Willemsen, Roger, Afghanische Reise (2006)

Willemsen, German journalist of German TV fame and professor for literature at Bochum, travels through Afghanistan with Nadia Karim, an Afghan woman who returns after growing up in Germany. Nadia originally comes from the northern city of Kunduz and their trip to the north is the one structuring element of this travel report which is largely a collection of anecdotes, interspersed with relevant facts about Afghanistan.
This is by and large superb writing,

Excellent book on Afghanistan and its peoples and cultures. Favorite quote:

“To cultivate atmosphere you don’t ask for or request anything, you don’t get straight to the point, you encircle it, you adorn it, you unroll a carpet, take a few nuts and some dried fruit, convey a feeling of ease and a willingness to spend a lifetime in the presence of those around you.
Perhaps you let your point be half-glimpsed. You wait with any request until just before you leave. Goal-oriented, result-driven Weste

It started slowly and bittily, but grew on me more and more. Beautiful, clear language. heatbreaking stories of war and hardship, but also humour in the description of the film showing for women. Roger Willemsen shows that there is not just black and white. Ex-Taliban turn out to also have interest in culture and can surprise with moments of kindness. Afghanistan is a country I would love to see with its people who are hospitable and give, even when they have almost nothing.
