In Boston, a young woman finds herself pregnant--even though she is still a virgin.

In Ireland, another young woman discovers she is in the same impossible condition.

And in cities all around the world, medical authorities are overwhelmed by epidemics, droughts, famines, floods, and worse. It all feels like a sign that something awful is coming.

A few years ago (like 1980), Patterson dove into the area of religious action and suspense with this novel, which is really the story of the three women. The main narrative character is Anne Fitzgerald, a former nun turned private investigator, who has been hired by the Catholic Church to look into the mysterious case of a virgin from Newport, Rhode Island who is very pregnant. Kathleen Beavier is a young teen from a very wealthy family. She was attacked months earlier, but has no memory of the...more

Well, there isn't too much to say about this story other than it was a great read! The pace was perfect and the plot was masterful! This story will move to the top of my list. The way Mr. Patterson writes is unique and his use of shorter chapters is sheer brilliance. This story was a new plot line, when it came out, for the author. I was apprehensive, at first, but have since breathed a sigh of relief for taking the plunge! As with all of his stories, you can easily see the time and effort the a...more

I wanted to read something quick paced and got a copy of this book. I have already read a few Patterson's, specially the four women from Murder Mystery Club and some Alex Cross too. But I wanted a stand alone. The thing is, this doesn't really feel as a stand alone because the conclusion is so surprising you want to know what happens next.
I know Patterson's style, so no surprise here. Though this feels like an early version of Patterson's real style. In this one, he overuses brand names to esta...more

This book just about blew my mind. It kept me on my toes and kept me going. I couldn’t put it down because I just had to know the truth. Granted, there were times when I felt that it contained blasphemy but I just reminded myself that it’s fiction and that no one really knows the truth. Authors just let their minds wander free and ultimately, it’s up to the reader whether to believe in it or not. But again, this book is FICTION.

This isn’t the first book of Pa...more

This book.. is so much more than a book to me. This book is a beautiful, yet bittersweet memory for me. I remember reading this book when I was about 12-years-old. I had spent the weekend with Nana (my mom's mother). She had taken me to the library that Friday to get me a stack of Sweet Valley High books. I had read through them, and wanted to read something else. Nana grabbed the book she had finished, she had just gotten it. And it was Cradle and All. She figured that I might enjoy it. I began...more

James Patterson does a passable action story, and I can see that his books would translate well to film. On the other side, characterization is almost non-existent. The action in this book involves events surrounding the "virgin" pregnancies of two teenaged girls, closely scrutinized by the Catholic Church. The protagonist is a former Catholic nun, turned private detective, and hired by the church to watch over one of the girls. Presumably, one girl will give birth to the Saviour, and the other...more

Ok, so my opinion of this book might be totally bias because this book is honestly the first book I ever remember reading that wasn't a "school assignment" or those Goosebumps books in middle school. (go R.L. Stine!)

So it was my first "adult" choice book. And I'm SO glad it was, because it did the job. I don't know if I'd be as taken with reading if I didn't like this book.

Thankfully that wasn't the case.

Have I read things I've loved more since this book? Of course. But you're always gonna have...more

It's been a long time since I read a book in which I stayed up late---even on work nights----to read. It was that intriguing, that good. Once I started, I kept finding myself running back for just one more session. One more chapter.

For a reader such as me who loves all things priestly, adores behind-the-scenes of the Catholic Church, this novel was right up my alley.

And, yes. It IS fiction, and one must tread into this story with that in mind and just let loose the imagination. The priest/forme...more

Hardcover Edition:

This was the very first James Patterson book for me and I read it years ago. I had all but forgotten about this book but I do remember vividly reading it and enjoying the story.

Compared to the stand alone books that I have just started reading now (Guilty Wives, Kill Me If You Can, Sail) you can tell this is an early career writing for Patterson. The style and writing voice is there, it's just in its infancy stages.

I like this genre alot and he must have, too, because I just...more

I know it's been a while since my last post. I have been busy with admission process in post-graduation. Phew !!! Finally got into one. Yea !!! Anyways I have been itching to write about this one. I have read so many of James Patterson novels but this one caught me by surprise.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF VIRGIN BIRTHS ???

Well, obviously Mother Mary gave birth to Jesus as a virgin. Well believe it or not this story is based in on this. The earth it seems is taken on by Devils or Satan. There are fami...more

Boy, does James Patterson write short chapters. That was my first thought, this from someone who writes short chapters herself, but not quite that brief. This style of writing moves the story along rapidly and doesn't require the author to put in transitions in between scenes or even mid-scene. But it doesn't create suspense. The plot itself is suspenseful -- for about a third of the way in. Then we know what the mystery is about. Still, the main story is engaging enough to keep one reading to f...more

This is the first non-Alex Cross book of Patterson's that I've read. While the story is good, the writing is poor -- not up to the standard I'd expect from Patterson. I suspect this is an early novel that Patterson dusted off and marketed after he got hot.
The secret of the miraculous revelations of the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Fatima in 1918 is that two virgins will conceive. One will bear the Son of God, the other will bear the Son of Satan. The premise of the book is that two teenag...more

