Oh no…the Maximum Ride books have officially turned "eco-friendly". What happened to all the crazy mad scientist stuff? "Millions of fish are dying off the coast of Hawaii and someone--or something--is destroying hundreds of ships. Unable to discover the cause, the government..." Okay, I officially spent two hours of my life reading the fifth Maximum Ride installment. I was very disappointed by the fourth one in particular, and a little bit so by the third. So, I sat down with MAX with no expectations whatsoever, because I wasn't going to allow myself to be disappointed by it. That was a good idea, because it wasn't all that good. Was it horrible? James Patterson is an excellent author but I feel like the momentum in this series is slowly down or getting old for me. There was better closure in this series. Yet I felt it lacked the buildup in excitement. Some of it lacked believability even for para normal. It is for YA so maybe they by it more, somehow I doubt it.

This was the BEST of the maximum Ride books! I loved it! It wasn't at all repetitive and it wasn't anything like the 4th one! There was adventure, romance, suspense, humor, sarcasm, and it was well wrapped up but lest you hanging. BEST MR BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read it 2 times in 2 days and i am SOOOO excited to be reading it again. Fang, Total, Max, Angel, Gazzy, Iggy, and Nudge were AMAZING! READ IT!

I am sure that I might throw this at the wall while in the process of reading . . . Machine Geeks? Come on, Patterson, the Erasers were cooler than that. At least they actually FIGHT something in this one . . . I hope there will be some fang+max stuff . . . save the fish! not really though . . . it looks so gay . . . what happened to itex? i don't think they resolved everything of that matter in the first 3 books . . . i want some good stuff here! okay now i am just venting about how sucky they ...more

I swear I can't live without knowing what is happening to the flock but I miss the action in the first few books and have the couples lost feelings? I liked it better when they were secretive it made me feel as if I were part of a big secret I hope this is better than the last becuase despite what I've writen I absolutly LOVE thse books. I must read on and you should to.
I have a good feeling about this one.

The 5th book was not as good as the first 3.(and the 4TH was better than this one!)It was was better than most books I have read but compared to the 1st 4 it was boring.

This newest entry in the Maximum Ride series was fine. It had a lot of action, which is what I think James Patterson is talking about when he calls it a "pageturner." He's not overly concerned with plot, as the events of the story are basically the same as all the rest of the books--Max and the flock do some stuff, get chased, fight some new genetically enhanced enemies, and blow stuff up. And Max and Fang mope about each other. And then kiss.

The same monsters cause a severe amount of trouble for Max and the gang as well. A word to the wise: submarine's don't do well on their side. These creatures, mutants are a mystery from what they are to why they're attacking boats. Could Dr. Martinez's kidnapping and the beasts be connected somehow? And these problems are fairly trivial compared to the emotional roller coaster Max's life keeps her on. Dealing with Fang is a talent Max has yet to master. She grew up with him, their dog crates were next to each other back at the lab where they were created. When they escaped, he was her best friend, the one she trusted most in the world. But as they grew older, Fang began to show different feelings than brother, sister. Did Max share those feelings? Between battles and rescue missions, Fang and Max to find time to themselves and yes, there has been kissing and hand-holding. But she still wasn't sure where they stood until he makes it clear that she has a choice to make. She loves him, she loves him not. I won't give away her answer, you'll have to read the book!
I enjoyed this book and would read it again. It's got intense action, sarcastic comedy brought to you by Max, some romantic flings between two bird kids, and many adventures that you're sure to love!

The entire flock flies to a naval base in Hawaii to help get her back. The only way that the navy will allow the flock on a submarine to save Dr. Martinez is to go through basic training.

Training with the navy in Hawaii was absolutely hilarious. The fact that Iggy and Gazzy referred to the training BS? Great! During the combat training, the government agents were ‘incapacitated’ by Gazzy and a six year old Angel. Loved the scene when they had to explain that to their superior!

I’m liking how Angel is coming into her own. Her standing up to Max and then yelling at the sharks was just so… adorable! She’s a cute little six year old trying to be a hardcore badass and I can’t help but smile. I have a feeling she will grow up to become a very powerful young woman.

*singing* Love is in the air… Fang and Max, finally! Woot woot! It’s about time. Although I will admit I was enjoying Max’s inner termoil over ‘the red headed doctor.’ Max and Fang going on their first official date was so sweet. It brought back old dating memories. They were so awkward that it was adorable. Total also falls in love! He falls paws-over-heels for Akila, one of the rescue dogs at the naval base.

Don’t mess with Max’s flock or family. The flock saved Dr. Martinez with a vengeance, killing a new form of machine underwater erasers. Once Max and crew found Dr. Martinez, she says to Max, “I knew you would find me.” Sweet family moment that almost brought a tear to my eye!

