Twelve (The Winnie Years #3)

But now that Winnie is twelve—and one step closer to being a teenager herself—there is so much more to deal with. Will her new friendship with Dinah last? Can she handle the pressures of...more

Along the lines of "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," by Judy Blume, "Twelve" is for today's pre-teens/tweens. Some words and phrases that may be objectionable to a certain segment of our patrons: hard-on, v-word, vagina, boobs, boobful, boobed, "with boob," etc.
I thought it was a fun read, using real kid language in the dialog and capturing that whole adolescent angst-y feeling fabulously.

Book two: Winnie Perry just turned twelve! Now that that she is one step closer to being a teenager big changes are in the future. Winnie has to deal with getting her ears pierced, sleepaway camp, junior high, and a new boy that she calls Lars. When Lars and Winnie start dating everything changes, her life, her clothes, and personnal style.Instead of wearing baggy Mcdonalds t-shirts, she is wearing tight fitted normal 7th grade girl clothes. The worst change of all is that she develops, meaning bra sho...more

I liked this book because it got into details really fast, so i never got bored. Twelve is about a girl named Winnie who she starts going through some changes, but all Winnie wants to do is stay a kid. Winnie also starts to loose here best friend Amanda when a new girl comes to school named Gail. So Winnie decides to be friends with another girl Dina. I also liked this book because Winnie decribes her years and what she goes though, in the summer and school year. The author probably wrote this b...more
I believe, Twelve by Lauren Myracle should be rated a three out of five stars. I mostly loved this story because of how I could completely relate to what the twelve year old girl was going through and how similar it truly was to every other twelve year old girl's life. The only reason I didn't give this book a great rating was because of its lack of detail. It just didn't explain enough about certain insidences that happened in the story, but it did for useless parts of the story. Winnie is turn...more

Review: I decided to review all of these books together because, well, I read them all together. I read the first one on a whim, a decision to develop myself "professionally" (because I dream that, when I'm finished with my MLS program, that I'll be a kick-butt YA and children's services librarian in a public library who will help reluctant readers find the book that will help them turn the corner and develop a lifelong love of reading). Wow, I can't believe I didn't review this old favorite of mine yet. Twelve is all about Winnie Perry's adventures at this age, from starting puberty to junior high, new friends to boyfriends to sleepaway camp.....
I probably read this book for the 1st time when I was 7. Wayyyy too young, I don't know how I liked it, but I read this and Eleven and Thirteen, before my 9th birthday. (I had to be 8 1/2 to read Thirteen, plus it wasn't out when I first read Twelve) This is a great book for any 12-year...more

I read this book when i was 12. And i loved it !
Winnie is now 12 and in the 7th grade, and she has to deal with many different things, like getting her ear pierced, what kind of clothes she wears, and boys. She likes this boy named Lars. Winnie and Lars started to go out and now she was not wearing baggy pants and graphic tee's but tight clothes. Everything about her was changing, only because she was going through "girl stuff".
I recommend this book if you are now turning 12. It is pretty short...more

Winnie is now twelve and is “on the brink of womanhood”, meaning it’s time for a plethora of embarrassing puberty occurrences, including periods and bra shopping. In addition to this, Winnie must also deal with gaining friends, losing friends, accidentally endangering friendships, and all this on top of starting junior high!
Ah, this book made me remember 7th grade and what a cruddy time it was. So kudos to capturing the realism! This would be an interesting companion piece to “Are You There God,...more

An enjoyable tween/early teen novel featuring Winnie Perry. Winnie still struggles a bit with the loss of her lifelong friend Amanda to mean queen Gail, but is philosophic and appreciative of her best-friendship with Dinah. As she enters seventh grade (no longer an elementary school student!) and laments to 5-year old brother Ty that life is so much easier in elementary school, she gains a new best friend, Cinammon, and catches the eye of eighth-grader Lars. Love is in the air! This was a fun re...more
reads very much like a modern day judy blume novel - and the author cites JB as an influence.
not my favorite genre - but I can see this as serving a useful purpose for some girls. in a perfect world parents lovingly and perfectly instruct and guide their children through coming-of-age milestones, but sometimes it can be nice (as a kid) to read about these experiences, written with a touch of humor, privately as well. it could effectively be used as a tool for discussion with your child (if all p...more

Twelve, by Lauren Myracle is all about growing up. Twelve is part of a series of books by Lauren Myracle. This book is about a girl named Catherine who just turned twelve and goes through a lot of changes. Some examples of changes are getting her ears pierced going, to summer camp, making new friends and losing some, and much more. I think Lauren Myracle made this series about her childhood because it sounded like in the book she was telling a story. My favorite character in this book is Catheri...more
I really like this series, which is funny because I'm not really a fan of Myracle's other stuff.
I love the voice in the Winnie books - she's one of the few authors who can actually drag me back to that age when reading. She nails a lot of hard to nail feelings and situations.
I read Eleven and liked it, and when a patron complained about content in "Twelve" I read it so that I could discuss it with her. It's true that (SPOILERS) Myracle writes about tampons, periods, and erections. But she does s...more