My first reaction to this book was "there had better be a sequel." It was so fast-paced that you felt like you couldn't put it down for even one second. It was almost too religious for a book, however. You really had to know about the Roman Catholic Church, which I'm Catholic so I do, to fully understand it and I feel like that would turn a lot of people away from the book. Back to the sequel comment, the ending was mind-blowing. I had to read it several times to fully understand it. It definite...more

Mereka mempercaya...more

Two pregnant teens, both virgins. Epidemics, droughts, famines, floods, etc threaten the world. A former nun turned P.I. investigating the immaculate conceptions. I think it's safe to say that it is clear where this story is going. And unfortunately, Patterson takes a long time to confirm the reader's suspicions. But that is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.

A good chunk of the book revolves around the two virgins and the investigation to determine which of the two will give...more

This is the first James Patterson book I've read, and I was a little disappointed. I do understand that this was a reworking of one of his very early books, perhaps that's the problem.

Although I enjoyed the writing, generally, I found myself wondering what the point of the book was. It might have worked as a prequel or sequel. But, standing alone, it was definitely lacking.

I didn't find myself involved enough with the main characters, and thought they were a little two-dimensional.

I do, however...more

A thriller involving the second coming of Christ! That just makes me smile.

The book is what I consider literary candy; fun to read but probably not something I will be discussing over a glass of wine at a book club. A beer or wine cooler would be more appropriate.

I haven't read many of Patterson's novels but he seems like a good storyteller. I'll look up more of his novels. I loved Against Medical Advice: One Family's Struggle with an Agonizing Medical Mystery. It is a sensitive handling of OCD...more

I am a religious person, but this book was a little too out there for me. It all centers around two teenagers, one in Rhode Island and one in Ireland, who become pregnant. The kicker is that they are both virgins. So in comes the Catholic Church to investigate and determine (1)if they are truly virgins and (2) which carries the Savior and which carries the beast. A subplot to the story was famine, drought, and new cases of polio occurring throughout the world. It is alluded that these are relate...more

Intriguing mystery of two young teenagers in different parts of the world who are pregnant, but claim they did not have intercourse. The Church is very interested in their background, and, of course, of the impending births. Enter investigators from the Church and a private investigator who just happens to have been a nun. Will one of the teenagers give birth to Satan? Will the other give birth to the Messiah? Are the epidemics, wars, hunger in the world related to these births? Is the ending a...more

Supposedly Patterson rewrote this after it had been sitting around for years. Chances are, one of his many ghost writers tackled it. I don't care - I still love Patterson's popcorn mysteries, and was quite surprised to see he had ever taken a stab at horror.

A pretty standard plot involving two virgin births, one in Boston and one in Ireland shakes up the Catholic Church, and (of course) a nun-turned-PI has to investigate. I did keep wondering where they tale was going, what exactly was being lai...more

I love Patterson's other works but this one had me baffled. I usually only read the ones by himself now, without the help of other authors, I like the Alex Cross character. The characters and plot development were exquisite but I couldn't bite on the way it was laid out.

If you like authors who delve into religious aspects then this book is for you. I didn't really by the story but found myself engrossed in the character development. A book has to convince me that it could actually have happene...more

I finally got around to reading my FIRST James Patterson book.( I know, like where have been-under a rock? ) and I wasn't disappointed! Just finished Cradle and All at breakneck speed! A supernatural thriller that pits good against evil set against the backdrop of present day life and the powerful influences of the Vatican. The epilogue tantalizes the reader with the beginnings of another book where this one left off.I'll have to see if there is a sequel. I love the fast- paced plot- a great page...more

Typical James Patterson writing--- good plot, some surprises, a plethora of interesting characters. However, I prefer when Patterson sticks to crime thrillers; I was not expecting a religious thriller. I prefer when he uses facts and events to lead a reader through his plot than simple religious fervor. There were a few somewhat unexplained details that rather left me sratching my head as well--- probably because the reader was meant to simply take everything "on faith". Because of that I'm only...more

Hm, interesting. Immaculate conceptions in Newport, RI and Ireland have the Catholic church wondering if a prophecy of old is coming true. Along with these conceptions have come plagues around the world including areas of draught, famine, polio outbreaks, and others. Something of import is occuring. A retired nun turned private investigator is hired by the church to investigate whether claims of the virgin births are true or a hoax. Faith versus fact is debated and one has has to ask themselves,...more

This book bascally sucked. It was predictable and the VERY POORLY WRITTEN. James Patterson bascally left ALOT of things that could help you understand the book much better. At times It was hard to put down and thats the only reason I am giving it 1.5 stars. I really do like this author but If I read another by him thats is not up to par what he is written before and I loved like the womens Murder Club Seris I WILL GIVE UP ON HIM AND just read the womens club series. He can write so much better t...more
