About a year ago, I got myself a mat (eco friendly, of course), some stretch pants (organic cotton, duh), and went to a yoga studio to investigate what this bottle-nursing, teeny-tiny-spandex-wearing, mat-bag-dangling gang of people that I observed roaming the streets of my neighborhood were up to.
Now, after a year of actually sticking to a regular practice, (Insert applause here. Actually, forget that. Because, you see, I just don't need your external validation anymore. No offense.), I hav...more

This is on my "currently reading" shelf in perpetuity. Or until I hammer together a couple more e-shelves. Regarding the book: I sort of get eye-rollish about things referred to as "the Bible" of anything, and find it even a bit more grating when the topical focus is of a spiritual nature that is more broad than should be described in analogy to the pre-eminant book of one particular path to spirituality. Ok, that aside, it isn't this book's fault that the title did that. ...more

I'm in love with this book. It is a great life Bible, and it helps solidify the emotional and subconscious effects yoga has on me. For anyone who's thought about practicing yoga, you will be more than inspired if you read the 50 page introduction to this book. There is also a huge section of this book dedicated to the poses and the effects of the poses, and the final section of the book is about breathing. Yoga is definitely more than flexibility and if anything, being tight and gaining flexibil...more

I began studying this book over 8 years ago. This book was the cornerstone to the beginning of my serious practice of yoga. I practiced for years before I even took a yoga class. Now I study and practice Ashtanga, but would like to get certified as a teacher through Iyengar's teacher training because he is so focused on proper form and utilization of the right muscles. When I leave an Iyengar class, I can walk with my heart open and my shoulders back with ease.

I read and am still reading this book. I just returned to my Yoga practice and Iyengar is the man when it comes to breaking the practice down into the mystical aspects often overlooked in its American manifestation. Iyengar is poetic and the photos rock. He shows how the postures are really supposed to be taken and gives the benefits of each.

Haven't made it very far yet, but the this is one of those books that you could spend an hour thinking about a single sentence in the introduction. Though Iyengar is not my favorite style of yoga, B.K.S. is truly a guru. "Light on LIfe" was a great ready, i think this one is going be more of a guide book and reference than a nightly read.

I've been doing yoga since September, and I'm really enjoying it, so I decided I should learn more about yoga. Iyengar's Intro gives a good description of the history, philosophy, and practice of yoga. His English isn't great so the prose is confusing and unnecessarily complicated sometimes, but it adds to the mystique! ;-)

Light on Yoga is a great book for anyone interested in the philosophy behind Iyengar Yoga. It also has practice sections in the back of the book (a self study course you can do if you are motivated) and is full of pictures of a young B.K.S. Iyengar doing amazing and rare yoga postures.

This is indeed the bible of yoga asanas, or poses. This is a great reference for learning the yoga poses, seeing the progression of how to get into a pose, and just plain seeing some crazy yoga party tricks. This is THE resource for learning about poses beyond the classroom.

A fantastic reference book on proper asana form. Solid pictures and descriptions, but probably not something to sit down and just read. Great to have around to figure out the crazy asana that your instructor did last class that you can't quite recall how to get into.

OW! Yes, the bible. This is the book that made interested in yoga. A shame that I didn't follow it then (felt like the poses were impossible and kind of weird). Nevertheless, the book found its way in my life again 4 years later and has never left me since.

If you are a yogi, and want to learn precicely how to do any yoga pose, this book is "the bible" for that. There are pictures for each pose and at least 21 different instructions for how to get into that pose correctly.

might want to consult the Bhagavad Gita or a basic Hinduism book first, great step by step instruction on EVERY yoga pose known to man including a medical glossary in the back with corresponding curative poses

Great Reference book to find out &/or address specific issues or to check out series of asanas or postures within a certain theme, like inversions or twists or whatnot.

Many many asanas described very technically, with good accompanying photos. One of my favorite parts is the list of ailments and yoga relief poses.

Not so interesting to sit down and read, but a classic reference. With crazy pictures. Someday I'll be able to balance on only my elbows.