Max is maturing as a flock leader and pseudo mother. She allows Nudge to stay at a school, even though Max and the rest of the flock does not want to. Max is letting the rest of the flock ‘spread their wings’ and make their own choices as they grow older. I can’t wait to see how the Max and the rest of the flock matures.

This book was all around solid fun. It had its usual suspense and great story. A definite recommend!(less)

So concerned that I was pretty surprised when I saw that a new book was coming out in the series. However, Patterson pleasantly surprised me with the fifth book in the Maximum Ride series, Max. Instead of being preached at or being walked through some cliche story, I was treated to a fresh new adventure that breathed new life into the series.

At the opening of Max, Max and her fellow bird children have joined an organization to spread awareness and fight the effects of global warming. Soon after, the Flock is enlisted by the U.S. government to investigate the death of millions of fish off the Hawaiian coast. It isn't long until the sinister Dr. Chu kidnaps Max's genetic mother, Dr. Martinez, and demands that Max and co. give up on their crusade against global warming or risk Dr. Martinez's death.

It was great to see the Flock working with the government this time instead of fighting it or running from it, as they have in previous books. Even though part of me missed the suspense and intensity of the constant chase from the earlier novels, Max is infused with enough drama and emotion to keep readers flipping pages. Overall, Patterson's writing was fun and entertaining to read, with a healthy dose of sass and wit. It seemed like his writing skill has also strengthened since The Final Warning and grow considerably since The Angel Experiment. I find that Max is much easier to read than the other novels and truly brings something original to the Maximum Ride universe.

The sudden increase of romantic content in Max, however, may bother some readers since it is not common to the series, but to others (such as myself) it's a welcome change and shows how the Flock is growing up. There also seem to be some neglect of Iggy and Gazzy compared to previous novels, but this didn't hurt the overall story. Of course, if you're a fan of these characters, than this approach may be a problem.

While this book is not perfect, it is, by far, the best book in the Maximum Ride series so far. I'm not a big fan of Patterson and have only read his Maximum Ride novels, but he just seems to pull out all of the stops on this one. I was pleasantly surprised by Max, especially after the disappointment of The Final Warning. There were points when I was reading this book that I saw it playing in my mind like a movie -even though, at times, a somewhat sappy, romantic movie. I certainly hope that future Maximum Ride novels will be just as enjoyable. (less)

Jeb Batchelder is the man who acted like a father toward them because they don't have parents except for Max. Max's mom is a veterinarian and her name is Valencia Martinez and whenever Max gets hurt her mom can help her get better. Later in the book Max's mom gets kidnapped by an Asian man named Mr. Chu now Mr. Chu is a man who works with big big businesses and is trying to get Max to quit working for them and he said that he would do whatever it takes to do so. Also later in the book Angel and Max go under water because that is where Mr. Chu is keeping her. While they are under water Max and Angel find these strange creatures that are eel like but they have pimples that have acid in them. These eel like things help Max and Angel get into the dome/submarine like thing just to get Max's mom. Eventually they do rescue her mom and then they go somewhere and after that Max and Fang start dating. I also forgot that in the book when they are at a day and night school Fang and Max go out for a while and well they end up getting lip locked with each other go back to their dorm and battle these human robot like things and they all live to go on another day without fear.(less)

Although this book is already the fifth installment of the Maximum Ride series (I thought it was the first!) James Patterson, the author, feeds you bits of information throughout the book in case you are me and read the fifth by accident~ Anyways, this book is about a group of genetically modified kids who had bird's genes added into their own while they were embryos in a laboratory. I think they were made to be the ultimate survival species because they have mutations that enable them to survive like super strength, amazing eyesight, the ability to read minds, etc. In this book, the group journeys to Hawaii using submarines uncovering mysterious barrels of *(something- I can't say!) which is very harmful towards the ocean ecosystems and everyone else as well. Here's the deal in short, the group as well as U.S navy are trying to rescue the mother of the main character and leader of the mutant group, Max. The kidnapper's name is Mr. Chu, who wanted to use Max and her crew for their fighting capabilities and their special traits they each have. Max refused (taking orders from people is not her thing) the offer therefore her mother was used as bait. I think I gave away a little too much so I'll stop here with the recap of the summary.
I enjoyed the romance in the book as well between Max and Fang which is a whole other story. It made the book more interesting for me because I personally do like romance but that's just my opinion. Read the book if you like humor because it was hilarious as well! Mr. Patterson gave me an in-depth perspective of a girl with a bit of attitude and spunk which helped me relate and understand the character more. (less)

It's not like I expected much from this; the only reason I read it was because it was just sitting there at the library, and I had a couple of hours to kill.

The flock really isn't doing anything anymore, and they've really devolved from fairly badass characters into mushy, cliched, idiotic teenagers. Come on, Patterson! If I can have some sort of coherent thought process, can't MAX!?
