James Durand had a difficult choice go West to Kentucky and be a poor farmer or go to sea and live a life of hardships and an early death. At the age of six he was apprenticed to a farmer in Northwestern Connecticut and by the age of eleven there were no more opportunities for him in Connecticut. Life in Kentucky was full of hardships and native attacks while a life at sea might be more profitable but often led to an early death.