I can see this one disturbing some patrons. Adolescence is messy. It has the most graphic description of tampon application I have ever read (and boy I could have really used reading it in 7th grade when one of my friends had a birthday party at Wild Waves. Why me! I still feel the embarrassment.) Overall, 'Twelve' read pretty pitch-perfect to me- the reluctance to admit that maybe your mom is right and you do need a bra, the borderline paranoia that people might notice you in a swimsuit, the sh...more

I wouldn't say I learned anything from this book, but this book is funny, clever, and something all girls in middle school should read. It's really about this girl that goes through middle school and dealing with family, friends, popular kids, bullies, crushes, embarrasing moments, and ex- best friends. It's your typical middle school story for you. You might be saying right now why would I want to read it if it's like all the other middle school drama stories... well its way different it still h...more
I liked the book it was about a girl named Winnie and she starts to lose her friend in school.
She gains a new friendship with a girl named Dina. Also as she gets twelve she starts to change.
She looks different and see all her friends and other people in a different way only because of this one thing.
Life of a young adult hits her and she starts to understand that is just what happens in life because it will happen
to everyone and she is not the only one. I am not really into these kind of books...more

Turning twelve is BIG for Winnie Perry. And all of the embarrassing times and good times that come with it. Starting a new school, making new friends, dealing with older sisters and younger brothers and so much more. For Winnie, turning twelve isn't just a number, its a huge step in her life, filled with amazing milestones and things that she never thought could happen before. Winne learns what middle school is like and what its like to have a crush and so much more. This is one of my favorite b...more
My daughter is reading this series and I thought I would read it along with her. There is a good discussion in the book of a girl getting her period for the first time, and the reaction of friends to who has and who has not started. This sparked a good discussion with my daughter, which was nice.

I think Lauren Myracle has stolen my diary. In this book, Winnie must brave the embarrassing world of becoming a woman. Ugh. The humor and spot on emotions of this book resonated with me, but more importantly, made my daughter comfortable enough to talk with me about the enormous subject matter of growing up as a girl. We both agree it kind of stinks. In all sincerity, thank you Ms. Myracle for making an icky subject something my daughter and I can share a laugh about. Knowing girls like Winnie...more
This book is specially for the teens that are twelve. You learn how are the experiences of this girl and how does she lives. You realize that your not the only one changing that your not the only one that wants to look pretty. You will love this book so much. Reading this book you will realize that you just want everything like the main character in this story wants to put earring while her sister wants to get her driving license. If you are bored and you dont know what to do just read. Read any...more
I bought this for my niece, who's almost 13, but thought I should read it before I gave it to her to make sure that there's nothing she shouldn't read. So far it's just normal 12 year old drama, like buying your first bra. :-)

There was one page that was questionable so I called my SIL and talked to her. Other than that, it was a really cute book about the trials and tribulations of being a girl who's hitting puberty. If I was 12 I'd have liked it a lot more, but even at 29 it was cute and...more

Lauren Myracle brings forward another of her Winnie books. This time, Winnie has turned twelve and is finishing Grade 6 and moving into Grade 7. She is moving to the big school. There are new friends and old to meet up with, including some boys. Her values are tested in the summer when an old friendship looks like it is being reestablished. In addition, she must also endure bra shopping with her mother! But Winnie gets through it, albeit with some stumbles.

I loved this book. It is about a girl who is going through changes with her body and does not want to grow up and be mature. But now her mom is making her realize that she is growing up and that she will start to have to grow up more. I think this is a good book for girls that are starting to have changes in their life and grow boobs. I would reccomend this book to any boby over the age of ten. It is a great starter for girls who are turning into a women and I loved this book. There is also more...more
I loved that the author gave props to Judy Blume in the Acknowledgements even before the book starts. This book is very much like a Judy Blume book. In fact, it makes me want to go back and read several of Blume's books again as a middle-aged adult. I think that would be interesting. But you know how a book gives you actual, honest-to-God feelings? That's how this one is. It made me feel AS IF I was twelve and reading a Judy Blume book 36 years ago! The big difference is that I was such a late b...more

I picked this book because I read the book Thirteen Plus One which two books ahead of Twelve, I wanted to know the missing details so I kind of read them out of order. I love this series because they’re innocent and fun to read. I feel like I really get the characters in this book because I’ve been in their situations before. Like Winnie (the main character) she has to go through all of the middle changes and challenges. Like a lot of the books I read there predictable and similar to one another...more
More accurate portrayal of tween years from Lauren Myracle. Parental note: She is writing about stuff that really happens during the age of 12 (getting your period, getting boobs, being mortified, sneaking your Mom's copy of Wifey and sharing it with your friends, etc.) You probably are not ready for your 8yo to read this. I'm sending Twelve back to the library until my daughter is 10 or so, but it will be a great read for her later, just like Judy Blume was for my generation.
