it's a bore to get through these books, but this book was very interesting. I read it straight through. It was useful and informative, easy to follow. I just got the their book on Javascript, and hoping there's one for PHP. The book said PHP was coming out in 2006, but I haven't found it.

This is a great starter book for those people who'd love to make a web page, but don't have the knowledge of a web designer. I already know these coding languages. But I've still have been keeping this book handy if I ever run into a design problems. This book is helpful for both me, the web design guru, and the you, the beginner.
