Attorney Ben Forbes wasn't worried at first when his wife, Carolyn, was late to pick him up at five p.m. Probably held up by traffic or some other inconvenience. But when the time grew to an hour, worry set in. It was only a twenty minute drive. There was no answer when he called. Entertaining kidnap story. Ben Forbes' wife is kidnapped by the husband whose wife he represented in a divorce case. The rejected husband seeks revenge, the eye for an eye, on Forbes. Not a lot new here, at least today, in the plot. What's good about this book is Brackett's deft handling of character -- you really get to know all these people -- and pacing.

Quickly paced thriller, well written and reminiscent of John D. MacDonald's Cape Fear in both writing style and subject matter. (This came out the year before Cape Fear, so I guess Cape Fear is reminiscent of this one.)

Well written, tight prose, but the constant shifting of character viewpoint - and personality! - left me with no protagonist to root for.

Leigh Brackett was born on December 7, 1915 in Los Angeles, and raised near Santa Monica. Having spent her youth as an athletic tom-boy - playing volleyball and reading stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs and H Rider Haggard - she began writing fantastic adventures of her own. Several of these early efforts were read by Henry Kuttner, who critiqued her stories and introduced her to the SF ...more
