A Brief History of Life in Victorian Britain

The Victorian era has dominated the popular imagination like no other period, but the familiarity with later 19th-century stories and history tends to give us a distorted view. Using character portraits and key events, Paterson brings the world of Victorian Britain alive, from the lifestyles of the aristocrats to the depths of the London slums.

I really enjoyed this book, there is a lot of information in a very small book & gives one a working knowledge of Victorian Britain. I especially like the "fashion" & "what they ate" chapters. The author really covered pretty much all aspects of life from how they got around to the military & what they read, religion & etiquette, office life & leisure. A very good overview of this time period

For a book which claims to be concerned with "social history" I found that an awful lot of the content was focused on the monarchy and elites in society. However, I only read this book to refresh my memory on the wider aspects of Victorian Britain and in this was achieved. Far from ground breaking in it's content but certainly worth a leaf through as an introduction to wider issues of the period.

Everybody ought to read this book! Very accessible and enjoyable, it highlights the fact that for better or worse, Victorian Britain was the genesis of the entire modern world. If you have used mechanized transportation, a flushable toilet, eaten fast food, accepted your place of work being separate from your home as a matter of course, thought your home a private refuge, etc. (I could go on for a while here)than this is YOUR cultural history.
